wow ...notice how the on cam narration sounded hokey with room tone ...then off cam narration became 'just the ticket' ... what a great story !!! ...and GREAT presentation !!!
An account of my encounter with a friendly sperm whale in the waters off Dominica is posted on the BlueVoice website. The full story of Mr. Ishii's conversion from dolphin hunter to dolphin watcher is told in my book The Voice of the Dolphins by Hardy Jones, available at Amazon in print and Kindle formats.
well it might seem easy to condemn an entire country or race for something a few shit for brains do but NO COUNTRY is innocent!..we here in the states are just as guilty of severe animal torment and abuse..just not with certaceans as much except for marine parks. this izumi made a change for the better and will hopefully start a movement so whats done is done and the guy should be supported for it!!.
@tasteegold7772 Couldn't have said it better... I'm with you! People in his area and tourists need to get out there and patronize his dolphin watching/whale watching business. I hope he is still in this business.
This is a great video. I am so relieved when the group finally sees a whale. It put a smile on my face, knowing that there japanese people interested in whale and dolphin conservation. I hope that his business does well!
Thank You for this wonderful video and story. Ishii san is a courageous man who has followed his heart and in so doing, stepped our of the cultural norm to try help save the dolphins & the whales through his tours and education.
Dear Hardy, I have a bad feeling you might be naive about the intent of Japan. Japan has made a mockery of the IWC, by bribing poor countries, even offering prostitutes to their delegates. Mitsubishi has been accused of stockpiling Blue fin Tuna to profit even more by their extinction. Time and time again the Japanese has gotten to extreme lengths to limit international laws against overfishing. Environmentalists all over the world have come to despise Japan for their actions. -Genshu
The Japs who eat, kill, hunt sell and harpoon them can all go to hell! But at least one went to try and help these animals and that can make a difference. In part of japan dolphins were hunted so much that they are now extinct in that area of japan and if this dosent stop it wont just be japan that lost these endangered whales and dolphins but the world. I wouldnt be surpirsed if this guy goes back to killing them. Lets hope he stays this way forever and all of the asses stop the mass killings.
@toy239 - yes but the people who do these screwed up things why dont they see what there doing is fucked up!
Come on seriously if these animals go extinct becasue of them then what are the people gonna eat dirt because they kill everything in the goddamn ocean they need to stop fucking up the sensitive ecosystem. I hope they burn in the depths of hell. They are just heartless bastards! I want to do the same thing they did and still do to these poor enedangered aniamls! Fuckers. .
@ALoveForOrcas Settle the fuck down man. Hindus think the same thing about anyone who eats cattle but does that make us bad people and we deserve to go to hell? I respect whales as much as the next guy, but there is a limit to what you should say. You treat them as if deep down they're murderers. To tell you the truth, we Americans are worse with what we do to animals. Pigs spend most of their life immobile in small cages standing in their own feces before being practically torchered to death.
@BIubbit01 the only reason i keep bitching about this is because they are ENDANGERED , UNLIKE cows, pigs and chickens ect. It would be nice if they gov would do something about it. Some of them are deep down murders. And hell! i would love to take a bat to american heads if they treat animals cruely. I am NOT A PEOPLE PERSON, I HATE PEOPLE, SO I COULD CARE LESS IF PPL DIE. (as long as its not family or friends which my great grandfather just passed away (love u) Im ONLY an animal person.
@ALoveForOrcas *Nods* Mhm mhm yup I understand. I agree with you on animal cruelty, less on the people thing because that you said you could caree less if people died, it just made you sound like an ignorant especially when you brought up family.
@BIubbit01 - yeah whatever , i got MY point across so im done bitching on this vid but ppl obviously can change if they have souls like this guy who decided to change. If only the other souless japs (not all are murders and eat them) the people who do if they stop what there doing then im fine with japan.
I have tears in my eyes when I see the face of the japanese skipper. This is the right way!!! I did meet such a sperm whale 4 weeks ago on Pico Island. I can imagen how they felt watching this beauty, honored, incredible happy.
What will fate have for the future of whales? Will they be proof of intelligence and high awareness of life? Or will they become a painful memory of man's persuit of making paper and coins greater?
I'm a fan of Japan but the way some of them treat the oceans (and we're no saints either) disgusts me. It will end soon, one way or another.
A small group of Yakuza-financed "fishermen"... but yes, most Japanese have nothing to do with whaling, in fact I have many Japanese friends and NONE of them remembers ever having tasted whale and they think the gov'ts defense of the whaling lobby is pointless. And whale meat is ridiculously expensive, something like US $160 a kilo.
I'd say more of a curios Whale, but I always think Whales and Dolphins are very interesting creatures. I get the feeling they consider us their own on some accounts.
I watched & loved Hardy Jones' documentary about this (not the upsetting parts obviously), he must put himself in a lot of danger with the fishermen, but his work and the help of Izumi Ishi can really hopefully turn things round in Japan.
I really would love to do work similar to Hardy Jones.
I know that only few people eat dolphin and whale´s meat, but a lot of Japan´s poblation are not aware of what is going on, to have few people eating whales is not good enough, it has to stop! completely
Whale watching conducted properly does not harm whales. The fact that the whales swim to our boats demonstrates that. Some operations do harass whales and we condemn that. Whale watching is also an incentive for fishermen in Japan to stop hunting whales and dolphins and go into the eco-tourism business. Hardy
It is not a country or the Japanese who kill whales and dolphins in this cruel manner. It is a small group of fishermen - 37 in total. We work with Japanese people to try to end this barbarity. I have spent my life working with whales and dolphins so it is appropriate that I try to aid them. Hardy Jones
@BlueVoiceOrg if it is 'not japan' or the japanese doing this- why is a group of 37 people allowed to slaughter wild animals in a way that offends basically every humane person in the world ? If it is only 37 people, where is the demand for their catch coming from? Don't falsely defend the japanese- they have acted with barbarity basically as long as westerners have observed them. And not ordinary barbarity- but truly obscene callousness and cruelty. Fuck them. No, nuke them again.
Actually, Oddballer, Greenpeace makes sure to tell everyone that very few of the Japanese population eat whale, so there are some of us out there that do know that it's a very small percentage of the Japanese population that are whale hungry.. That's obvious, with over 4,000 tons of whalemeat in storage.. no one's buying it, much less eating it!!
and if it is so few eating whale and dolphin meat, why on earth do those few fishermen still go out and shed so much innocent blood?!?!? Ain't it even to the least idiot a clear fact, that this has to end?
Because it's the big businessmen who have their hands in the business, and therefore have enough control of the govt to say they want it to continue, so it does.. Just like everywhere else in the world, money does the talkin'..unfortunately...
Phew, when the text popped up at the end I thought it was going to say something like, "In a tragic and ironic twist of fate, Izumi Ishii was eaten alive by dolphins the following week." You know they'd have loved a punchy ending like that.
A truly inspiring video showing how humans can evolve. I hope it will show others that protecting our natural world and its animal inhabitants can be rewarding and profitable. Wouldn't it be great if instead of fishing boats leaving the harbor at Taiji to kill dolphins, those boats were filled with dolphin watchers.
I commented on this video yesterday and don't see my comment posted. It is so inspiring to see people have a change of mind and heart like Izumi Ishii did and to have the moment of launching of something that can help bring about a shift in awareness captured by Hardy who has donated so much of his time and energy to getting dolphins, whales and the ocean itself duly appreciated all over the world. Accolades.
We do not use terms such as Japs and we do not hold the Japanese people responsible for the hunting of dolphins - only s small group of fishermen do it. Hardy

I'm anti-whaling Japanese.
But do you know how many Japanese eating whale meat today there are ?
Very very few.
Do you really know the true fact ?
You have only heard the opinion of anti-whaling people until now , haven't you ?
In this place , almost all people maintain that Japanese are cruel people by expressing the fact as an villainous matter .
You should state your thought after comprehending both opinions .

I think it is dangerous to swallow this video whole.
If you do , you may have hatred towards all the Japanese.
And it is good that you go to Japan and try to realize the matter of whaling there.
Hatred toward one country only engenders a struggle which injures innocent people .

Criticizing the whole Japan and regarding all Japanese
as villians make the matter worse.
Actually someone kills whales in a few area in Japan.
But many people who live in Japan have never seen whale meat in their life.
Excessive anti-whaling publicity makes me indignant.
