can you make characters at least have expressions like smiles for anima8or (no lip-sync) or does that cost extra as well?

in anim8or you can use morph targets ( same thing in most programs ) you model a head not smiling, then modify it to make it smiling, then you make the smiling head become a "morph target" of the non-smiling head --- and from then you can animate the head to go from non-smiling to smiling smoothly - to make a head talk you'd have to build morph-target heads with mouths for each mouth shape used during talking, and animate this
