they werent technically his men, chinggis khan never willingly killed his men. Those horsemen were either captives or conscriptions from a rival tribe sent on a suicide mission. If they retreat we kill them, if they advance they either win or soften the resistance for us.

If you watch the movie - right before the scene - he declares a set of laws amongst which is "no running away" and "no betrayal" - punishable by death. So they get killed for running away. That's how I saw it.

dont get ideas form this movie, this movie is like 300 with more action and less historical accuracy. Chinggis khan never killed his own men, not for running away. Our tactics were based on running away and shooting arrows on the horse at the same time and we would make the enemy feel like they are winning and chase us only to be ambushed by us.
