You know what's absolutely stupid though? Parents complained about Lord Zedd being too evil for kids or teenagers. Yet now they let teenagers and even young kids watch garbage like Jersey Shore. God... society's degenerated. I'd rather see an amazingly evil villain than see a bunch of teens/young adults act trashy and preppy.

Yes, he did technically ACCOMPLISH more when he married Rita, but he lost his personality and became comic relief.

The sole purpose of Saban changing him around was to get parents to stop complaining. The only reason he and Rita accomplished more was so they could give the Rangers new suits when Saban used up all its stock footage.

The beauty of Zedd was that he crushed Rita beneath his heel, metaphorically speaking, in Season 2's beginning. He started out kicking the rangers' asses, he utterly decimated the Green Ranger permanently. He was the force that Zordon and the Rangers hoped they would never have to face. Making parents cringe at such a dark villain was genius.

Hell, in Zyuranger, Bandora was darker than her American counterpart, Rita.

After marrying Rita, Zedd became a comedic buffoon. Neutered.

They did complain. Which is why he was forced to be dumbed down about halfway through Season 2, and then was reduced to almost a shadow of his former self in Season 3. They didn't understand that we were more than ready back then for villains to be portrayed that way. I mean, come on! Cruella deVille was that evil; but parents hypocritically ignored that...because Disney can do whatever it wants! Saban, however, didn't have that kind of parental clout.

However, parents assume that the sophistication this would have implied for the show is something children "can never grasp."

In other words, the adults themselves don't have the patience to figure it out, so how can their kids possibly get it?

His plans became less "serious" and more comedic. Think toward the beginning of season 2, Zedd was a megalomaniacal badass. He took no crap, was so frightening and nightmarish that parents complained he was "too evil", and even brought down the Green Ranger. He was a beast.

In season 3, Zedd was a henpecked wuss. All he did was joke and dance. Zedd got neutered. He wasn't even a villain, he was just an evil comedian.

Zedd was awesome early Season 2.

@DozerfleetProd Heh, yeah. Disney had some of the most evil characters ever made. But I guess I -can- understand the characters. I mean; here's a kid's show with good vs Evil. Ok, always educational. But here comes the creepiest guy since skeletor; Zedd. A guy who looks like he's been flayed and had a silverish skeleton smelted on his bare skin. Creeped me the fuck out too when I was little (but then again, I was also thinking "FINALLY! an EVIL character instead of this idiot witch".

Cruella deVille just wanted to skin puppies to make a coat. Lord Zedd was a skinless emperor out to rule the universe and destroy all forces of good. Sure as a kid, Cruella automatically comes off as a villain but Zedd... I think he was the coolest thing back in MMPR season 2 and 3 and he still scared the hell out of me.
