Yes, I think the Art of Violin extract was another occasion, but these performances really show how under-estimated Ferras is in the current scheme of things. Unashamedly romantic and a bit fruity, but what a fabulous core sound he has.
I first heard about Ferras in the 1970s when I bought the cassette with the Beethoven Concerto conducted by Karajan and the Berlin Phil. For my taste this is the best recording of this concerto I ever heard, and when the tape got rotten I was lucky enough to find another one which I still keep to this day. Thanks to youtube I have been able to listen to Ferras again, in this outstanding performance of the Mendelssohn concerto, part of it can be found in the DVD "The Art of Violin".
Nice comment, but you're not right, the part where Ferras plays in the film is another one. If you compare them to each other you will see differences - camera, sound and playing, I think even bowing and fingerings are different. Don't know where they shot the part for "The Art of Violin", even if it is the same year, the recordings are not the same.
Great music, but unless its just me the sound is out of sync with the video. It's actually kind of interesting to watch like this. Like a conductor staying ahead of the orchestra, you can see the motions first then hear the music made by them.
I am sorry for that. But these youtubers have forbidden to upload mor than 10 min. And so cutting the video led to this technical problem. If you want to have the whole video contact me.

You are right . The performances are not the same. This reminds me that I should watch The Art of Violin again after a long time on my shelf.
Cheers.

Look at how his facial expression changes around 2:48! Pure sweetness. He seems to be remembering a dear memory.
