question for you @LittlePatrician.. i was wondering if i could use your interpretation of Alice in Wonderland this year as my HI? if not i totally understand. you did an amazing job.
@KaDanceRelic I would rather you didn't. I spent a lot of time crafting the piece and making it my own, so I would prefer that it wasn't used by others. It is something that I put a lot myself into, and I believe competitors should start from scratch in their pieces so that they can really claim them as their own. I appreciate you asking, though. Take care. :)
@LittlePatrician Alright thanks. As soon as I asked you if I could use it I thought crap because I wouldn't want anyone to use mine either lol. It was very well done though.
@immnony Yup, character snaps are a big part of humorous interpretation in high school speech; it's completely different than middle school because your body is much more involved and distinct characterization is more important.
@LittlePatrician You are wonderful at this speech! It's a joy to watch! I am also a speecher! I'm in 9th grade. I'm not sure which category to be in this year... I think that Humor could be very fun! I was wondering if you could tell me the author of this speech...? If you could, that would be amazing!
i just wanted some help i wuz already spending day and night trying to find the right piece but too late now hoe hoe hoe merry christmas @kkawesome u didnt help shit. i wasnt asking advise for how to fucking find a piece
@SAtubeproductions Again, dear, you asked a complete stranger to drop everything she was doing to find you the "funniest piece ever" six days before your competition and became irrationally irate when this unreasonable request was not fulfilled. I have no obligation to do your work for you, and @kkawesome had no responsibility to help you; s/he was thoughtful enough to offer useful suggestions, which you should have taken. That is your own fault. You need to work on your attitude, little one.
@Skizels Thanks! My suggestion would be to poke around on sites like playscripts(dot)com where you can browse humorous plays. Otherwise, I would talk to your coaches; my head coach in high school had an extensive collection that she was happy to share with me.
@LittlePatrician hi I'm in 7th grade and I'm doing forensics at my school. I need help with finding a piece as I'm doing humorous interpretation. I want it to be the most funniest piece ever and it has to be between 4:30-10:30 minutes. (keep in mind that when performing we can't move from waist down) I hav 6 more days til performance (memorization won't b a problem) so plz help! Btw luved ur vid!
@SAtubeproductions Omg! I'm in forensics in the 7th grade! And we cant move from the waist down plus my performance is in 6 days too! You should have gotten your piece way earlier! But does your teacher have and pieces? Ask her where to get them. I hope I helped : )
@SAtubeproductions Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you, but college is quite a bit more difficult than 7th grade and has kept me busier than you can imagine. Like @kkawesome716 said, you should have prepared your piece much earlier than six days before the performance; you can't simply procrastinate and expect a stranger on the internet to do the work for you. Your teachers/coaches are much better resources than I am because they know you and can find the pieces that suit you best.
I really love your interpretation piece and think what you did with the characters was indeed very clever. I'm trying to make my HI piece as perfect as possible but I'm a newbie. Since you are obviously experienced, what would you recommend for a newcomer?
@rapluvr1 Thanks, I really appreciate it! Hmm...I think a big piece of advice would be to go with what you are good at and develop those skills. I had a humorous interpretation before Alice in Wonderland that I ditched because I couldn't get some of the accents right. And, wouldn't you know it, I ended up with a much better script (this one) that played to my skill set. It still definitely pushed me, but it was still something I was capable of. I suggest having a meeting with your coach. :)
@smartndumb101 Haha, I actually get this question a lot! It is definitely a process. I remember feeling very awkward my first time doing HI and Storytelling because it was something entirely new and outside my realm of comfort--but it gets better! You just need to keep practicing, coaching with your coaches, and focusing on enjoying yourself rather than on competition. Hope I helped; let me know if you ever do speech in the future or if you need any other pieces of advice. :)
@xjoe1988x Haha, no; this was something I competed with on the speech team when I was a Sophomore in high school (four years ago). I suppose I could technically say I get paid for it, though, because it earned me a scholarship for the college I attend. :P
so i watched this last year at the beginning of my first speech season, your piece was part of my inspiration to try out an HI.... i ended up getting 8th place in finals in my first two tournaments! So i guess thank you for posting this and in a way encouraging me to try out an HI! GREAT JOB on this piece by the way!!!
Oh my gosh!!! I'm not the only person who put a twist on Alice in Wonderland!!! My creative piece this year was about how technology kills the old traditions of outdoor games and fairytales, and my Alice character was creepy, dark, and homicidal.
@LSHCreativeStudios That's so funny! There was a period where I was considering completely reworking my entire piece to make Alice creepy and homicidal. Great minds think alike, eh? ;)

@TheMarsht Thanks, I appreciate that! Congratulations to you as well; I watched your duo on your channel and loved it! Sorry it took so long for me to respond, but did you compete at nationals in 2010? I ask because I remember a teammate of mine gushing about an awesome Beauty and the Beast duo, and I think it may have been yours. I was so disappointed at the time that I wasn't able to see it, so it was exciting when I saw it was posted on your channel.
Your interpretation was so amazing! I loved how you put a whole new twist on Alice! I have to do one for my final exam. could you give me a few pointers as to what exactly goes into an oral interpretation?
@RafikiGurl123 Thank you for commenting; I'm so glad to hear you like it! I would be happy to give you some pointers; I will send you a personal message. :)
i love this i was wondering were you found the pice because i am doing forensics for my 3rd time and wanted to do this piece was un sure of were u find it so please plase tell me and u are so funny and great at it !!!!!!
@plader1 Haha, thanks! I've actually gotten a fair amount of comments involving awe at performing that piece in heels, but, in reality, they are not nearly as bad as they look in the video. The pant legs cover them up and make the heels look very high, but the heels are really only...maybe around 1.5 inches high. They are really quite comfortable and were very helpful in executing the snaps! :)
@bhinderbinder Haha, thanks! That's pretty much what I was going for; I remember loving those first few seconds where people were completely confused. :D
This is very good! I have been on my speech & debate team for a year now, I'm going to be a sophomore, and I'm looking for a piece for next year. So it's okay to change the story a little bit like you changed Alice's character?
Wow, great performances..... I`m new in Humorous Interpretation. I would like to ask you a favor regarding how to find idea about HI. Do you know any website to provide me with HI? I really need it for my coming HI in my school. I`ll be waiting for your answer.
@shansh6 Thanks! I'm sorry this comment is so late; I've been very busy with college. However, if you still require assistance, I would be happy to help. Otherwise, I would talk to your coaches; my head coach in high school had an extensive collection of plays that she was happy to share with me.
i like how when you stomp, sometimes the camera moves to make it look like you're shaking the building. whether the camera person intended that or not, i like it.
Kari, I think your clothes choice was not the best you could have. Specially the shirt that came untucked makes you look untidy in front of people watching you. Next time get a longer shirt, or keep it untucked if you have to wear shirt. That one was too small and short for your body. I bet that with any movement you made with this shirt, or when sitting down it came untucked.
Agreed! The suit as a whole was awkward on me. The shirt was definitely not long enough, and the pants were not high enough to keep it tucked in. However, having ones shirt untucked is an outrageous idea in the Speech Team, so I just had to roll with it. Every time I wore that suit, though, I thought, "This is absolutely the LAST time!"
Rest assured, I have an entirely new suit (and shirt) now, and I look fabulous. ;)
No, original content is not permitted in HI. While this appears to be original, it is actually clever (how modest I am! :P) manipulation of the script. NFL rules are pretty relaxed, and I used this to my advantage. I used the original Alice in Wonderland book, and every single word I use can be found in the script--one of the few rules for NFL. So while there is no script that exactly resembles mine, I was still well within NFL rules.
Hey, i loved that alice in wonderland piece and i was wondering where you got that piece cause i am in forensics as well and need a good piece to do. would you help me out please?
I did interps for 4 years, captain for 2 and was a national competitor. Nice work, very diverse characters. I like how you did alice. Hope you go far!
Geez you're in my district! And we're coming up there to St. Cloud Tech for our last invitational! If you're still doing HI, FINAL FINAL FINAL so I can come watch!
Sorry, I'm in Original Oratory this year. However, you may still find it sufficiently humorous. ;) I just returned from Nat Quals today and took second place with it--hooray! I will probably upload the [very low quality] video sometime soon--otherwise you are still welcome to watch me! Feel free to introduce yourself at Tech; it would be neat to meet you. Just look for the nerd in maroon glasses. :P
@hpfangirl721 Thanks! I have a lot of respect for DI-ers; that is something I CANNOT do for the life of me. It's difficult for me to be convincing because I have difficulty connecting emotionally to those sorts of characters (I'm a pretty unemotional person despite what this speech would suggest).
omfg, this was great. at first i was like "um okay what does this have anything to do with Alice In Wonderland" after the intro i was like oh okay . but yeah nice job
Haha, they really aren't bad. The heel isn't very high compared to some of the heels I've seen other females wear in competition. Mine are very sensible compared to their stilettos. :P
Thanks! I have a great deal of respect for people in debate and extemporaneous speaking. I consider the ability to think on your feet to be very impressive.
haha that was great!!but i really didnt notice you loosing your voice until the very last line though. but i cannot imagine having to do that voice for almost 10 minutes! talk about throat damage!
Haha, this is true. I must have built up some sort of tolerance for it because I never recall having any trouble. I used it recently for a college forensics scholarship, however, after not performing it for over a year. I just about lost my voice during the very first time practicing it again--but it won me the scholarship! Go Alice! :P
i love this. i am also in the speech competition. may i copy you? please? just the alice character idea...i like this. this is good. please? may i copy ur idea fer alice? XD email me back!
Cool! I maxed out my NFL points my Jr. year in high school. That was back in 1997 though. heh. It's good to see it alive and well. A couple of my friends who went to Nats. and won are now on Broadway. It's kinda cool.
Wow, that's really impressive! I took a break during my junior year, but I still have a substantial amount of NFL points accumulated. I am currently in my senior year, and I'm ready to give Nationals what-for.
unfortantly i didnt see yours because my catagorey is poetry and that is not NFL. well actully non of my temates were in NFL if you were at the award ceremony you probably saw my school leave right as they wer to announce the winners of NFL. sorry again i didn't see yours but maybe see you at state:)
nope, not cheating. It's just interpretation, she probably just was interpretating this person's piece. :doing that makes you look bad though, and probably for the judge too
no it is not cheating if someone has you same peice. ( some one also had my Poetry piece) however if she is copying her movements voice ect.. it is cheating. you should say something because if that person gets placed or wins something it is not rightfuly theirs
If she is doing my exact piece, it is definitely cheating. I made my cutting from the original Alice in Wonderland, so there is no script out there that is remotely like mine. In other words, there is no way she could have done that piece without getting the idea from me. How shameful.
It was her interpretation of Alice - and if she changed her voice for Alice part way through the piece, she wouldn't be staying in character. I love this :-)
am i the only person that thinks its trashy to ask people for their cuttings? if you like a piece THAT much, find the script and cut it yourself! seriously...this is fucking alice in wonderland...not exactly a hard script to find. as for the performance...this MUST be ncfca bc it was absoultely aweful...no pops, terrible characterization...nothing you did made sense. FAIL.
The piece actually did very well during the season. It championed frequently and never placed below third. The thing about this piece is that it is designed to look a little messy. I might think I did terrible in a certain round because I thought I had made an error, but then I end up getting a 1-100. It was usually difficult for me to tell if I did well in a round or not. It was really all based on the perspective of the judges. Typically speaking, however, it did well.
how much can you change from a script or story that's well known like Alice in wonderland? i've seen so many people who've done awesome interpretrations like you have, but i don't know if i could do the same.
what do you do first to start cutting your own humon interp piece?
You are technically only supposed to add/ change a very mininmal amount of words - you can cut whatever your heart disires...to start cutting, find the climax and the points that support the climax and so on and so forth...good luck!! :)
As for interpretation and changing words, the rules vary from state to state. Some are more lenient than others. Because of this, Nationals is not very strict on this subject. As long as all of the words you say are somewhere in the script itself, you are typically good to go. However, you should check the rules that apply to your specific state.
I would love to do this for my speech team. Can you email me a copy of the script. Thanks....let me know via this site and then I will give you the address. You are awesome!!!
Your characterizations are phenomenal; I did Alice's Adventures with Poorly Cooked Cafeteria Seafood this past year and my Cheshire Cat was remarkably similar to your Mad Hatter. I love the unorthodox Cookie Monster characterization for Alice.
One of my biggest competitors had that piece; we ended up being in many rounds together. It was interesting to see the different takes on a classic story.

Actually, I did not go to State. I championed at Sub-Sections, but the day of Sections I was rather ill. By the final round I had a terrible fever. Needless to say, it is difficult to perform such a physically demanding piece when the room is spinning. I performed poorly and placed sixth. I was still supposed to go to State with the other finalists on my team, but some smarty planned our prom that same day. Although I did wish to go, I decided I would have more fun at prom. I was correct.

I did interps for 4 years, captain for 2 and was a national competitor. Nice work, very diverse characters. I like how you did alice. Hope you go far!

Geez you're in my district! And we're coming up there to St. Cloud Tech for our last invitational! If you're still doing HI, FINAL FINAL FINAL so I can come watch!
vajboi97 2 years ago
Sorry, I'm in Original Oratory this year. However, you may still find it sufficiently humorous. ;) I just returned from Nat Quals today and took second place with it--hooray! I will probably upload the [very low quality] video sometime soon--otherwise you are still welcome to watch me! Feel free to introduce yourself at Tech; it would be neat to meet you. Just look for the nerd in maroon glasses. :P
LittlePatrician 1 year ago
Wow. This is fantastic.
I just recently joined forensics and will probably be competeing in either HI or Kid Lit.
Great job in turning a classic peice into something really really original :D

LittlePatrician 1 year ago
@hpfangirl721 Thanks! I have a lot of respect for DI-ers; that is something I CANNOT do for the life of me. It's difficult for me to be convincing because I have difficulty connecting emotionally to those sorts of characters (I'm a pretty unemotional person despite what this speech would suggest).

You're absolutely brilliant! I'm in humorous interpretation as well! Keep of the GREAT work.

haha that was great!!but i really didnt notice you loosing your voice until the very last line though. but i cannot imagine having to do that voice for almost 10 minutes! talk about throat damage!
abigailjamaica 2 years ago
Haha, this is true. I must have built up some sort of tolerance for it because I never recall having any trouble. I used it recently for a college forensics scholarship, however, after not performing it for over a year. I just about lost my voice during the very first time practicing it again--but it won me the scholarship! Go Alice! :P

what place did you get?
CapinTravin 2 years ago
Cool! I maxed out my NFL points my Jr. year in high school. That was back in 1997 though. heh. It's good to see it alive and well. A couple of my friends who went to Nats. and won are now on Broadway. It's kinda cool.
WarrenWestonEagle 2 years ago
Wow, that's really impressive! I took a break during my junior year, but I still have a substantial amount of NFL points accumulated. I am currently in my senior year, and I'm ready to give Nationals what-for.
LittlePatrician 2 years ago
Do you mind me asking what you placed with this piece?
I dont compete in humor, im a Duo Interp/Acting/Prose lover. :P
Nicely done.

unfortantly i didnt see yours because my catagorey is poetry and that is not NFL. well actully non of my temates were in NFL if you were at the award ceremony you probably saw my school leave right as they wer to announce the winners of NFL. sorry again i didn't see yours but maybe see you at state:)

i saw a girl at my 4n6 meet doing the exact same thing as this, isn't that cheating?! I didn't say anything but should i?
PomsrLife 3 years ago
nope, not cheating. It's just interpretation, she probably just was interpretating this person's piece. :doing that makes you look bad though, and probably for the judge too
invrcuss 3 years ago
no it is not cheating if someone has you same peice. ( some one also had my Poetry piece) however if she is copying her movements voice ect.. it is cheating. you should say something because if that person gets placed or wins something it is not rightfuly theirs
kidthatyoumightknow 2 years ago
It is a rip off when some copies how someone else does a piece.
but if they do it better. . .then they maybe deserve a bit more points than the other person?
WhoaHeisei5 2 years ago
If she is doing my exact piece, it is definitely cheating. I made my cutting from the original Alice in Wonderland, so there is no script out there that is remotely like mine. In other words, there is no way she could have done that piece without getting the idea from me. How shameful.
LittlePatrician 2 years ago
im doing alice in wonderland as my duo cut this year, maybe ill post it and you can take a look:)

LittlePatrician 2 years ago
JEEZE the whole time in that voice? It seems like a funny piece and all but wow, sorry but that's a little extreme, wouldn't you say?
Shmaxxie 3 years ago
It was her interpretation of Alice - and if she changed her voice for Alice part way through the piece, she wouldn't be staying in character. I love this :-)

LittlePatrician 2 years ago
am i the only person that thinks its trashy to ask people for their cuttings? if you like a piece THAT much, find the script and cut it yourself! seriously...this is fucking alice in wonderland...not exactly a hard script to find. as for the performance...this MUST be ncfca bc it was absoultely aweful...no pops, terrible characterization...nothing you did made sense. FAIL.
espsteve 3 years ago
so how did you do?
MediaHealth 3 years ago
The piece actually did very well during the season. It championed frequently and never placed below third. The thing about this piece is that it is designed to look a little messy. I might think I did terrible in a certain round because I thought I had made an error, but then I end up getting a 1-100. It was usually difficult for me to tell if I did well in a round or not. It was really all based on the perspective of the judges. Typically speaking, however, it did well.
LittlePatrician 2 years ago
it was good but i personally didn't find it funny i'm not really into the "oooos" and physical humor but its a personal thing

I would be wary of that type of piece, though. I've seen several crash and burn. Just tread lightly, and let me know how it goes. :)
LittlePatrician 2 years ago
I ended up not doing it, I went with some gay thing about the romans, I dont even remember. lol
Kevinofrepublic 2 years ago
Hey Kari great job with the vid! I finally watched it!!!
kidinthenight 3 years ago
how much can you change from a script or story that's well known like Alice in wonderland? i've seen so many people who've done awesome interpretrations like you have, but i don't know if i could do the same.
what do you do first to start cutting your own humon interp piece?
nesgurl90 3 years ago
You are technically only supposed to add/ change a very mininmal amount of words - you can cut whatever your heart disires...to start cutting, find the climax and the points that support the climax and so on and so forth...good luck!! :)
rcdaaaaancer 3 years ago
Yes, rcdaaaancer summed that up rather nicely.
As for interpretation and changing words, the rules vary from state to state. Some are more lenient than others. Because of this, Nationals is not very strict on this subject. As long as all of the words you say are somewhere in the script itself, you are typically good to go. However, you should check the rules that apply to your specific state.
LittlePatrician 2 years ago
Hey! I'd love a copy of your script! Please message me so I can give you my e-mail address! Thank's! Your interpretation is awesome!!
GroovyHoboz 3 years ago
I would love to do this for my speech team. Can you email me a copy of the script. Thanks....let me know via this site and then I will give you the address. You are awesome!!!

Excellent!
Your characterizations are phenomenal; I did Alice's Adventures with Poorly Cooked Cafeteria Seafood this past year and my Cheshire Cat was remarkably similar to your Mad Hatter. I love the unorthodox Cookie Monster characterization for Alice.
Great job!

I appreciate your complement!
One of my biggest competitors had that piece; we ended up being in many rounds together. It was interesting to see the different takes on a classic story.

Hey did you win state?
Chowderowens 3 years ago
Actually, I did not go to State. I championed at Sub-Sections, but the day of Sections I was rather ill. By the final round I had a terrible fever. Needless to say, it is difficult to perform such a physically demanding piece when the room is spinning. I performed poorly and placed sixth. I was still supposed to go to State with the other finalists on my team, but some smarty planned our prom that same day. Although I did wish to go, I decided I would have more fun at prom. I was correct.
LittlePatrician 3 years ago
In your video info it says that you participate in AA speech, how come you went to sub-sections because I thought Subs were for single A only?
