@toliverfive its just an expression.. any piece of wood or plastic will work. you are just running the edge over something like wood that will help strip any wire off the edge that is clinging to leave the true edge behind.
@mysss29 no worries. I am infact uploading a new convexing a folding knife video now.. its very lengthy, and talking a bit more on what you are trying to acheive. I also have in my convex play list a very detailed video demonstrating with CAD what you want to acheive. the new video highlights some of these points.. Have a look in an hour or so.
Hey, what was the second sandpaper you used? (between the 220 and the strop) I'm curious what the highest grit I really need is. (Currently all I have is a medium Arkansas and some leather, haha!)
@mysss29 yeah.. but in all honesty you can get a knife shaving sharp on almost any grit with compound. even 400 grit will give you quite a reasonably clean hair shaving edge after stropping. the higher polished grits may make the edge a bit more durable.
Well you see, I like to take my stones and sharpen as followed:
220, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 300, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 7000, 9000, 12000, 15000. Then I move up to the shaptons and other Japanese water stones, 16000, 20000, 25000 and finally 30000.
Also, I only sharpen un-tempered 420 J2 so it will need re-sharpening after just a few uses.
Great video and yea man I agree with you that anything above like 220 is a waste, I mean it does help, but if you actually use the knife often, you will spend as much time sharpening as using.
Maybe if you dont use the knife and it is only for display etc... than you can go through all the steps, but the de-burring is the most important part for sure!
I can make 220 razor sharp, but it definately wont hold the edge as long as a higher grit. The main thing here is that you can move from 220 to 800 very quickly and easily without the inbetweens.. and from there the compound can refine very well.. There is very little 1000 grit is probably the nicest clean slice, above 1000 i find a waste of time. I simply wanted to show, that you don't need to spend 20 minutes honing a knife every time you use it.. 20 seconds should be enough most of the time.
Excellent

I don't know much about burr sticks. Do you buy them or find them?

Awesome, now I know how to try sharpening (and convexing!!) once I get some sandpaper!

what is a burr stick?
utuubee 1 year ago
@utuubee any stick, plastic, etc thats softer than steel that you use to run the edge through and peel off any burr on the edge. hardwood is good.

Well.. I sure hope you not only record it, but do a full review on the un-tempered 420j2.. I bet that stuff is quite Tough ;)

Tough doesn't even begin to describe the amazing longevity Un-tempered 420J2 has! ;-D

and if you get hungry you can smack your knife flat for 20 minutes and fry an egg on it :)

Being able to bang a knife flat in a sitting is paramount! Now knivesandstuff gets it. ;D

Cool! Your hands move without any delay or hesitation. The result is superb. adding to that, your table is round shape and nice. Thanks.

Thanks Kyley. You've revolutionized my sharpening method.

...and that's how a master does it, huh?
Well, here goes nothing...lol.
Thanks again Kyley.
elpidi0526 2 years ago
hehe.. those masters have a good belt sander with 400 grit and let rip.. :D
I'm picking up some fine grit belts this weekend..
Just dont mess up the angles and slice through the sandpaper and strop :D
knivesandstuff 2 years ago 2
Very quick! I'll have to give that a try. :)
