I am a huge Patty Griffin song and believe that this is one of the best songs written in the last ten years. All in all, I'm really impressed with this version...man Kelly just nails it. That is FUCKED UP! Not only was season 9 the worst season of Idol ever! But the one that should have won didn't! Instead we as a country chose another carbon copy of the same person we picked for the past three years! But the worst part is that Crystal Bowersox didn't even get an original song as her single, she got a recycled one! But to witness an artist perform her own work, and do it as incredibly well as Patty Griffin, that's very special. I have been to Patty's concerts and they are memorable experiences. I like Reba but I agree that it is lame. The song was written as a tribute to MLK and it was inspired by his last speech. The fact that it says "expire" and not "retire" in the actual lyrics is important to the message of the entire song. It was lame indeed.
In the very beginning, Kelly hurried the lyrics and was a couple notes ahead of the piano. Reba camly looks at her with a loving concern. Kelly slowed down and Reba turned away as if she was thinking: "Kellys OK". I love that moment.
What I love about this song is its never the same, I dont think they have a set note pattern with the lyrics so its hard to say she was going to fast.
The best part of the song isn't the double note at the end, it's the heartfelt emotion and passion that can be felt from Reba and Kelly singing. The best part is the rawness and emotion that goes behind each word of the song, not the specific vocal capabilities a specific singer has.
Kellly and Reba are skilled performers, Patty is an artist. Both types are entertaining, but listening to Patty is a life affirming and changing experience. There is a good reason so many performers rely on her songs to given them a feel of "authenticity".
Kelly is also an artist. Her creativity is just suppressed because she has to make radio friendly songs, which is not a negative by any means. But look up "Kelly clarkson maybe"..she wrote that song herself..listen to the lyrics.

This might be my favorite song in the world. I love all incarnations of it. And I will add that today being Jan 13, MLK day is coming up soon here in the States. What better way to celebrate the life of one person who did so much for for peace and justice on earth, than with this tender and spiritual song? Music doesn't get any better.
Of lesser importance, but not to be overlooked, I think KC's new song should be out on radio TODAY!!!

I like Reba but I agree that it is lame. The song was written as a tribute to MLK and it was inspired by his last speech. The fact that it says "expire" and not "retire" in the actual lyrics is important to the message of the entire song. It was lame indeed.

In the very beginning, Kelly hurried the lyrics and was a couple notes ahead of the piano. Reba camly looks at her with a loving concern. Kelly slowed down and Reba turned away as if she was thinking: "Kellys OK". I love that moment.

What I love about this song is its never the same, I dont think they have a set note pattern with the lyrics so its hard to say she was going to fast.

You can tell she missed the high note... but she knew not to attempt it, probably because her voice was strained.
When she does hit the note though... WOW. Even still, she improvised REALLY well and sang it so soulfully.

The best part of the song isn't the double note at the end, it's the heartfelt emotion and passion that can be felt from Reba and Kelly singing. The best part is the rawness and emotion that goes behind each word of the song, not the specific vocal capabilities a specific singer has.

Kellly and Reba are skilled performers, Patty is an artist. Both types are entertaining, but listening to Patty is a life affirming and changing experience. There is a good reason so many performers rely on her songs to given them a feel of "authenticity".

Kelly is also an artist. Her creativity is just suppressed because she has to make radio friendly songs, which is not a negative by any means. But look up "Kelly clarkson maybe"..she wrote that song herself..listen to the lyrics.

It is, and they are. Kelly's gotta cover this song on her next album She needs to do a soul/blues album. She rushed it a bit, but sang it with conviction and pure talent. She's amazing, the best Idol. Rock & Pop doesn't do her voice justice.

I've been a Reba fan, but with few exceptions, she's just not cut out for duets. She's too overpowering and that yawl....
If you give Kelly a 10 for her version of 'Because of You' then Reba turns it into a 2.

Reba's the most country person I've ever seen. But she's as sweet as candy lol. Thery might not be the best duet, but you actually believe Kelly is on Reba's speed dial and Reba is on hers. Their true friendship is real and not put on.

elizamarie...the concert was simply mesmerizing! No costumes..no dry ice fog, no elaborate sets....just wonderful music by two very energetic singers who far surpass most others. to top it off....Melissa Peterman aka (Barbara Jean) was usual self....funny, funny, funny!
