Personally, I don't actually 'count' any of these odd time signatures. I 'feel' the beat.
It's hard to explain, but I find it much easier to simply drum along to the song, which if it happens to be in 7/8 or 9/8 or whatever, so be it. The drums just have to 'flow' with the music. Obviously this is not always easy to do - the 13/8 of Genesis's Robbery Assault & Battery is horrific to 'feel', but frankly, I defy anyone to actually count to 13!!!!

easy, count 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7, 1 + etc. the slwer the song, the easier to count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 10, 11, 12,13. but faster music should be counted in a not quite doubled system. Also most music in such long meters are really a combination of shorter meters in a cycle and can be counted that way, I'm very much into counting, it makes music much more alive to me to no exactly where each note is.
you could count it as 1234567 or if its easyer count it as 1234 123 (one bar of 4/4 and one of 3/4) the top note of the time signature is the number you count to before you start the next bar, the bottom number is the type of note you are counting. eg. 4/4 you count to 4 untill the next bar and you are counting in quater notes (1/4)

@emiel4sma I find it helps breaking odd times up into twos and threes. like 1212123 for 7 1231231212 for 10, etc. of course you can count in any grouping of twos and threes, these are just some simple ones.

If I attempted to count out the piece, I'd have been lost, Instead I learned to "sing" the song in my head while I applied my fingers to the guitar. That's the only way I could learn it. Different courses for horses and all that. This actually reminds me of watching Neal Peart's 'A work in Progress'. .

How do you count a measure of 7/4, or 7/8
I know 13/8 ( song like turn it on again,, 1234 1234 12345 , so 7/4 should be 1234567 right? ) but how do you count 7/8? anyone,, please help!!

7 beats, the 4 or the 8 simply says whether the quarter note or the eighth note gets the beat which you'd only use in reading music.

Flix sticks. These ones are fluorescent pink. They are a cross between brushes and wooden sticks, and are great for playing quieter.
