@figorocks Eli was the only opposing force in his life that he never completely dominated. At the end of the film, alcoholic and insane, his only way to complete satisfaction is destroying Eli altogether.

Also, as a friend of mine observed, it's possible he's so nuts that Eli isn't the first time this has happened.

@56FiftySix I love it when people say when the plot of a certain movie confuse them and they obviously didn’t watch the whole thing or didn’t pay close attention. Eli pushed Daniel’s buttons over and over again. Getting him to confess to sins he never had done, pressing on the subject of his son and getting him to say aloud, “I abandoned my child!” I’d hold a grudge against the little weasel.

At the very bottom Eli is a religious figure (corruptness or purity notwithstanding). Daniel despises religion itself and is violent towards those who profess to carry it in any form. By the onset of WWI, Daniel is out of the field in a mansion that he obviously doesn't value. Here comes this kid who, under the direction of his god (or corruption whichever) screwed with Daniel. He's been Daniel's enemy from the start. Plus, Daniel hadn't stretched his murder legs in a while.
