I would like to thank you for putting this on the tube, I have 5 of their vinyls with a double L.P.( Long player 33rpm) but you can't play them now, they don't fit into the C.D. player on the computor. Just shows how old I am, that I still have these plastic discs. However thanks to you, I can get on the tube and listen to this great instromentilist. its hard to relax after 7900 eartquakes in 14 months, but mate you have cracked it. Thanks again Dave
@Urkmigraft Some people would say a live performance sounding virtually identical to the record is a bad thing. "You might as well stay at home and listen to the record!" as they might say. I never took SKY to be a band who were too big on improvisation, though. I Suppose they preferred the classical approach of bringing a composition to life each time as it was written.
No bells and whistles needed when a Master picks up his guitar. Oh what a delightful experience. Gems are precious and these melodious notes sing all the way to my soul. How I needed it today. Thanks for this glorious gift of loving-ness. I accept with honor.:-)))
I love getting a huge nostalgia fix on youtube! Many thanks to all the users who appreciate good music and love sharing the wealth. This brings back so many sweet memories.
Sky were amazing. We only listened to BBC and I remember all the Sky tracks from late 70s early 80s were always on the radio. Hotta is one of my favourite Sky 2 tracks and Chiropedia No.1 from Sky 3 is a cracker but one of the best of all is Masquerade from Sky 4. Cadmium is good, then williams left it wasn't the same. His nylon string guitar makes it all brilliant! They were the days when people played and it sounds great, not like the shite being pumped down on top of us now by Radio Asshole!
DAMN! i have not heard this tune since my teacher played it in assembly at primary school, that is a decade and a half old! DAMN!!!!!! Thank you for bringing this back, found by fluke, enjoyed with taste.
love or hate this music... (I like it)...it is technically perfect and I have the great honour to be working wiht Herbie Flowers the base guitarist of this band... woo hoo... John Williams eh? you cant get much better than that... nor Herbie NIVER!
John Williams on guitar, he always managed to part from mainstream classical music, SKY was his little experiment....I regret this only lasted 3 albums...
Everyone in China knows, if they don't know the band, this song. It had been used as the ending title music of Animal World on the national channel for more than a decade!!
@fixbarber73 Yep,and this music is real, not like the computer generated and computer voice dubbed rubbish music of today.I'm mainly a heavy metal, punk rock, rock and roll fan but I grew up listening to sky and I still love their music and love watching them perform precision perfect music.
"The good old days. When only the music mattered. No poses, no dressing up."
.
Wait - this is the 1970s we're talking about, isn't it?
.
Rick Wakeman, Yes, Genesis, Prog, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Glam Rock?
.
There was more dressing up and posing in the freakin 70s than in the whole of the rest of music history put together! And I include Bach's wigs in that!... ; D
you have to have a good system to listen to this music , i listened to this 25 years ago in dolby and thought it was amazing and now its like neighbours complain ?
How I agree with you. When in the UK I had a fantastic system that would have picked up every instrument and every note, now all I can afford is a compact all in one job.. and its nowhere as good as it needs to be for this kind of intricate music... Enjoy what we can!
I purchased a copy of sky2 way back when I was a lot younger and it was just never out the tape player, next came this album and this track used to get blassed out the car on long journeys so often. Love it.
Just for info - it's now out again on remastered CD in the UK sounding great! I still think this is one of the best debut albums I have ever heard - wonderful! Where Opposites Meet is a brilliant piece of work.
If I'm not mistaken, Kevin Peek is playing an early Roland GR500 guitar synth in this clip. The simpler and more user-friendly later GR300 was aired quite often in live performance by Robert Fripp, Andy Summers, Pat Metheny, and others (including Peek if I'm not mistaken), but it's rare to see footage of a GR500 being played.
Kevin Peek played a variety of guitars - and you're right that his cherry red L5S seemed to be a favourite. I've had a closer look and this is definitely a GR500 Roland in this clip though - if you freeze it at 3.51 you can see the abundance of controls. The L5S is a superficially similar single cutaway shape, but has a more standard control layout similar to an SG or ES335.
Saw Sky Live at the Empire in Liverpool around abouy '81 or so, (back in the days when they actually had concerts on there) Really Excellent Show! Thanks for posting and bringing back so many memories
Westway - I believe the song was written on, (or about) driving down the Western Carrageway of the M4 from the West into London! Would Brentford Football Club be in the window somewhere? Is it about leaving the quiet countryside of Berkshire and entering into the bustle of West London. Or was it just an idea for the name of the piece? Maybe on the way to the Hammersmith Odeon? OK, who cares, great music. But maybe the composer could let us in on the secret one day! synth, harpsi, gtr, drum great
Almost Correct sunthisist. When listening to the masters in his car, Williams noticed that the duration of this song was exactly the same as the time it took him to drive the Western Carriageway.
I agree. This must be one of the most technically competent bands ever to have been formed. I was lucky enough to see them live in '81 in Sheffield and i remember to this day how utterly good they were. Im 40 now and it stay with me. Brilliant!
you lucky person! I by the time I was old enough to talk this band didn't exist any more. I stumbled across Dad's cassette copy of 'Sky 2' when I was ten and haven't looked back since! awesome stuff!
Thanks for posting this. I saw Sky five times in Liverpool in the early 80's, amazing musicians. John williams looks bored of his skull playing this!!
The BBC used some of their tracks on the series 'Great Railway Journeys Of The World' back in 1980's.

the key to a really well-sorted band is the quality of their live performance. You can't really tell this apart from the album track.

I was rumaging around through my local salvation army store the other week and i came across a brightly coloured vinyl with a larg SKY logo on it.
I love prog music, and for some reason this cover just screamed prog, so i took it home and my ears were greeted with an awesome sound assault.
THEN to my amazment, i went back the next day and found sky 2, 3 and 4 all in the same box!
What a find!
