@DarKnightofCydonia Yeah, I noticed that too! I found a site that says if the wafting blanket membrane doesn't scare off a predator, they can shed part of it to distract whatever is after them. They can probably move faster with it gone, too.
FYI this is a crazy fucking octopus...you know what it does if fucking rips off man o war stingers and uses them as a vemenous chain flail to hunt for prey.. looks can be deceiving
ahhh cthulhu. we meet again. man, things like this make me second guess wanting to be a marine biologist. shit be scary man XD amazing and beautiful, but fucking terrifying
@ElKuku9999 I actually saw this on some Disney program on Netflix, I think it's called "Oceans." To me some of the coolest animals are hardly ever shown on tv.
Magnificent.... like an undersea angel! Only thing I'd change is the background music; I think the "Aquarium" movement from Saint-Saëns' CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS would be perfect for this ethereal creature. Anyway, thanks for posting -- Liked and added to my "Not Just Cephalomania!" playlist.
whenever it really spreads it's "blanket" like tail, i seem to see images that remind me of the artwork of alex grey. i especially see his trademark eyeballs from the lateralus album by tool.
@villesangel666 I really just wanna ruin everyone's childhood so here it goes.
Octopus jacks off in a tube sock that is attached to its body, then, it cuts off its own tube sock, ties it in a bow, and hands it to its mate like the $10 bills your mother is handed. (Cheap Zing!)
@villesangel666 The male releases a tentacle that crawls inside the female and releases its sperm. (Just for those who can't be bothered to go look it up ;-)
@villesangel666 i dont know if it realy does that or if its a lie, but i read that it fils one of the tantacles with sperm and then he rips it of and gives it to the female.. sick..
the blanket most likely serves the same function as a geckoes tail. something extraneous that can be attacked while the octopus it's self makes a get away.
This species doesnt use ink...it uses that giant cape you see instead. Hence the name "blanket octopus". Interestingly, they also rip the poisonous tentacles off of the Man o' War and use them later for defensive purposes. Very intelligent. Also, this species has an extreme sexual dimorphism between sexes, the males are only about as big as your thumbnail, while the females are up to 2 or more meters long.
notice it gave warning flares (changed the colour of its skin with flashes of red/orange - nature's way of yellow "f- off"!) and left part of its veil behind? it was definitely threatened by the camera's approach...
can someone please tell me the name of the this song? :)

This remarkable cephalopod uses techno music as a defense mechanism, calming and soothing the predator into not eating it.

nice, also when it reproduces it fills a tentacle with seamen and tears it of and gives it to the female. lol

@Thunderpants121 They only unfurl the blanket when threatened, its what they use instead of Ink.
They also hang on to the limbs of Portuguese manowars for defense so don't get close either.

battleatbosworth 2 years ago
Then what is the thing that comes off the octopus? Something clearly detaches from the octopus, it looks like part of it's cape, but it can't be
SaiyanHajime 2 years ago
Could be part of the cape. Either way its definitely not ink...
battleatbosworth 2 years ago
Yeah I also read on wiki that it doesn't produce ink. That can't be cape though, as it disconnects from the body. Where do octopus poop from? :P
SaiyanHajime 2 years ago
Yeah fair enough, I see where you're coming from but I was talking biologically - I wasn't belittling your comment!
