  • can someone please tell me the name of the this song? :)

  • Am I on drugs or something? It feels like it after watching this.

  • I really dig the tie-dye blanket/cape from the 1960s.

  • This is still more appealing than the vampire squid.

  • It reminds us of the Guardians from the Green Lantern comics.

  • Did it just tear itself apart?

  • @DarKnightofCydonia Yeah, I noticed that too! I found a site that says if the wafting blanket membrane doesn't scare off a predator, they can shed part of it to distract whatever is after them. They can probably move faster with it gone, too.

  • Appropriate music.

  • IT'S A DEATH EATER!

  • @TheLolipolioli Don't you mean dementor? I got what you meant though!!!

  • a colourful death eater from harry potter.

  • FYI this is a crazy fucking octopus...you know what it does if fucking rips off man o war stingers and uses them as a vemenous chain flail to hunt for prey.. looks can be deceiving

  • look at that thing! man fuck that thing.. i would shit my self twice

  • it fucks like a horror movie

  • It's beautiful! Looks like a festive banner flowing in the wind.

  • This remarkable cephalopod uses techno music as a defense mechanism, calming and soothing the predator into not eating it.

  • nice, also when it reproduces it fills a tentacle with seamen and tears it of and gives it to the female. lol

  • I don't understand.

  • thats so awesome! it just looks like a flag in the breeze, incredible

  • ahhh cthulhu. we meet again. man, things like this make me second guess wanting to be a marine biologist. shit be scary man XD amazing and beautiful, but fucking terrifying

  • whats the song? sounds REALLY dam good

  • Wow.

That animal is so beautiful... oO

  • that thing looks like the thing from the abyss...

  • It looks like a flaming meteor falling underwater.

  • beauty full creature...what is the matching music playing!?

  • how come I've never seen this on discovery channel, animal planet, etc.???

  • @ElKuku9999 I actually saw this on some Disney program on Netflix, I think it's called "Oceans." To me some of the coolest animals are hardly ever shown on tv.

  • How cool is that? Thanks for sharing!

  • Magnificent.... like an undersea angel! Only thing I'd change is the background music; I think the "Aquarium" movement from Saint-Saëns' CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS would be perfect for this ethereal creature. Anyway, thanks for posting -- Liked and added to my "Not Just Cephalomania!" playlist.

  • I can't believe I have never heard of these beautiful creatures, it looks like something that could live in a salvador dali painting.

  • Quite beautiful.

  • Yeaaaah that thing stabs, octopus shouldn't stab.

  • Damn Nature you....comfy?

  • @undeadZeik LMAO

  • Nightmare??? I tink it's an amazing sea creature!

  • The music is perfect

  • beautiful:D

  • I WANT TO EAT IT !

  • cantik menawan...

  • Amazing creature

  • how did one of his blankets get torn off at 1:40?

  • @ThePsycoticboxman

    ITS A MEMBRANE

  • @bigmax209 oh! thanks! i know it's a membrane, i was just wondering how it got torn off.

  • At time index 1:40 this octopus appears to release part of the dermal skirt in a fright-flight reaction

  • My one question is... For as beautiful a country/continent as Australia is... Why does it seem EVERYTHING there is evolved to kill you? :-p

  • @Deron93 Thylacine....fuck that animal. Fuck it in the skull.

  • Я даже не знала, что такие существуют, очень красиво

  • whenever it really spreads it's "blanket" like tail, i seem to see images that remind me of the artwork of alex grey. i especially see his trademark eyeballs from the lateralus album by tool.

  • i have a question and if any of u can answer it PLEASE DO! is this beautiful animal endangered??

  • I saw this on Oceans.

  • beautiful =]

  • It's so beautiful!! Man, i'm never eating octopusagain

  • Looks like a Luugy.

  • its like a dementor of the sea

  • That is amazing...it looks almost as though it's waving a long flag trailing off behind...i like this ^ ^

  • ...Yup. I'm never going swimming again.

  • @Thunderpants121 They only unfurl the blanket when threatened, its what they use instead of Ink.

They also hang on to the limbs of Portuguese manowars for defense so don't get close either.

  • Awesome video and cool animal.

What's the name of this song and who is the artist? All around awesome.

  • you all should google how this octopus reproduces...its crazy and kind of gross...

  • @villesangel666 I really just wanna ruin everyone's childhood so here it goes.

Octopus jacks off in a tube sock that is attached to its body, then, it cuts off its own tube sock, ties it in a bow, and hands it to its mate like the $10 bills your mother is handed. (Cheap Zing!)

  • @villesangel666 i heard it fills a tube with sperm and rips it off and gives it to the female

  • @villesangel666 The male releases a tentacle that crawls inside the female and releases its sperm. (Just for those who can't be bothered to go look it up ;-)

  • @500p4 And then they die, or so it is presumed.

  • @villesangel666 i dont know if it realy does that or if its a lie, but i read that it fils one of the tantacles with sperm and then he rips it of and gives it to the female.. sick..

  • @villesangel666 not only that but they hunt by ripping off the stingers of a Man 'O' War jellyfish and uses them flails them like chains.

  • My god! It's underwater Superman!

  • the blanket most likely serves the same function as a geckoes tail. something extraneous that can be attacked while the octopus it's self makes a get away.

  • Oh !!

  • i don know how but part of the octopus cape broke off just nw. does it grow back?

  • @spidermoosa I would think so. I heard that they do this for defense, and they'd need to do that more than once

  • definitely from the cephalopod family

  • muslim mermaid

  • it's a sperm

  • Is that an ink squirt at 1:39-1:42?

  • This species doesnt use ink...it uses that giant cape you see instead. Hence the name "blanket octopus". Interestingly, they also rip the poisonous tentacles off of the Man o' War and use them later for defensive purposes. Very intelligent. Also, this species has an extreme sexual dimorphism between sexes, the males are only about as big as your thumbnail, while the females are up to 2 or more meters long.

  • Then what is the thing that comes off the octopus? Something clearly detaches from the octopus, it looks like part of it's cape, but it can't be

  • Could be part of the cape. Either way its definitely not ink...

  • Yeah I also read on wiki that it doesn't produce ink. That can't be cape though, as it disconnects from the body. Where do octopus poop from? :P

  • Yeah fair enough, I see where you're coming from but I was talking biologically - I wasn't belittling your comment!

  • is this like half octopus-half jellyfish creature?

  • It's in the octopus family, nothing like a jellyfish.

  • ohhh i see i see, but it's tail reminds of jellyfish

  • Which music is that?

  • jellyfish look all shapes and sizes.

  • it is not a jellyfish.

  • Such a beautiful creature. 1:42 is trippy.

    I'm diggin' the music.

  • Loox like from "The Abyss" movie.

  • By the way, it's common name is the blanket octopus.

  • What a fascinating creature! Just think of what other phenomenal products of natural selection are out there that we have yet to discover...

  • Very Beautiful. Its so exciting to discover a whole new type of animal.

Looks like he dropped his tail - like some lizards do. A decoy to help distract a predator, perhaps.

  • looks like good eatins

  • what happened at 1:42??

  • Yeah, I thought it was kind of weird to shake off part of the "tail" or whatever.... Still beautiful both before and after.

  • Probably makes it easier to swim, and it probably grows back.

  • do you think it may have dropped it to confuse it's potential enemies (camera man)?

  • not unlikely. Might buy enough time to ruuuns!

  • notice it gave warning flares (changed the colour of its skin with flashes of red/orange - nature's way of yellow "f- off"!) and left part of its veil behind? it was definitely threatened by the camera's approach...

  • Maybe it did a shit at 1:42?

  • stunning

  • Awesome. Really beautiful. Be prepared for the "its' fake" comment or the "god is so amazing" comments. ;)

  • Cool!

  • That thing is pretty cool looking...

  • Yeah, quite unique...

  • @burninspears ..do you know when this creature was discovered
