Apart from the horns this is more or less straight Duffy ... to see a brilliant and LIVE performance by her put 'Mercy Rock Werchter' in the youtube search.
@playbic15 ...see...all this fucking bitching from wankers was what killed the beautiful flower that was 'northern soul'.......ignore em kid, they don't know what day it is.....
Can we all attempt to get a grip here - this song may not be groundbreaking but it does hit the right buttons. And before anyone replies "NO I AM NOT A TOSSER !!"
I'm sure the "welsh twat" as some dimwit describes her will have her fingers crossed that this is a big hit ..... again. It's a better version than Duffy's although her live performances are pretty awesome ... check out Duffy Mercy Wercheter here on you tube as an example.
As someone who was buying Chicago blues records way back in the 60s, I'm amazed to learn that Marshall Chess is heavily involved in this Third Degree project .. all power to them..
Duffy writes the lyrics and top line melody for all her song .... that's why she'll be picking up the biggest share of the royalties if this version is a hit.
I LOVE this version of mercy; i absolutely despise duffy and her music. This just sounds so much more... real than duffy's song. I could listen to this for hours :):):):) Awesome.
duffy was made into this 60s style by her owners. she probably never wrote the song. this is the way the song should be done. why does she have northern soul dancers in slo-mo on her vid? because they couldn't dance to her record in real time. they wouldn't even cross the floor to the bar for duffy's
The South London-based group, The Third Degree, made a cover version of "Mercy" by incorporating it with classic style 60's theme. Was released as a single in the UK at March 9th, 2009.[22]
I reckon Duffy should be called Daffy. She sounds like a duck with a serious nasal problem. This version is superb. I heard it first on Wogan's show. I thought it was an old northern soul track. Brilliant...
I heard it on Wogan this morning too, was just searching for it online. What a cracker of a track. Like this, go and check out Lord Large, also on Acid Jazz records.
I realised it one breath after posting. Having spent the night listening to the roots in the shape of Barbara Dane, I was completely fooled by this version - although I was suspicious of the smashing production and sound. But I stand by my point: Duffy's a great singer and true to her feeling, and it's a great song. Check out Barbara Dane!
Great track! Fantastic cover. Don't mean to sound demanding here, but do you have the instrumental version MP3 at all? I'll happily slip you a few pounds over PayPal for it.
This,as we say in Glasgow is........NO BAD.... nice feel to it...it does sound as though it is an original, also sounds to me like a Timebox type track
Facinating marketing ploy.... release a linited 7 inch vinyl and it instantly becomes a Northern Soul cult classic . Okay so someone must be thinking a BIg revival is on it's way..... stand by Souled Out..... Actually it has revealed my own snobbery coz when i thought it was the original version I loved it.... now i know it's a cover i don't like it so much.... shocking ...
Much appreciated mate, but I have both versions now - just struggling to get them from vinyl into digital - my USB turntable was busted when it arrived, I'm waiting for a replacement!
Just heard this on Mark Lamar's Radio 2 show, God's Jukebox. I think this is definitely what it should've sounded like originally! Nothing against Duffy, but this is bloody brilliant!! Lovin' it!
Its a perfectly realised traditional Northern Soul record - three minutes of high-intensity soul energy. I can hardly believe that it's new! As soon as it kicks off I can visualise a sea of Oxford-bagged dancers at the Highland Room exploding in a fit of spins and kicks. A great, great record.

Duffy did not write Mercy as a soul song but, in her own words, as "a fun song about sex". See mojo4music on how Duffy wrote Mercy.
