  • flow man ! breakin' beat !!

  • This cover kick ass! Love both versions!

  • this version pisses all over duffy's although i do like her stuff. this one kicks ass big time

  • Finally!!! Love Duffy but this is a f-g great cover!! Even better than the original song, sorry Duffy darling. How about a duet?

  • Well as it happens Jon Allen the vocalist on this track is a backing singer on Duffy's forthcoming album

  • WOW - Bloody love this !!!

  • Apart from the horns this is more or less straight Duffy ... to see a brilliant and LIVE performance by her put 'Mercy Rock Werchter' in the youtube search.

  • Duffy did not write Mercy as a soul song but, in her own words, as "a fun song about sex". See mojo4music on how Duffy wrote Mercy.

  • lalalalalallalalaalalalalalalalalalalalaallaalalalalalalaslalalalalasls

  • This rocks! :D

  • Duffy wrote the song, this cover is OK but the singer ain't great.

  • the singer is great i think. i prefer this to the original

  • @solidpotato A bit harsh.. the guy sings this with soul

  • groovemungus,spot on soulie style, a proper cover,top job

  • a really good cover but cant beat the original

  • umm i doubt it seeing as she wrote it YOU FOOOL!

  • @playbic15 ...see...all this fucking bitching from wankers was what killed the beautiful flower that was 'northern soul'.......ignore em kid, they don't know what day it is.....

  • lalalaallaLALALALALALALLLALALAALALALALALALALALALA

  • simply brilliant, love this cover!!!!

  • Wow dit is echt super. Mijn zus hoorde dit op KX radio en vond het direct fantastisch.Wat een geweldige cover!

    English translation:

Wow this really is great! My sister heard this on KX radio and immediately thought is was fantastic. What a terrific cover!

  • Achtung Spitfire!

  • that dude was from the netherlands you dumb shit.

  • Well doooneeeee...

  • Can we all attempt to get a grip here - this song may not be groundbreaking but it does hit the right buttons. And before anyone replies "NO I AM NOT A TOSSER !!"

  • Great! :D

  • fab version,sajman213-listen to it it in welsh, even better. diolch (ps,non welsh speaker)

  • I love the music in it, but don't like the guy's voice! Still prefer the welsh twat singing it :)

  • I'm sure the "welsh twat" as some dimwit describes her will have her fingers crossed that this is a big hit ..... again. It's a better version than Duffy's although her live performances are pretty awesome ... check out Duffy Mercy Wercheter here on you tube as an example.

As someone who was buying Chicago blues records way back in the 60s, I'm amazed to learn that Marshall Chess is heavily involved in this Third Degree project .. all power to them..

  • Great!

    Stevie Winwood homeage i think.

  • PODBESKIDZIE

  • WELL DONE bluesoulady U R SOMEONE WITH A SHED LOAD OF TASTE !!

  • this is a cool version, i love duffy music and i love this, its different, both are good, and very different, which to me , is cool!

  • YOU AINT WRONG - AWESOME !!

  • fucking wicked version.

heard it on the radio this morn, it blows the original out the water.

    amazing production!

  • Heard this on Radio 2 tonite - blew me away. Unbelievable - just shows how a limpid little song can have balls!!!

  • love it love it love it so much better

  • I think duffy's version is cool but i prefer this one ;) x

  • Duffy writes the lyrics and top line melody for all her song .... that's why she'll be picking up the biggest share of the royalties if this version is a hit.

  • A cool tune, AND it has a Flash Man riff. =D

  • Is this a cover of Duffy's song or is it the original version?

  • I LOVE this version of mercy; i absolutely despise duffy and her music. This just sounds so much more... real than duffy's song. I could listen to this for hours :):):):) Awesome.

  • Alas, he is wrong. Song was written by Duffy and Steve Booker.

  • This is 10,000,000 times better than the Duffy version, mainly because it hasn't got her stupid squeaky little voice all over it.

  • duffy was made into this 60s style by her owners. she probably never wrote the song. this is the way the song should be done. why does she have northern soul dancers in slo-mo on her vid? because they couldn't dance to her record in real time. they wouldn't even cross the floor to the bar for duffy's

  • Scuse my ignorance but which version was first, this or Duffy? Cheers.

  • Cover versions

The South London-based group, The Third Degree, made a cover version of "Mercy" by incorporating it with classic style 60's theme. Was released as a single in the UK at March 9th, 2009.[22]

  • I believe it was Duffy. Although I have many connections in my life with AcidJazz Records, but I even think that Duffy wrote it or something.

    So ye, probably Duffy :D

  • Duffy's was first ;)

  • Heard this on the radio for the first time the other day. Knocks the socks off the Duffy version!

  • DicDeryn i think you'll find its 3rd degree thats been picking up the royalties.....

  • First Class !!!

  • dnt no what every 1 has gt a problem with duffy for , but this version is way better

    KTF !

  • Hope this is a hit, and insult Duffy all you like, she's the gal who'll be collecting the royalties.

  • I reckon Duffy should be called Daffy. She sounds like a duck with a serious nasal problem. This version is superb. I heard it first on Wogan's show. I thought it was an old northern soul track. Brilliant...

  • yeh me too

  • heard this for the first time at bridlington weekender this weekend

    fantastic love it

    great dancer !!

    KTF

  • very northern soul!!!!

  • Heard this thanks to the ol' TOGmeister too. And what a wonderful version!

  • Heard this on the TOGmeister's show this morning and it blew me away. Agree with everyone here, thi is so much better than Duffy, utterly brilliant!

  • Soooo much better than Duffy's one.

  • This is so much better than the original!

  • Cool. It was Wogan's show that I heard it too. Never underestimate how powerful Radio 2 is.

  • this is ****in the best . KTF.

  • must have been alot of us listening to Tel, this is a great version of a great song.

  • love this version...better than the original in my opinion.

  • Heard it to on Tel's show...Love it!!!!

  • Gotta love Ol' Tel..that's how I found this too, fab track. And how the hell can we NOT compare it to Duffy when it's a copy?? Tchh...

  • WOW!Heard this on Wogans show!! this morning couldnt believe how good it sounded.

  • I heard it on Wogan this morning too, was just searching for it online. What a cracker of a track. Like this, go and check out Lord Large, also on Acid Jazz records.

  • Thanx, alexaspin1,

I realised it one breath after posting. Having spent the night listening to the roots in the shape of Barbara Dane, I was completely fooled by this version - although I was suspicious of the smashing production and sound. But I stand by my point: Duffy's a great singer and true to her feeling, and it's a great song. Check out Barbara Dane!

  • Thanx Duffy, for being true to the groove and bringing it on to the next generation.

It's not your fault if the original outshines you - you're probably the reason we found it.

  • Just to point out...

This isn't the original. Duffy's version is the original.

This came out a few months ago and was done by some producers called the Third Degree

But it does piss all over Duffys.

  • true-its superb-i too was fooled!

  • Duffy, eat your heart out!

  • Now that is music to make you happy!!

  • what's on the other side of the record? I heard it was a good northern soul -ish instrumental

  • Stop comparing it with origial from Duffy lets just except they are two Brilliant versions of a great song

  • i wont ever compare it to duffys version. thats fucking shit in comparrison. NOW LETS NOT TALK OF HER EVER AGAIN!!!! ha ha fucking ha.

  • they have just put this on a ministry of sound compilation cd, saw the ad last night.

  • Fuck off, Duffy.

  • gotta love Northern Soul

  • Great track! Fantastic cover. Don't mean to sound demanding here, but do you have the instrumental version MP3 at all? I'll happily slip you a few pounds over PayPal for it.

  • god that sound s great

  • thats brill

  • This,as we say in Glasgow is........NO BAD.... nice feel to it...it does sound as though it is an original, also sounds to me like a Timebox type track

  • F**K ME! What a brilliant cover version!

  • I think this track is very cool!

  • Great version, great singer!!

  • I've got to say this is nothing short of the brillant rewrite mercy deserved!...time to get the talc out

  • its sound is great

  • Facinating marketing ploy.... release a linited 7 inch vinyl and it instantly becomes a Northern Soul cult classic . Okay so someone must be thinking a BIg revival is on it's way..... stand by Souled Out..... Actually it has revealed my own snobbery coz when i thought it was the original version I loved it.... now i know it's a cover i don't like it so much.... shocking ...

  • WOW! I also just heard this on Mark's show - AMAZING! I'm a singer, and I'm PRAYING somebody makes a backing track for this!!!!

  • If you purchase the vinyl 7" on the b side there is an instrumental version

  • Thank you SOOOO much mate!

  • no problem, though get it quick as its limited to 2500.

  • Luckily for me, I just bought the last copy from the eBay shop!!!! WOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • I have the instrumental if you need it... you got to send me your evrsion for free thou ???

  • Much appreciated mate, but I have both versions now - just struggling to get them from vinyl into digital - my USB turntable was busted when it arrived, I'm waiting for a replacement!

  • Just realised what you meant! If you want to hear me doing it, I;d be happy to oblige....send it on over to rwrastus @ yahoo . com

  • Just heard this on Mark Lamar's Radio 2 show, God's Jukebox. I think this is definitely what it should've sounded like originally! Nothing against Duffy, but this is bloody brilliant!! Lovin' it!

  • Bloody Hell! Awsome stuff ordering my copy now!

  • 1st time i heard this was on the craig charles show on radio 6, amazing, cant stop listening to it. thanks for posting.

  • Wow! This stopped me in my tracks. Best thing I've heard since.........well ages..

  • Class. :D

  • Got mine on Order! WOW!

Note to Duffy Producers "This is how it should be done"

  • Yes yes! Much more dancefloor too- drum hits harder!

  • wow! so much better than duffys version! bought my copy right away! dancefloor killer!

  • sounds like sum of the horns are taken from ( there was a time) gene chandler at 2 min 15 / 16 seconds good version tho

  • And yes, it does sound a lot like "I'm a man" by the Spencer Davis Group.

  • Yep, that's the one I meant! You're dead right, 60s R & B sound.

  • I like both versions. Already ordered my copy of this 7"!

  • top track jo

  • much better than the Duffy version - well for me it is anyway!

  • Thx Jo. It is a good version. Sounds weird at first listening to it by someone else !

  • Its a perfectly realised traditional Northern Soul record - three minutes of high-intensity soul energy. I can hardly believe that it's new! As soon as it kicks off I can visualise a sea of Oxford-bagged dancers at the Highland Room exploding in a fit of spins and kicks. A great, great record.

  • Takes me back to Stax and Atlantic soul days. Love the brassy sound.

  • I don't know if it is genuine Northern, these days it is difficult to say what that means with precision because it is 'such a broad church'! I don't think the original version is very Northern either but both have some Northern elements. It has an old R & B feel to it (Keep on running, Spencer Davis?) very 60s. I like it. ktf

  • Respect where its due to both artists cos it is a brilliant track full stop. BUT what a bloody stormer this is I cant wait to play this out on a good sound system as a DJ and a dancer its this one for me hands or should that be feet down LOL......

  • Nice one

  • What a blinder.

  • much better that duffys' effort!!

  • I'm a big Northern Soul fan.

I've loved Northern Soul since the 1970's.

BUT Sorry mate to my ears this not a patch on Duffy's version.

Also I think duffy's version sounds more Northern than this.

Having said that This version isn't bad at all in fact it's quite good..

  • didn't want to start a musical debate, just giving my own opinion on this, maybe its because i'm fed up listening to the duffy version and this just sounds a bit fresher to me, and anything northern is good for me. ktf

  • ps. i've a youtube video on with 3 duffy songs, so i've definately nothing against her

  • I didn't want to start a debate either I was expressing my opinion to.

After all this version wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Duffy, don't forget she wrote it as well. I didn't slag this version off, I quite like it. I've acually revisited the vid 3 or 4 times since my first listen, so it must have struck a chord somewhere.

  • * * * * * post!

    thanx to 777 for sharing!

    Lee

    Liverpool Mods.

  • This is on my shopping list & favs, Love it

  • Like it! Powerful version!

  • brill ktf
