  • good video

  • do you have a video of you changing the axle shaft on one of these cars. I have a 2002 grand prix and its basicly the same.

  • @chaosad09 I don't

  • @richpin06a thats ok. I figured it out. word to the wise though. although very helpfull, sometimes Haynes books can be very vauge. btw thanks for posting these videos.

  • I use your videos alot. They are very helpful and right to the point. But i was wondering if you may have one for a 94 geo tracker front hub removal its 4wd.

  • @rodger14s I have not done one as of yet.

  • rich, im doing a similar job on my 2000 impala in that im changing out the right front cv axle. is there a specific procedure for separating the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint? im having the hardest time with it.

  • @MrPizzaboy88 If it is that stubborn you might have to use a ball joint separator.

  • Cleans threads.

  • Just for my own education, why did he loosen the bolt, re-tighten it twice before he removed it?

  • It is NEVER a good ides to use a air hammer on an aluminum steering knuckle!

  • i have an 02 impala the abs light came on constantltly trouble code said it was wheel bearings had em replaced twice each time within a year same thing turns out its the wireing harness got that done no probs ever since these years froms 2000 on have horrid probs with this there junk the electrical system is sorely flawed along with turn signal issues that is caused by a faulty hasard light switch dont buy one it'll nickle and dime

  • Just used this video to replace the front wheel bearings on my 2002 Impala and it was great. The job went just like the video said it would. Cv joints next.

  • thanks rich, replaced the hub on a 2001 chevy blazer. had some trouble with the axel , finally got it out of the hub. awesome video

  • @reddog9401 Glad everything worked out.

  • @Paulyfr3sh mine did the same thing my buddie replaced the Bearing and tire rode end. but the lights never went out for me, I just don't have the E brake light unless I unplug the fuse for my ABS. Then it comes on.

  • I have a 2002 grand prix. My abs light is on, and my E brake light is on as well as the traction control is off. I know its the front right wheel. Where do i go from there? Im guessing its the caliper or the bearing?

  • @Paulyfr3sh Can you get a ABS code reader that would help allot in finding the problem. If i was to make a guess i would say it is the wheel sensor or the wire at the sensor that possibly is the problem.

  • I have a 1997 grand prix and i was wondering is the shield you spoke of, is that what the abs connector clips onto ?

  • @jango67 Yes i believe the shield was for the abs sensor.

  • Im going to attempt this on my 2000 grand prix . Its the same exact process right ? Even if its got ABS . And as far as the puller goes, i have one that I used to pull of steering wheels and a harmonic balancer . Do you think it would work ? Thanks !

  • @peagravel It is not the same exact process as i did hear if you have ABS.The puller you have for the steering wheels and a harmonic balancer will not work for pulling the wheel bearing.

  • @richpin06a OK. Thanks .

  • hey rich, is it the same process for a 2001 chevy blazer 4 wheel drive, thanks

  • @reddog9401 Yes it is a boltable wheel bearing like this one.

  • i replaced mine today. thank you!

  • @alathea1 just using the vibration of the chisel to work the bearing assembly free

  • Comment removed

  • How can he tell if it is frozen be barely hit it with a tiny hammer! (by the way this is a non-ABS vehicle)

  • @charles81265 Do you mean how can you tell when the bearing is bad?

  • Hey Richpin! Thanks again for all of these vids = Great work!

I know you get this type of question a lot, but how similar is this process to replacing the hub/bearing in a 2002 Saturn SL? I bought the hub and bearing, but am wondering if it's something I want to get into myself?

    Thanks in advance!

  • @Vaught68 The front wheel bearing replacement on the impala is nothing like the SL.On the Sl you have to press the bearing out of the knuckle.

  • great video, very helpfull. Thank you

  • should it be the same for a 99 malibu LS?

  • @GTPrecordZ Pretty much the same if you have abs the bearing will have a sensor on it.

  • @richpin06a the car has abs but it never worked ? and what about if i want to change the bearing alone and keep my old hub ? thanks alot i appreciate the help

  • @GTPrecordZ All the ones i have seen come as assembly with the hub

  • @richpin06a alright thanks and my friend told me i would have to loosen the tie rod ? is this possible ?

  • @GTPrecordZ You can replace the bearing without touching the tie rod

  • you dont tighten a bearing with an impact gun you use a torque wrench and tighten it to 148lbs or the bearing will wear out to early

  • Hey richpin quick question: when compressing the caliper piston, you press up against the brake pad itself right? I know that's a dumb question.....

  • @sharpshoota21 I remove the brake pads and use OEM/Disc Brake Caliper Tool Set 27111

  • now what lol

  • What size bit takes off the axle nut?

  • @csimons4266 36mm

  • @richpin06a Thanks. I just replayed the video and heard you say it in the beginning. Sorry. I read around and there are several people who said it's different depending on the brand. Some are 34mm. Either way, a 36mm should be fine. Thanks again.

  • @csimons4266

I've been working on my Father's Grand Prix GT(05 or 06, I can't remember) and the axle nut is a 33mm.

Its been through that many Canadian winters so every bolt has been a struggle. We've broken two sets of hub pullers trying to get the old bearing off already and its still not off.

  • @terbo2000 they are a pain in the ass, i just cut the top of the bolts off with a cut off tool and then they just screwed right out, went up to lowes and got some replacement bolts was easier than fighting them, rounding the heads etc.

  • Hi, man, thanks a lot 4 a video;

do i need to grease the axle a bit , and put a thread lock on hub bolts? what about a torque wrench? i have an impact gun without a meter, can i use it to tighten the hub and axle nut?

  • @emaxn A little grease is ok,blue locktite on the three hub bolts. What i do is adjust my air pressure and use my impact gun to tighten the axle nut.

  • Hello i gotta question and maybe someone can help me out here. I have a 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp and i have replaced new wheel bearings, new cv halfshafts, and new tires and durring any type of acceleration or turning to the right only my car makes this horrible groaning with alot of vibration only under take off. please help me out!!!!! possible transmission bearing???

  • could you not hace used a 4 jaw puller as the drive shaf has a center taper on it for you to use a puller but must say good job

  • I have a chevy malibu 2001 it's the same prcedure? I apreciate your answer and thanks for this video really helpful.

  • @chalioba I have not done a 01 malibu but the bearing looks the same.

  • @richpin06a Thanks, i'am going to try it and i let you know the results..

  • hey richpin...do you have a video on replacing front drivers side axle on the saturn s-series...and let me just add you are the king...i've said it before..i'll say it again..all videos that are posted about how to do it should take note from you...your descriptive in explaining the process..and leave nothing out...keep up the good work

  • @Graderman35 I do not for the Saturn at this time so i will make sure when one pops up i will video it.I just did a neon transmission replacement video that has some similar aspect to the Saturn in it.

  • Why did you use a 6 point on the back 3 bolts rather than a 12 point?

  • @ironman1438 The bolts are really on there so i did not want to chance rounding the heads of the bolts.

  • @richpin06a This is smart. I just round off my roommates, but AllData suggests buying new ones anyways.

I accidently messed up the threads while breaking the axle loose where the axle nut starts. I've tried with a thread chaser and no luck so far. Any suggestions? Have any videos on replacing the whole front axle?

  • @pb1051 If it is not to bad try to find the right size thread die to repair it.If it is to bad then it would be wise to replace the driveshaft.

  • @richpin06a is a 1" 14 thread the right size die? It's a 2004 Impala. I would think it is the same as the Grand Prix...

  • umm......That's a wheel cover....not a hubcap.

  • @smuthwaters umm......That's a jerk comment....not genius.

  • @DrumBass98 Didn't say it was genius-like. It would be ignorant to call it a hubcap though. Just like rims for wheels and wheels for a car. It just shows a person's ignorance and stupidity when he says it that way.

  • What brand of bearing do you use?

  • @ironman1438I use timken when i can

  • Replaced the wheel bearing today on the 98 buick park ave.all went well .I tighten the axle nut to 107 ftlbs. and the three bolts that hold the bearing 70 ft lbs.Does that sound right to you? just want to double check

  • @ironman1438 That sounds in the ballpark

  • Besides unpluging the abs cable is task any different? for abs ?

  • Richpin I love your videos,I have '98 buick park ave ,will this video cover the park ave also?

  • @ironman1438 The only difference i see is you have ABS

  • very nice thanks goodyear quoted $189.50 to do autozone part for 97 pontiac sunfire $79.99 for timkin bearing assy at autozone. this part of country is poor: $9.00 labor . who can afford $80.00 hour goodyear labor??

  • very nice thanks goodyear quoted 189.50 to do autozone part for 97 pontiac sunfire 79.99 for timkin. this part of country is $9.00 labor so the goodyear boss can have his yacht

  • I have a question.my Toyota corolla makes a loud grinding noise every Time I speed up. When I hit 15 to 20 mph is when you can hear and feel the sound and louder after I hit a higher speed.I lifted it up and I tried spinning the tires on neutral one by one and the front left tire is hard to turn opposed to the left. Is this wheel bearing problem or something else? Let me know.. My email is jerardo3_@hotmail.com

  • Quick question. Could a worn wheel bearing cause vibration in the steering wheel at speeds of 65+ in an Impala like this, or would that be more of a warped rotor or tire balance issue? Great video.

  • @WickedWings07 if the bearing is worn quite a bit sure you could get vibration at those speeds.

  • Rich, how do I move the axel in? it wont move.

  • @johndawad You can use the axle nut to draw the axle into the bearing.

  • @richpin06a Thanks man!....I live in MN and that hub was a beast to take off.

  • @johndawad Thanks man! I got it out... No kidding, I live in MN and that bearing was a B%&$#@ to get out.

  • What are the torq spec.. on a transmission pan got to change mine out it has the 3400 in it

  • looks like my old car.

  • I have come to the conclusion that my car's issue may be in the transaxle....a bearing in there.....as I have replaced both front hub/bearing assemblies, along with the cv joint/axle assemblies....and the noise is still there......growling under 30...louder noise at 40-50 which turns into a buzz at 60-70 mph......may be a bearing in the axle/final drive....as I can't see what else it could be with the parts that I have replaced so far...

  • not even worth ur time to work on a pos like that

  • Re my question from earlier today regarding the steering knuckle removal on my 2005 Impala for cv joint axle shaft removal...I took care of it.....removed the bolts connecting the knuckle to the strut shaft and was able to swing the knuckle without having to remove the knuckle from the balljoint........a prybar got the old axle shaft out and the new one snapped right in without a hitch......will do the passenger side axle shaft another day......

  • Can you post a video on how to change the front axle assemblies/cv joint asseblies on a 2000-2005 Impala? I have to loosen the steering knuckle and swing it out of the way in order to get the axle out....but I have having a devil of a time trying to separate the steering knuckle from the balljoint/lower control arm assembly.....I have to somehow lift the knuckle up and away from the balljoint stud..the stud comes up from beneath into the bottom of the knuckle and I cannot get it separated...

  • Hi Rich very info video also nice job I wanted to know what size axle nut on a Pontiac Sunfire 2000 2.2 ? and keep up the good work

  • thanks

  • can you change Lower Ball Joint on this car or thise is diffcult?

  • @Aleks7923 Not to bad, drill out the rivets holding the ball joint in place and replace with a new joint that comes with new bolts to replace the rivets.

  • 2000 Impala!.............I'll bet every major component of that car has been replaced at least once. Transmission? Maybe 2 or 3 times.

Not to mention all the switches and motors and other crap, like seals and hinges.

    Quality car, good times.

Just jack-up the windshield wipers, and drive a new can under them.

  • Great vid!!!! Atleast I know what im up against..... Breaking bah..lmao!

  • To add to the comments on my 2005 Impala, I had the wheel bearings replaced at 92,000 miles....does not make a difference....am also hearing a clicking from front right wheel when making slow right turns.....Can CV joints mimic the sound of bad wheel bearings when they go bad?

  • @ns3330 Sounds like you have a bad CV joint. When checking for a bad wheel bearing turn the steering wheel left and right while driving in a straight line if the pitch of the noise changes that is a worn wheel bearing.

  • @richpin06a Thanks.... After having a shop replace my bearings at 92,000, I thought they were defective, so I just changed my left bearing myself and have yet to do the right....no change in the noise level....so I am figuring the CV joints as the problem now...The shop misdiagnosed a bad tie rod end as a loose bearing because I had some side to side play on the right wheel....I replaced the tie rod end myself.....

  • Can bad CV joints sound like bad wheel bearings? I have a 2005 Impala and hear a bearing type noise in the front end....most pronounced between 40 and 60 mph....sounds like a woooo at 40 and a buzz at 60....more like a grinding lower pitched noise from 30 mph downward that varies with speed.......

  • I'm hoping to do this this weekend. Thanks for the vid.

  • Thank You! Great job on the video. I'm thinking about doing mine, and it's helpful to know what the job takes.

Thanks also for mentioning about $ you get when we click on Ad's. I didn't know about that. Hope it pays you a ton!

  • @peggenberger The Ads only pay a few dollars a day but when you are as poor as i am every little bit helps.....thank you everyone that clicks on the AD's

  • thanks a ton for posting this video, best on you-tube..i wil be replacing the front wheel bearing on my 1995 GM soon...

  • you just saved me sooo much money thank youuuuuu!!!!!

  • Hey rich, on my Kia, the repair manual states something like it's best to leave this job to a pro because of the special pulled required, I don't have air tools, do you think I can get the puller or should I bring this in to my mechanic, thanks for any advice

  • @lobextomy Some vehicles require you to press the bearing in and out.If you do not have a press you still can get the job done by removing the spindle and taking it to a machine shop for the bearing replacement.

  • Gotta love Pink.

  • Thank you

  • wheel baaarin!

  • We need to teach Rich how to say his "a's" correctly.

  • You have great videos Rich, but DO NOT, use an impact wrench to remove the axle nut unless you are replacing the half shaft as well. Use a breaker bar. The impact wrench could shock the good CV axle and damage it.

  • i got a 2001 impala base model 3.4. its ride like crap right now. my front end sounds like my wheel are wobbling or flat. i can feel it in my steering wheel as well, i can see steering wheel twitch. i changed my brakes the other day and seen ps axle throwing grease. any idea what could be making my car ride so crappy. .....

  • If you have grease under there you need to check you axle boots.

  • Good Video. But wow that impact wrench is weak.. lol juzt saying... it take me about 3 seconds to take that bolt off with the Mopar impact.... good tools are worth it people! :]

  • Good honest video.

    Thanks

  • @SlyToocan Thank you.....o if you happen to see any advertisements on my videos please click on them it will pay me back.

  • Thank you. This was helpful.

  • Great video. Thank you.

  • Thank you for this video you gave me an indication what type of labor is required, I could buy the parts and give a mechanic 100.00, viola problem solved. These clowns wants to charge me 325.00 to replace tie rod ends, and 235.00 to remove and install wheel bearing. HA!

  • would this be around the same as doing a toyota celica gt4 4wd front wheel bearing

  • nice vid, i have to do a wheel bearing in my 03 impala.. simple enuff nice job

  • Thanks Richpin for the videos. Helped me out alot on replaceing mine on my 97 Grand Prix. Thanks for sharing the info!

  • i have a 2004 model chevy impala, i hear a chucking/rubbing sound only when im going under 25 miles per hour, what could it be? I found cracks in my tire also.

Are the wheel bearing and the wheel hub assembly the same thing?

  • Could be the brake indicators that tell you the brakes need replacing.

    Yes

  • It was the tire, got all new tires and the sound went away.

  • Video is perfect. I have a 2002 Buick LaSaber with 100K miles. Before I started the job I sparyed the large nut with penetrating oil for 2 days. No problem taking anything off. Thank you very much for posting the detailed video. You saved me $400.

  • Comment removed

  • YOU ARE MY HERO!!

  • I just finished it! Thanks again for the video! It was much easier than I would have thought, but I would have taken it to the shop if I hadn't seen your video.

  • This is sweet! I have a 2000 Impala and will be doing this exact thing this weekend. It will be much less expensive than heading out to the shop.

    Thanks for the video!!!

  • Thank you very much for posting this video. I followed your instructions and was able to do the job myself. I saved myself about $450 over what Firestone wanted to charge me. Again, thanks...

  • Glad I found this! Very good delivery, clear and concise. Great video. Great information. I'm going to try and fix mine now!

  • by far the best info Ive found thanx ..good job ,
