That is amazing! I love how they did that, great effects & model work. I'm glad the film was restored. I'm sure they had survivors / witnesses who helped them recreate what happened.
crazyjoel123: Martinique is an Island in the Caribbean, a French overseas department. Paris, of course, is the capital of Metropolitan France, in Europe. Even today, you'd struggle to go to Paris and back in two days. In 1902, the round trip (per ship), would take you 4 to 6 weeks. I don't doubt for a second the veracity of your grandfather's account, but if he scooted to Paris and back overnight his name must have been Clark Kent.
Wow, I herd story's of my great grandfather and a couple of his friends took a trip there for 5 days, during the 5th day he went to Paris to do an unknown project, his friends decided to stay till he came back, two days later he came back and the whole place was nothing but rock, burned bodies, and ash. Luckily his friends survived but were 3rd degree burned. And thats how he was that close to death.
@crazyjoel123 There were only 2 survivors: a prisoner held in a thick walled cell, and a shoeshiner living on the edge of town. so unfortunatly what you heard was not accurate
No, there was more than one survivor than Sylbaris. Sylbaris came to fame because he traveled with Barnum Bailey Circus, and sold more ticket by saying he was the only survivor. There are other videos on You Tube that support this claim including a little girl who was found on a small boat in a cave who had burns, but also survived. Honestly, I do not think we will ever know the true statistics of how many really survived, and died in this sad, and horrific tragedy.
It really wasn't random, there was a black pyroclastic (fire) cloud that glowed red from the inside that swept over the town and torched anything flammable, incinerated people and or scorched their lungs
This old film is pretty close to how Pelee wiped out Saint-Pierre. Remember that until Alfred LaCroix studied this mountain after the infamous 1902 (8 May) eruption that wiped out Saint-Pierre, there was little information on a deadly form of eruption, the emission of pyroclastic flows and surges.
This is a fascinating document! The volcanic eruption that destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre on the island of Martinique and that killed all the 30.000 inhabitants is one of the great desasters of the 20 th century - but very little known. It is interesting to see, how they tried to render the desaster in this movie... Thank you for restauring and posting this movie!
this is real..?
