If you compare CC in the final of the Season 2 and this movie, you see that He was more strategic, machiavelic than the first and more calm. At the end of Season 2 Even Mindbender was tired of Serpentor. They should have restore CC as a leader but well....Now, they use to increase is power with a Humanoid community that change Gi Joe from realistic action TV shows to Sci-Fi.
This movie should be seen as a spin off and not the real GI JOE
@Huckel2x It may be best, as you say, to view it as a spin off and not GI Joe per se. That being said, this movie was attempting to set the stage for the non-existent 3rd season, which would itself have radically altered the series much the way TF season 3 did following that series' movie. On a side note, I still maintain how utterly stupid it was to treat CC the way this movie did. I understand change is required if something is going in another direction, but the CC change was horrid.

Apparently Golobulous was such a pain in the ass, that he teamed up with Unicron in the comics, which made him a threat to both Transformers and G.I. Joe...BTW I do agree that the whole CC trail and punishment thing was difficult to swallow...Especially since it contradicts his early appearances when you sorta get glimses of him without the mask..

While the CC punishment thing was my primary complaint about this movie, your observations (or critique?) of the Cobra La angle in general is dead-on accurate. I think it would have been significantly more entertaining had the series (and maybe even this movie) gone the "Most Dangerous Man" route instead of the Serpentor/Cobra-La way. Imo, this movie validates that old adage about something looking great on paper, but terrible in execution.
The moment beginning at 02:44 in this clip was, imo, the death blow to this movie. Up until this moment, the movie worked well enough (despite the dumb Cobra-La angle), but the "punishment" of Cobra Commander like this was the true game ender. CC was my favorite character, and to see this happen to him ruined what could have been an epic tale. I did enjoy the movie up to the punishment scene, but during and after punishment, it became difficult to care about anything else in the movie. Oh Well.

In the Devil's Due comic books, Cobra Commander's defeat of Serpentor is even more satisfying. They fight on top of a waterfall. Serpentor overcomes C.C. and demands that he remove his helmet before he kills him. C.C. obeys (he's wearing another mask underneath). The helmet explodes in Serpentor's hands, severely injuring him. C.C. taunts Serpentor, then kicks him off the waterfall to his death. Later, the body is recovered and used for spare DNA parts.
has anybody noticed that snakeeyes his sword inside the jail cell. also they had grenades and other armaments? why did roadblock have to break a piece of the cell to use as a weapon.
Why is Zartan personnally insulted when Cobra Commander said he was betrayed? All of Cobra betrayed Cobra Commander one day or another. It must be Zartan's paranoia taking over and he feels personnally aimed at.
Serpentor looks like a shy high school boy when Pythona congratulates him.
This is a great movie. You cannot compare this movie to the new one that came out in 09. The new movie that they made in 09 is a disgrace to G.I. joe and what it truly stands for. Personally I like Cobra Commander. He is an intelligent villain despite the fact that serpentor usurp his power and was turned into a snake. The cool thing is the name GI Joe came from an old movie starring Burgess Merideth titled "The Story of GI Joe" When Hasbro was creating the world's first action figure, it was this movie that inspired the name. And here in "GI Joe:The Movie" he stars as Golobulus.
i'd thought of the punishment of CC scene in my head for the last 15 or so years.. but I could never remember anything else of this movie... I got the right scene on my first guess of which part it was in... I don't think i'll ruin the feeling of the old movie by watching it though..lol.

The cool thing is the name GI Joe came from an old movie starring Burgess Merideth titled "The Story of GI Joe" When Hasbro was creating the world's first action figure, it was this movie that inspired the name. And here in "GI Joe:The Movie" he stars as Golobulus.

i'd thought of the punishment of CC scene in my head for the last 15 or so years.. but I could never remember anything else of this movie... I got the right scene on my first guess of which part it was in... I don't think i'll ruin the feeling of the old movie by watching it though..lol.

its the same ACTOR that did STAR SCREAM Voice i believe he died a few years ago they said they would have used him for the transfomers movie but he died..they did get the same voice actor for Optimus Prime for the movie.

I remember this movie and as a kid this killed GIJoe for me. It was sad because it was around the same time that Transformers started all that Quintesson craziness and killed my two favorite shows. Does anyone have the Pyramid of Darkness movie? That was the best!

@Harshcore811 I agree and add Golobulous was the one who failed. We learn that the spore have degenerative properties, so Cobra Commander's mind might been messed up by his first disfiguring dose. I'm assuming Golobulous knew that might be possible and still sent his pet noble man\scientist out. That's how I saw it anyway.

I hated the plot. An ancient race of snake people & bugs never rubbed me the right way. Such a great animation job deserved a great story like Transformers The Movie.
