The reason why Benchmade knives are "overpriced" is because they only use American labor since they discontinued the Red Class. Kershaw, Spyderco, and CRKT all use cheap labor, therefore their knives are cheaper. With Benchmade you pay more, but get what you pay for. Actually invest in one of the 100+ dollar knives, you won't be disappointed. Would you rather have one really awesome knife or two or three knives you don't like that much? My Triage and my Barrage are all I'd ever need in a knife.
@MrKnivesReviewer - I actually got a Benchmade 470 and a 710 after this vid, so I do like them now, or at least the ones I got were very high quality.
Maybe I will change my mind when I have a larger bank account, but any knife over $60 just seems excessive for my needs. I have a Kershaw Leek, which I found in a field and got replaced under warranty, and an HK Ally. Both are pretty good; they could be better though. Best parts of the Ally are the pocket clip and aesthetics. They require some maintenance, but they take my abuse pretty well. I just ordered a CRKT My Tighe for a slightly larger folder. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing.
yup overpriced is right and lacking in quality control on some of the knives they send out.. I bought the story on the benchmade bedlam being the sultans knife and sent for one..lol and boy did i regret ordering that monster that came way off center with lousy lockup.. sent it back to vendor and will never buy another Benchmade.
@WeAllJuggleKnives it was a run of bad knives that got me to stop buying.. i didn't like sending stuff back on my dime and hassling with post office.. man when you pay $160 for a blade it should come with magical powers and near perfect..lol
You definitely have to pick and choose which Benchmades to buy. It wasn't so bad until they raised their prices a year or so ago, and discontinued their Red Class knives. There's still a few models that aren't too bad if you shop around online. I like their classic knives--the Griptilian, 710, 940, etc., as well as some of their more simple designs, ala the Rant. In general, though, they're pricey. Glad I picked up a Griptilian before the price raise, and a Rant on clearance.
Benchmade, Strider and Extrema Ratio are all overpriced knives. They are all high on the cool factor but the entry price (for US made Benchmades) is just too high for me to get on the bandwagon. If I am putting out a ton of money for a working knife it will be a Busse or Zero Tolerance, the warranties make them worth the money alone.
@HighDesertOutpost - yeah those Extrema Ratios are crazy, with the modern art handles and the blunt shaped tips, its like "what up with that" for those prices !
Benchmade, Spyderco, etc. are pricey. Whenever I purchased a $100 plus blade I felt that I shouldn't use it and just keep it at home for looking at and fondling. Recently I changed my thinking... after watching a video from cutlerylover. He has a Chris Reeve Sebenza that he just kept in a safe. Now he changed his mind and carries the Sebenza for EDC. The knife works beautifully and holds its edge really well. The video is titled "TAGGED : Favorite 2 Knives..." on cutlerylover's channel.
Benchmade makes great knives and the Axis lock is one of the best on the market. But with that being said I also feel Benchmade is over priced. When you can get a Spyderco Delica with a 2 7/8 blade perfect for EDC. Or and Endura with a big 3 3/4 inch blade. With VG-10 steel, strong locks, functional jimping and decent handles. They are thin and super light weight and always come razor sharp. And they are a steal at the $50-60 dollar range. Where as most Benchmades are well over $100
@ScotsSens - i tend to agree, i have 4 times as many Spydercos as Benchmades, i like 9 out of 10 spyderco designs. (but i really hate their Rock Lobster knife lol)
i think most spydercos are overpriced also, like a manix2 is a amazing usa made knife for 67 bucks, then u have almost all the japanese made knives same handle materials, but vg10, which is inferior to 154cm, in my opinion, and they are all 130 bucks or more, i would never buy a 200 dollar knife, but i love grips, they are awesome, and the handle is not cheap there tough as balls!
so do you just leave the clips where they come from the factory when the knife goes right to the collection. do you switch any of the clips to the left side for yourself?
@PavlovSandor - I have 2 Hissatsu Folders that I've named Righty and Lefty lol. I switched the clip for leftside carry on one. On most knives I leave the clip how it comes, because I'm lazy. I've even carried knives reversed instead of switching the clip. I have fast hands, I can turn the knife around as I draw it and still have pppplenty of time left over lol
i have one benchmade. hk soldat. made in the us. it was under 50 bucks. its much like the grips but has a manual button lock. i love the tanto on the rant. very good looking. i like the tanto on the axis tanto too. i only wish they made the final edge grind higher. the soldat came sharp but the final edge was very small. so i had it fixed by heiheit. its cool that they are made in usa. when did you pick up the spike auto? back in the day or the reissues? axis lock is too fun!!!
Hey sensei, i agree with most of the benchmade items being overpriced. Do you own any dawson knives? i just traded my old man two ka-bars and an old airforce survival knife for a dawson model 97. Yes he did know how much the knife was worth before we traded :P
hey man, ever considered a current production benchmade balisong, bm51 morpho? i think its over priced, but definitely something worth trying out, great video man, keep it up!!
Never regarded Benchmade as "status". Also, not a big fan of the company. Definitely overpriced. They've always felt a little feeble to me. They're an okay edc tool.
If you don't know about it you can get info here-- watch?v=hZEvA8BCoBw but I am really curious what your thought are on it. I'm sure others are curious too!
Fun vid, Israel. Actually, that H&K tanto is USA made (I have one). As for Benchmade being overpriced, I agree...though not by much. Benchmade absolutely stands behind their products. That's part of the price. The Axis Lock adds money (both for the tech of the lock and the name). Some of it is that Benchmade uses "better" materials. They're US made with very few exceptions. Some of the money pays for more R&D so that they can keep innovating and pushing ahead. Business costs come from many areas
I'm going to have to agree with you. I think Benchmade is a little too proud of their name. I like a lot of their designs though and they are almost always perfect as far as fit and finish.
@WeAllJuggleKnives I've recently found out two cool fixed knives that aren't expensive (too expensive). They look really solid & compact and i would like to know what you think about them!
buck 192Br vanguard
Ka-Bar Becker Bk2 campanion
Buck gen 5 skinner fixed
BOKER & HATTORI (I dont know the exact name of it but its beautiful, expensive though)!!
Thanks for the shout-out. I'll be comapping my mini and large grip soon. I recommened the benchmade 710. It's very good and solid feeling unlike the griptilian
I've had my eye on the H&K for sometime now. Want it in the black and tan color combo though. Having a hard time finding one. Kind of on a tanto blade kick lately too. Nice collection. Thanks for the viddie. cheers. mick
