damn I need to go to a black church sometime, they look like so much more fun! either that or I wish my church would get one of these and a drum set! I'm one of those few white people with a good sense of rhythm!
@peterfarrow Hey, i thought that too but it's not a rectfier tube. It's a oc3 regulator tube and yes, it is suppose to "flicker". It regulates power to those big 6550 tubes
an OC3 is a neon voltage reference that is often used in fixed bias designs and has no heater just glows red due to the neon gas, the excitation voltage of about 60volts that gives the red glow. It still shouldn't modulate in quite that fashion...
Ya nothing kinda matches a Hammond tonewheel (B3 C3, A-100's, RT3) Organ and a tube Leslie Speaker. Even the clones cannot match. I have a Hammond A100 and Leslie 751. And a computer sound sample cannot reproduce that sound
SWEET JESUS that leslie sounds like some gosh-darn angels. If I had one, it wouldn't sound like angels, it would sound like Satan himself. Crossroads BABY!
hammond didnt actually like the leslie speaker because he wanted a pipe organ sound, but i would have to disagree there. the hammond plugged into the leslie is one of the best sounding instruments ever invented.
Fairly remarkable that Leslie never really worked for Hammond but he did convert many organs when Power was converted to 60Hz from 50 way back when in Calif. The tone generator motors would spin at a different speed, so he knew the organ well, then went on to create the Leslie, (Don Leslie) never advertised his speakers!!
Well does your new invention use tubes? And sure leslies aren't that advanced today I'm sure you could build something better but it won't jave that great Leslie sound I doubt it. And leslies are classic they are great 122 and 147 are most popular. Leslies are simple classic machines that can't be beat.
Would some one please help! I'm an inventor of a new bold class of Leslie designs. I'm an inventor seeking contact with top level musicians. A Non Disclosure Agreement will have to be signed to see the concept. My Doppler concept makes the present Leslie designs look like "tinker toys". This concept will have a visually stunning stage presence. Contact Jack Jones, go to Geobat....com for contact info and background info.
A Leslie speaker has a rotating horn. That is what creates the "Hammond Sound". On its own, a Hammond organ produces a sine wave. It would sound very flat, like: aaaaaaaaaaa.
The Leslie gives the sound depth, because the horn rotates. It creates a continuous Doppler Effect. You know, like an ambulance gets near, passes, and drives on, but in a loop, like so: aaaaAAAAaaaaAAAAaaaa....
It can do this with a fast or slow speed, or it can be on brake to create the flat sound, if desired.
@TheNorthernSoulKing The Concorde will never sound like a B3, but -any- Hammond will greatly benefit from a good Leslie, and they will all sound very good. Even old digital clones from the 80's, that have horrible Leslie simulations, will start to sound great through a real one, so I'd definetly give it a try.
@TheNorthernSoulKing For your location? Sorry, I don't know. In the Netherlands, there are still a few teachers, but most people here take keyboard or piano lessons for some time to get to know music theory and the basics on the keys, and then move to the (Hammond) Organ by themselves.
Well, maybe not. That flickering tube is an OC3 which controls the voltage to the big glowing tubes which are 6550's. The harder the organist plays the more the flicker. There is a Leslie ( rv) which has a tube amp in the top horn area that is a reverb amp. Man, that amp flickers like fire due to almost the same principal but it's done with an input bulb. Leslies are cool...Don Leslie died a few years ago on my birthday !! R.I.P. peace
The top horn is spinning too fast on slow speed. Not standard , so maybe it's the player's presonal taste ... but play that organ Man...sounds good !! : )
The song is called " He keeps doing Great Things for me " or something like that...a black Gospel music singer named Lashun Pace Rhodes reccorded it first I think. Hope this helps :)
I may sound like such a n00b, since I'm listening on my PC, I really can't hear the leslie speaker effect. I just don't know how it will, would it sound. I just saw it's hooked up to a live band playing. (the speaker) I saw Wikipedia that Leslie speakers use the doppler effect, and I don't know what it would sound like. Maybe I have to listen to it in person :P
I think you probably can hear it but don't recognise it. The Leslie is what's making the organ sound all wibbly wobbly. Of course most electronic keyboards can make this sound with microchips which may be skewing your view of what a 'real' organ sounds like without a rotary speaker.
The Leslie was developed to emulate the Tremolo effect that was a common feature on most pipe organs. In the case of a pipe organ the tremulant mechanism throttles the wind pressure intermittantly make the pipe go flat then back up to pitch. The leslie accomplished this by the dopler effect. Solid state devices leave something o be desired.
I'm one of the guys who where born a lot after Leslie effekt... I'm no 16 years old... But the Lessly speakers are so beautiful!

Somethings going on with the rectifier tube in the amp, its flashing to the organ sound, might be a problem brewing with the amp in the leslie...
Great sound though! Love it... 100000%

how does the organ player change the rotor speed of the speaker during play? can it be done with buttons on the organ?
only4tsc 1 year ago
@only4tsc The Leslie has a kit to change the speed which is connected directly to the Leslie.

@only4tsc Yes. Buttons, or a flip switch.

Anyone, how much difference in sound is there between Model 122 & Model 16?
ureadmymind 1 year ago
@ureadmymind I don't know if there is much of a difference in sound but the Model 16 doesn't have an upper rotary horn while the 122 does.
