I absolutely love Mary Hopkin , her voice is totallly AMAZING and I try to teach my nieces this track for Christmas , but I have to ask, . WHY the rush ? You have to think of what you are singing DAHLING , but I do know its not your fault as these greedy gobsters are not at all spiritual . Love you Bibi .
I recently bought Mary's "Christmas Songs" EP issued on CD in 2008. This song is on it, but is a slightly different mix. Instrumentally it sounds nearly identical to the original single, with the exception of the lyrics. In the original version she sings "My name is Mary and I'm going to have a baby". In the new mix, those lyrics are replaced with "Lord we pray for every little baby". Oh my goodness! I lost it. I tried to fight back my tears...No use trying. It's simply lovely! Thank you Jesus!
@skinnyblinddude I cried as well when I heard the new version, I was only around 15 years old when I bought the original single. Where have the years gone.
@richpat Yes, well you are about two years older than I. Until a month or so ago, I knew not of this wonderful tune and discovered it here on YouTube. I always buy official new copies of everything I enjoy to support the artist's and music, and to get the best sound. I bought Mary's "Recollections" as well. A Kiwi friend gave me "Those Were The Days" Best Of CD and I have "Postcard" too. "Lord Of Reedy River" composed by Mary and Donovan, and her version of "Inchworm" simply thrill my soul! :)
@skinnyblinddude Hi there, I am the same, we should and must back the artistes.
Did you know there was another release of this, by Mary on the same label RZ in 1973, where the lyric was changed to, "my name is Mary and I've got a little baby"
Thank you very much for uploading this beauty song i had ever been searching.
Absolutely unbelievable voice and performance. How can anyone sing so beautifully and manage to look equally as lovely in appearence and charm. My God.
@gstuart01 Yes God was spectalularly unfair in he way he handed out good looks AND good voices to the Welsh. The compensating handicap is being right next to England.
Yes, IT IS the best time of the year..... And it is so wonderful that so many people from the hole world can have a peaceful time and listen to the "same" music... I wish you a very mery xmas.... Hi from Lene.
It is now on CD via maryhopkindotcom Mary's own label
It was released this week and I received my copy this morning it is wonderful it has "Mary had a baby" plus the original b side "the cherry tree carol" and a new mary Hopkin song "Snowed Under2 plus a little surprise bonus..
Hi Pat. You just saved my day! I've been looking for that song for ages without any succes. Entered the homepage you suggested and voilá - just ordered both CDs. A very Merry Christmas to you.
This is one of the very finest newer X-mas songs released. This is Mary's 2nd version from 1973 (1st version is from 1972) - slightly altered lyrics and tempo/pitch. It's CHRISTMAS! Wonderful! Thanks for posting. Should be played MUCH more often during the season!
Mary is going to release a special Christmas CD it will include this song "Mary Had A Baby" along with the "cherry tree carol" which was the (bside) and a brand new Xmas song written by Mary called "Snowed Under". Also being released this month (November)is a brand new CD of songs recorded during the 1970's and 80's called "Recollections" more details via her website maryhopkindotcom
Hi richpat Many thanks for your comment. it's where the best gift you can give me before christmas, I love all her songs, I have 3 single with Mary had a baby, but it wil be very nice to have this wonderfull song on Cd, many thanks again.
It's so beautiful. This was my birthyear and my mum bought this for me as an infant and played it around Christmas for many years and sang. I remember this song as a child well to 10. Thank you for posting.
Not sure where the comments are going below but a bit of information about Mary's early days. She did listened to Joan Baez, Judy Collins etc And prior to her Apple days, she sang on local TV shows,in clubs and pubs around Wales and was signed to a Record label called "Cambrian" where she had already released her first EP. Apple and "days" gave her international fame, but with a voice like that she would have "made it" anyway.
She is great and has became more beautiful since fell into love, married and have had a child. I think every mother IS beautiful.
I saw Mary at the first raw seat in Expo'70 Osaka-Suita. Some photos in Japan are available somewhere though I don't know where the exact places Mary and her family visited in this tour.
If anyone knows please notify me what places exactly did Mary visited in this Japan Tour.
This is actually the 1972 version, at 2:07 she starts to sing "my name is Mary and i'm going to have a baby..." then in the 1973 version she sings "my name is Mary and i've got a litle baby"
This was recorded after Mary left Apple and was produced by Tony Visconti on the Regal Zonophone Label... Mary did indeed admire Joan Baez but at least she did her own arrangement of this wonderful song
These are available from Amazon "Postcard" "Earth song Ocean song" "the Early recordings" (her welsh language songs) and her new release from last year "Valentine" also available from her own site maryhopkindotcom Is a live recording from 1972 "The royal Festival hall"
thanks, I've only seen one antholgy in the record stores a few yrs back and it was a way overpriced Japanese import. I love her voice and the post card cd, which i meant to say. I love all the foreign lang versions, and turn turn, turn.
And I wasn`t sure what did you meen by the term "overnightstar" ? I`ve been her fan since early 60`s,and still.Did you meen like Dylan/Baez so McCartney/Mary Hopkin?Sorry,if you`ve been missunderstood, english is not my mother tongue.
Baez became an overnight(translates as: instant) international star after she startled the huge audience at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival with her stunning voice and communitive magic as she performed this song as an unknown 19 year old lass. No, Dylan around came after Joan and she largely created his stardom by promoting him the way Paul did Mary.
Wow, the voice of an angel indeed....of course , she is Welsh afterall. Sarah McLaughlin did this song last year on "Wintersong" a lovely CD. I think she and Mary would get on well! Thanks for the memories....
Why use a "board" surely email would be quicker as she is alive and well still recording and releasing music... why post such a silly, stupid comment like that!?
Great song; best Christmas song ever... I used to listen to this song on Radio Miraflores 96.1 in Lima Peru in the seventies but never heard it again til today... thank you

Paul who wanted his own Baez, found amazing Mary who choose this from the Baez repitoire.
This was the song that made Baez an overnight star at the Newport Festival 1959.
