this instrument was created from different generations in the Dominican Republic an was passed and started to make them alot better an sound better as the years go by, back in the very old days of the tambora around the 1930's it used 2 be played with two sticks on each side, until one day a tambora was made 2 be played with the slap of the hand an one stick, the tambora is very well influenced with some of the African drums...

@DerwinRodriguez I saw you posted something directed at me and then erased it. Take a look at two comments that I put about musicians that I know and played with. BTW, my mom is from Gaspar Hernandez and my father is from Rio San Juan close to Nagua. So that thing about "we Dominicans", well, so am I. And when I talk, it's from experience of who I know and played with. I'm retired from percussion and now only play guitar.
@DerwinRodriguez I still get calls to play Tambora, Guira, Congas, and Bongo. As a matter of fact, I was asked to tour for Oro Solido in May, and Play for La Makina a few weeks ago in California. My friend, La Peligosa Tambora, still plays for Maria Diaz when she comes here. I can say way more like I did in other comments, but I'll leave it a that. Take a look at my other comments to read my history. Oh, I forgot, you mention Luis Vargas, I met La Zaeta. And he lives where I'm from now.
@milkman4eva you could brag, u can act like people know you, but i know an im glad 2 kno were the music originated an wat are actual genres and styles,...i could care less if you kno how to play conga guira bongo tamborine but you should know watt the hell is merengue, bachata, & merengue tipico is, and its deffinetly not a style!...
@milkman4eva i probably met way more singers an groups than you have,....an who listens to oro solido now an days?...an if u was playin on dat tour you act like your something huge!, cuz in da end, you will just only be a musician,....
es para mi una persona muy especial,!!!!,como musico mas , ya que es el musico de percucion mas completo radicado en new york,, y conosco su trayectoria,,,, eres un mostro!!!
Hold on a second there. This guy plays orquesta style like Chocolate, Cuchi, Catarey, etc... Tipico is one style and this is another. Tipico is a soloist style, and that's why they do more rolls and show off more. But orquesta players play cleaner. So we can't criticize this guy, cuz he's good.
Cleaner? Dude you cant be serious. And don't compare Catarey and Chocolate to this guy. Catarey was a legend. Tipico tamboreros are just as clean and precise as orquesta tamboreros if not even more clean.
What!? More clean? Tipico tamboras are tuned WAY HIGHER! They're not more clean. And the comparison I make from Catarey and Chocolate to this guy is in style only, not in skill. I have family and friends in both styles. Pablito Espinal, the accordionist of Jose El Calvo, I know his father Chi Chi Espinal.
Also, my friend Luis Guira, played for La India Canela and Yovanny Polanco. As for orquesta, my cousin Jimmy Bauer sang with many groups before he got into singing bachata. Leandro Rodriguez, who played for Toño for 12 years, is my sisters' brother-in-law. My mentor, Maximo Suero, played for Che Che Abreu, Luis Ovalles, Milly Quezada, and La Banda X. I can keep going, but I'll leave it at that. I speak from experience, not speculation.
@milkman4eva ,Your absolutley wrong, the Dominican drum "la Tambora" is made for Merengue and Merengue Tipico, and tipico is no a style!, Merengue Tipico is a genre!, and it is not for soloist style, it is far more important and bigger than what you think it is, and we are too proud, an we protect and continue the traditions an the sharing of our music an culture of one of the Dominican's original genres...

hey martin, i really hope you read this comment. im a huge fan, long live LP.
i own that same tambora, however i think the heads need to be improved to goatskin heads like the ethnic from DR. it sounds good for the stick, but not quite good enough for the slap. very solid though, ive had mines for about 3yrs, and the woodrim is just barely beginning to peal off. if you do upgrade the tambora to goatskin heads, please make sure it stay the same size so that way i can upgrade mine jeje lol!

@AndCache he did variations no ?
cuz from what i understand merengue is a single rhythm no variation , it's the conga that does the variations
