Set-top boxes have failed at least six times. Starting with the Philips CDi, through the Amiga CDTV and various intel varieties. Will this be any different? The answer is no.
Easy to forget these cheaper Box'es now with all the NVidia ION-frenzy, but the N270 Atom isn't bad and as long as you don't have HDTV ambitions these hold up very well. Standard TV and DVD resolution is quite effortless. And for replacing all those old PC boxes...time to let go and bring those to recycling !! This can be a great music centre also and can deliver 5.1 channel digital audio for movies.
hey is this computer the same way as a regular pc, i mean like the setup, the start button with all the programs? can you download lets say for example limewire or AIM?
haha that mounting bracket thing for it to go behind monitor is just to make it more like a Mac. Dont get me wrong, i despise Macs, nevertheless, smart :)
I love my EEEbox. It's perfect to browsing and email. I don't feel like I need to keep my main system running 24/7 for my email alerts, random browsing, etc. This thing is very quiet and boots fast, plus it has Splashtop in the BIOS if you just want to use Firefox without booting into Windows/Linux.
There's going to be new models called B204 and B206. They will have Radeon HD3400-series GPUs in them, and a remote control. They're supposed to be for media playback (HD content) roles.
That little PC is pointless. You might as well, for the same price, get an actual EeePC, leave the lid closed. Same thing. It's an eeepc without a screen for the same price.
Well the eeepc doesn't run while the lid is closed. You can't make them run reliably with the lid closed.
Also EeeBox has DVI output unlike the EeePC. And it has 2.5" SATA hdd bay, unlike the EeePC.
It also mounts behind your monitor getting it off your desk, while your closed eeepc idea would mean you'd have to sort of stick a closed laptop on your desk somewhere with cables coming out of both sides(power, usb and vga are on different sides with that laptop), yuck.
The Eeepc runs perfectly fine with the lid closed. They run just as reliable as anything. You can configure what it should do with the lid closed. I've had mine set to just keep running, but it's possible that the default tells it to hibernate. You control this. Fully reliable.
DVI output - that is indeed a difference which could indeed be an issue.
As for esthetics, not a big deal.
I still I'd be paying for a netbook without a screen for the full netbook price.
I just tried my eee 701 and I can't get it to do anything but suspend to disk or standby when I close the lid. Perhaps something is old/wrong in my OS or BIOS.
DVI+2.5" harddrive is what makes it different than netbooks. But look at Apple, the Mac Mini is a Macbook without a screen and they charge a small fortune for the thing.
My eee 701 came with Xandros Linux. When you right click the button in the corner you can get to the options, where you can configure what it should do when you close the lid. I set mine to keep running but with the screen off to save power.
I also disabled any hibernate after idle times.
eee 701 is just one netbook. There are plenty of other netbooks, that are cheap and also come with a harddrive.
The only advantage that I see is a dvi out, but for video this thing is too slow anyway.
i bet with some hardware and software mods you could turn it into a mini ps2 or wii, maybe even a ps3 but then it would be double the size with the blu ray laser diode.
I bet the performance is good enough to run GameCube and Playstation2 emulators on it. Load up the harddrive with your games, then you don't need an optical drive.
I hear it has BlueTooth, is this true? If so it would work well with the PS3 and Wiimotes!
I read on Mike Rivero's WhatReallyHappened(.)com that the 80GB WinXP version comes with a virus called Recycled.exe which will infect your hard drive and any connected removable drives when the D: partition is accessed. Best thing to do for that particular model is completely wipe the hard drive and install another OS.
Laptops don't usually run very well while closed. Usually there are problems with heat with many laptop models when operating while closed. Plus you can VESA mount it onto your monitor.
haha, mount it to your monitor, almost like the computer is built into the monitor!!! Wow, thats like futuristic...I would if any other company has though of that idea. cough (apple) cough :)
This seems like a cool little computer, but like it's netbook counterpart, seems a little overpriced for my taste. If they bought it down a bit, it would be a lot more interesting.
I agree. It should be cheaper in order to offer a new concept. In this way you could make computing pervasive as for instance advertising on stores, the lobby of an enterprise, conference room occupation displays, make smart TV's, Internet TV, DVR, kitchen computer, call centers, point of sale etc. I've seen motherboards with integrated processor for USD $80 without the convenience of the size. A USA$170 - USA$230 with a small solid state disk and Linux wouldn't be bad.
That side unit with the dvi and spdif and wifi- is AWSOME and i dont kno why more netbooks come with those. I mean that thing has built in sound as well- saves alot of room in the actuall chassis.
its th weee

There are plenty of netbooks also with a harddrive and a gig of ram, pretty much for the same price as this thing.
It's a netbook without a screen for the same price. How stupid does one have to be to fall for that?

Just because you don't want one doesn't make everyone else stupid!

Is there a way to load cd's?
warhawk4ever 2 years ago
What type of cd's?
You can transfer cd's to a usb key, and plug that in to it....
You can even make bootable usb keys which you can use to install different OS's.
a1mint 2 years ago
Would the dell monitors be able to support this, since they have a plate that connect's to the back of it.
