It was next to impossible to play live music to big audiences in the 1960s.

They didn't have the sound quality, and monitors weren't even invented, so they had no way to hear themselves over the crowd.

Even bands like the Rolling Stones, at the height of their fame, only played in theatres, and 1'000 seat venues in the 1960s.

The Beatles were the only stadium band, and it was disasterous, so they gave up touring

They were an incredible live band. They had played so much together and accorded rehearsal the kind of importance it warrants. They knew each others' moves and vocal peculiarities. George and John supported each other in their guitar playing while Paul was busy setting new standards for electric bass.

Let's set the record straight. There are very few live Beatle performances recorded and the ones that were recorded were recorded in the worst possible ways. There was so much mass hysteria that the quality, even with today's technology, was horrible. They seldom had monitors so they could NOT hear themselves. Most of the time they played through a sound system set up for baseball games. As they say, live performances changed drastically 20 minutes after the Beatles stopped touring.

@sacramentolove Yes, but as you can hear, the quality is still not as good as it could have been, and for the record, no fault of the Beatles. The Beatles were not at fault for this problem. It was simply the live recording industry, was not up to date with making quality live recording equipment for large venues such as Shea Stadium. I just want to make sure that it doesn't sound like I am knocking the best band in the world. Lack of live sound quality is one reason they stopped touring.

@maximum1954 yeah, they only lip sync'd in music videos. in tv shows like "david frost" or "ed sullivan" they didnt lyp sync, because in a music video, the camera has to pause to go to other views. watch some music videos of them, like "hello goodbye" in there you'll see that paul has messed up a lyric, when they were singing the part "why, why, why, why, why, why do you say goodbye, goodbye, BYE, BYE, BYE, BYE... on that part, you'll see paul messing up on lyp syncing it xD

@Kaiser325 In the song Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Paul sings, "Desmond(male) stays at home and does his pretty face and in the evening she's a singer with the band". It wasn't discovered till the the final mix. After discussing the mistake, for the fun of it, they decided to not change it.
