He's also Sunni, unlike the majority of modern day Persians, who after the Shi'ite Safavid Empire, ended up as Shi'ites. He's actually an extremely conservative Muslim, that borders on being a Wahabi. I disagree with his views, but respect his work. He actually wrote an entire "Tafsir" about the Quran, which he memorized at age 10.
