love aaron tveit but HATE vanessa. who cast this? im sorry but rent and high school musical just do not go together. she may be trying to "mature" with her work but i just cant make that transition with her. rent has been my favorite musical for over 7 years and nothing can ever change that but she makes me cringe.

@skb1355264 she does well ..he does ok ..he needs to have more emotion in the song ..she could use some too ...OBC no one can compare ..they lived the lives of these people and so it just came out ...so everyone needs to stop expecting OCB quality performances from everyone ..they can be good just not great

Vanessa Hudgens explained to me with her rent performances exactly how music studios are able to make people sound so good despite the fact that they may sound so bad live. She sounds just fine when the music is soft and she can hear herself. In songs like out tonight when things get revved up and loud she quickly gets very lost and is all over the place. The poor thing, I thought she was gonna do great in this role. But it is nice to hear her sounding good here....

@neshannockfez Mimi is supposed to be a strung out junkie who her rage out on her body via drugs and what not. She's as raw as a character gets on broadway. Vanessa is frankly too inexperienced to play this part. And I'm not saying this in a hatter manner. I don't hate her at all. In fact in the long run I root for her. But this part was wrong for her. It seems like she didn't do a lot of preperation for it. I will give her bravery points. That she deserves in spades.

@TheEgotasticRipoff I think I see what you mean, although I always pegged Mimi to be more of a self delusioned escapism obsessed junky who became unable to free herself from her own addictions, rather than a self hating addict without means to cope. More of a fallen Miley Cirus, and less of a smitten Avril Lavrigne.

I guess different people see different sides to themselves in her own character, because when it comes to my version, she plays it very well

I agree. I think she showed significant improvement on the 8th. And as far as this song goes, I think it suits her voice. it's her best song. However for a production like Rent, you gotta be more than a ballad singer.

But this wasn't so bad and she did improve. I think if it was on longer, and she had more training, she would done pretty well.

These recordings dont do much justice to their voices. Nessa did great! Sometimes she did go a lil' "whiney" but when she hit it, she REALLY HIT it & made it beautiful. Without You was a great perf. her voice hasnt been trained for the ROCK vibe of RENT though. It still growing but she really carried thru! Esp. Out Tonight, they added A LOT of movement, which made it more difficult, unlike the BWAY where she stays in a couple areas. Great to see her growing as a performer =]

@Ineeee i wish vanessa had gotten more training before she took on this role. she would never have been cast for an ongoing broadway production. but if she was, she would have to go through intensive training coz that voice of hers isnt trained at all. still love her though =)

@gezbez I agree. However I have to admit that this one wasn't AS terrible as lets say Light My Candle or Out Tonight. The ballads I could actually stomach. And I say this with a heavy heart because I want her to succeed. I really do.

Well hopefully she can take this as an education and learn from it and what you gotta do.

@gezbez I think she lacks confidence at times. Like, she wasn't sure, cause of the little rehearsal they had. When she lets go and doesn't hold back her air she sounds really good. it's when she doubts that it doesn't sound god.
