He might have been as crazy as it gets, but I wish we could have more of these crazy tenors with this kind of excitment and ability to nail these kinds of arias these days. He had high notes (high "Cs" include) to spare and to thrill audiences.
Why mad? He loves what he is doing. Everybody who brings Di Quella Pira to a good end is a hero to me, and he is one of them. Opera in the best tradition: both for the elite and for the crowd, like it was in those days

@bodiloto Inoltre in questo 21 secolo è in arrivo un giovanissimo Tenore, con una grande e bella voce. Ha colorato una serata d'estate a Monzambano affiancando 2 Grandi Tenori come Piero Giuliacci e Roberto Aronica. Io sono stata partecipe di quella serata magnifica, e vi assicuro che per me è stata una grande emozione sentirlo esibire insieme a due Grandi Voci. Presto anche lui sarà tra la lista dei Grandi memorabili.

@bodiloto Rendiamo veramente omaggio a tutti i Grandi Tenori citati prima da @31122051. Nel nostro 21 Secolo Abbiamo un Tenore con la T maiuscola che si chiama Piero Giuliacci. L'ho sentito nel Teatro di Lecce nella prima recita del 18 Febbraio 2011 in cui ha emesso i due Do della pira con tanto di Bis. Ha cantato anche Sabato 19 emettendo nuovamente i due Do, canterà anche questa sera e canterà molto probabilmente Martedì 22 Febbraio. I veri Tenori esistono ancora, lui è semplicemente divino.

lo so che la vita è bella...e non odio Bonisolli (non ho lo stesso rapporto conflittuale con il mondo come hai tu), semplicemente considero Bonisolli un buon tenore fino a metà anni 70, con una bella voce e anche buona tecnica di base.
Però, ha speso molto in termini di forza fisica e tensione, cosa che poi ha pagato anche con la salute ....purtroppo per lui.
Come posso essere invidioso di Bonisolli se non faccio il cantante...sei proprio strano....tesoro.

Sai, nella vita ho avuto grandi gioie ( tra cui l'aver conosciuto BONISOLLI ) e anche grandi dispiaceri ( un po' come tutti del resto ). A volte mi sveglio depresso o in ansia, e allora cosa faccio ? A quest'uomo, per tutto il bene che ha fatto per la lirica, andrebbe come minimo dedicata una festività durante l'anno. Certe invettive che leggo qui contro questo tenore FAVOLOSO, mi riempiono di tristezza. Andate ad ascoltare Di Stefano, sempre rigorosamente INGOLATO, o il BARITONO Bergonzi, che in tutta la sua carriera non è mai riuscito a emettere un solo acuto decente ; l'arte del MAESTRO BONISOLLI la può comprendere a fondo soltanto chi ha BUON GUSTO. Viva Franco Bonisolli ,mio padre ha cantato con Bonisolli ( Angelo Romero Baritono ) e mi ha sempre detto che aveva una voce portentosa.
E' ridicolo il modo in cui gonfia la voce, insopportabile l'esibizionismo con cui ostenta due acuti peraltro privi di squillo autentico senza minimamente preoccuparsi di esprimere qualcosa in ciò che canta (sempre che di canto possa parlarsi). Povero Verdi!!! L'unica attrattiva di questo video è il simpatico siparietto con il direttore, dove Bonisolli ancora una volta dimostra di essere solo un fenomeno da baraccone, erede grottesco e decadente del malcanto delmonachiano anni cinquanta.

He's old and worn out from singing high notes wherever he goes. It's not just something people say, Bonisolli actually went slightly crazy during his latter years.
If you want to hear Bonisolli when he was young and suprisingly lyrical, find out his early (68 I think) recording of La Traviata.

He was an incredible voice, I guess that he was one of the best dramatic tenors after Del Monaco&Corelli retired, especially as Manrico of course. Anyway this video, haha, funniest tenor clip I've ever seen, I wish I was there- Unbelievable voice, conductor who wasnt obeyed, and Bonisollis pranks in the end, perfect.
Here is why Corelli's voice eventually went to hell. His beast of a wife told him he sounded like a Baritone. She made him study with G Lauri Volpi in '65, where we hear him trying to "brighten" his sound instead of keeping it dark. Compare videos of him singing in the 1950's to videos in the 70's. It's almost night and day in some of them. In the 70's however he couldn't get by with GLV tech, so he reverted back to his original Melocchi tech. But integrating the GLV tech led to his decline.
Bonisolli has always been my absolute favourite in this particular aria but what he pulls off here defies the believable. Astounding. No other word. It made me cry.
you're right....the one who sayd that corelli had no technique is silly.I think Corelli had ONLY a perfect technique....the problem with him is that he never had a good phrasing,never a good accentuation of words and never a good diction.
Agreed, Corelli had the ultimate power notes. Open-ended vowls he could nail quite strongly. A dramatic tenor indeed. However, sometimes, he sounded like shit to me, like he's not even in key...lazy could be the word I'm looking for, only Corelli will ever know.
What a showman! And what's wrong with the conductor? This is a concert and the audience wanted more, don't argue with the star, let him sing an encore. Apparently Franco made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Etna-I love Bonisolli for the entertainment factor. We need more Bonisolli's today. Note that his reckless tossing of top notes also resulted in lots of embarrassing cracks under even more embarrassing circumstances but people loved him for his eccentric personality, including myself. For as long as one keeps Bonisolli in context, he serves a purpose. Corelli's artistic skills overall were more developed than Bonisolli. Boni was more of an operatic athlete of utmost repute.
As i watch this incredible performance again i find myself wondering would Franco Corelli perhaps the Greatest Of All Operatic Tenors would he have attempted what Bonisolli did ? sing 'Di Quella Pira" Back to back 6 High C's in all. I just wonder.. he probably could have done it but i don't think he was crazy enough to actually try to do it. You have to give Bonisolli due credit he had the balls of a bull elephant and the voice of a roaring Lion, he pulled it off, just amazing.

I do agree with floridas24, even I admire Corelli and had a superb vocal capacity as Del Monaco.Corellis vocal technique was not in fact good, you can notice that when he was in his 50´s already, but anyway one ot the great tenors Corelli, Bonisolli, Del Monaco, Kraus, Joerling....., all different but magnificent singing.By the way Joerling , Kraus, great technique.
Interesting. Could you say why Kraus's technique is terrible? While Ia m no Kraus fan, I happen to think he had a good technique, but my knowledge of it is incomplete (I do know he gave great importance to disphragatic support and to vocalization with the letter i, to which I guess I have little to object).

LucianoKraCore, actually, Corelli's technique up to 1960, was virtually flawless. He lost his voice in his 50's because of picking up bad habits later on. When you first passed your driving test, your driving was exemplary. But you've unconsciously picked up bad habits since that makes mishaps more likely. It's no different with singing, particularly amongst the bigger voices. When you get in the habit of singing on your capital instead of your interest, the technique begins to unravel.
to say Correlli was constantly flawed is the thoughts of a fool. The biggest problem for Correlli was he had the nerves of the damned. He could vomit with nerves prior to performing. I consider he had a gift from the Gods that I was lucky enough to share.

I said that up to 1960 his technique was virtually flawless. His voice was still fantastic up to the mid 60's. But he did acquire bad vocal habits, (most singers do) & it was the consequence of that from which came the vocal difficulties & unreliability of the voice which caused his nerves, - NOT the other way around. His nerves came later.

Scusami ma non è corretto ciò che dici, colgo in pieno il tuo entusiasmo nel sentire queste GRANDI voci, ma ti ricordo che un GRANDE maestro come PAvarotti è riuscito negli anni, con tecnica sopraffina, a interpretare ruoli come Radames, e tanti altri così impervi. Ciò che stupisce è che Pavarotti nacque come tenore lirico leggero, ma con la tecnica corretta, negli anni la sua voce ha maturato naturalmente e acquisendo volume, adesso se non ci sono più le voci di una volta, è per 1altro motivo

Pochi anni prima di morire aveva ancora il " do " perfettamente intatto e ha saputo spaziare con assoluta disinvoltura dal lirico-leggero all'eroico-drammatico come pochi, a lei questo pare poco ? This is AMAZING! Sure enough, stylistically he wasn't top-notch, but what "squillo" and energy he had! Listen to those ringing top notes, and what a commanding stage presence! I've seen him many times live (in the US and Europe): he was a very handsome, if at times, unpredictable tenor, but so thrilling! He was a devoted sportsman (cycling.) At Verona, around Pzza Brá, in the 80s, he accidentally almost squashed my left feet (and profusely apologized for the incident!) Grazie, Franco, R.I.P.
Franco never got the recognition he deserved it was the other Franco who got all the praises but Bonisolli was 2nd to none.What other Tenor past or present did back to back encores of this most difficult Aria? Bonisolli ha avuto degli inizi promettenti, non lo metto in dubbio, ma ha passato più della metà della carriera nei teatri di provincia tedeschi, dove il pubblico, non distingue un tenore che canta da un cane che abbaia. Questo non puoi negarlo.

Ha colorato una serata d'estate a Monzambano affiancando 2 Grandi Tenori come Piero Giuliacci e Roberto Aronica. Io sono stata partecipe di quella serata magnifica, e vi assicuro che per me è stata una grande emozione sentirlo esibire insieme a due Grandi Voci. Presto anche lui sarà tra la lista dei Grandi memorabili.

@bodiloto Rendiamo veramente omaggio a tutti i Grandi Tenori citati prima da @31122051. Nel nostro 21 Secolo Abbiamo un Tenore con la T maiuscola che si chiama Piero Giuliacci. L'ho sentito nel Teatro di Lecce nella prima recita del 18 Febbraio 2011 in cui ha emesso i due Do della pira con tanto di Bis. Ha cantato anche Sabato 19 emettendo nuovamente i due Do, canterà anche questa sera e canterà molto probabilmente Martedì 22 Febbraio. I veri Tenori esistono ancora, lui è semplicemente divino.

lo so che la vita è bella...e non odio Bonisolli (non ho lo stesso rapporto conflittuale con il mondo come hai tu), semplicemente considero Bonisolli un buon tenore fino a metà anni 70, con una bella voce e anche buona tecnica di base.
Però, ha speso molto in termini di forza fisica e tensione, cosa che poi ha pagato anche con la salute ....purtroppo per lui.
Come posso essere invidioso di Bonisolli se non faccio il cantante...sei proprio strano....tesoro.

@mongemark : non importa quanti anni io abbia, la voce di BONISOLLI mi mantiene e mi manterrà eternamente giovane. Sai, nella vita ho avuto grandi gioie ( tra cui l'aver conosciuto BONISOLLI ) e anche grandi dispiaceri ( un po' come tutti del resto ). A volte mi sveglio depresso o in ansia, e allora cosa faccio ? Ascolto BONISOLLI, GIACOMINI, NIKOLOV [ ... ] e la depressione mi passa subito, divento euforico e spensierato ( a volte fino all'eccesso ). Tanti carissimi saluti !

A quest'uomo, per tutto il bene che ha fatto per la lirica, andrebbe come minimo dedicata una festività durante l'anno. Certe invettive che leggo qui contro questo tenore FAVOLOSO, mi riempiono di tristezza. Andate ad ascoltare Di Stefano, sempre rigorosamente INGOLATO, o il BARITONO Bergonzi, che in tutta la sua carriera non è mai riuscito a emettere un solo acuto decente ; l'arte del MAESTRO BONISOLLI la può comprendere a fondo soltanto chi ha BUON GUSTO. E' ridicolo il modo in cui gonfia la voce, insopportabile l'esibizionismo con cui ostenta due acuti peraltro privi di squillo autentico senza minimamente preoccuparsi di esprimere qualcosa in ciò che canta (sempre che di canto possa parlarsi). Povero Verdi!!! L'unica attrattiva di questo video è il simpatico siparietto con il direttore, dove Bonisolli ancora una volta dimostra di essere solo un fenomeno da baraccone, erede grottesco e decadente del malcanto delmonachiano anni cinquanta.

He's old and worn out from singing high notes wherever he goes. It's not just something people say, Bonisolli actually went slightly crazy during his latter years.
If you want to hear Bonisolli when he was young and suprisingly lyrical, find out his early (68 I think) recording of La Traviata.

Cuando un cantane ,un director,una orquesta y el publico pueden establecer un proceso sinergico de esta naturaleza,no hay locura de por medio,puede haber cierta excentricidad propia de una estrella,pero si puede afirmarse que hay emocion y por ende compenetracion.
Es lo que antes deciamos de que el cantante se echaba al publico: " al bolsillo" ,lo cual es un proceso psicologico que no es propio unicamente de los cantantes populares,cuyas voces son amplificadas y artificiales.

a true maestro! a magnificient jump! He is great! There are a lot of good mediocre conductors but very few great tenors! In my opinion the conductor is wrong in making Bonisolly sing again! The conductor is a self-conceited fool!

Mamma mia... il timbro è interessante ma Bonisolli non ha capito che il cantante è anche un musicista... l'Opera non è fatta solo di interpretazione. E poi tutte le appoggiature portamentose ad ogni acuto non sono un gran che.

Very impressive, excellent, but nowhere close to Corelli, nothing to say about Del Monaco!
Of course, Bonisolli's voice was very strong and ringing, but these goods had Del Monaco and Corelli too, but their voices were much sweeter and pleasant, especially the one of Del Monaco!

Haha, I couldnt stop laughing, we need some new Bonisolli nowadays. Poor conductor, haha, Franco totally "punked" him, haha. He was an incredible voice, I guess that he was one of the best dramatic tenors after Del Monaco&Corelli retired, especially as Manrico of course. Anyway this video, haha, funniest tenor clip I've ever seen, I wish I was there- Unbelievable voice, conductor who wasnt obeyed, and Bonisollis pranks in the end, perfect.

Here is why Corelli's voice eventually went to hell. His beast of a wife told him he sounded like a Baritone. She made him study with G Lauri Volpi in '65, where we hear him trying to "brighten" his sound instead of keeping it dark. Compare videos of him singing in the 1950's to videos in the 70's. It's almost night and day in some of them. In the 70's however he couldn't get by with GLV tech, so he reverted back to his original Melocchi tech. But integrating the GLV tech led to his decline.

Bonisolli has always been my absolute favourite in this particular aria but what he pulls off here defies the believable. Astounding. No other word. It made me cry.

you're right....the one who sayd that corelli had no technique is silly.I think Corelli had ONLY a perfect technique....the problem with him is that he never had a good phrasing,never a good accentuation of words and never a good diction.

Agreed, Corelli had the ultimate power notes. Open-ended vowls he could nail quite strongly. A dramatic tenor indeed. However, sometimes, he sounded like shit to me, like he's not even in key...lazy could be the word I'm looking for, only Corelli will ever know.

What a showman! And what's wrong with the conductor? This is a concert and the audience wanted more, don't argue with the star, let him sing an encore. Apparently Franco made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

his reckless high notes didnt hurt him as much as his broadening the middle notes, he adds weight to the voice as if he is a dramatic tenor, which he isn't.

Etna-I love Bonisolli for the entertainment factor. We need more Bonisolli's today. Note that his reckless tossing of top notes also resulted in lots of embarrassing cracks under even more embarrassing circumstances but people loved him for his eccentric personality, including myself. For as long as one keeps Bonisolli in context, he serves a purpose. Corelli's artistic skills overall were more developed than Bonisolli. Boni was more of an operatic athlete of utmost repute.

As i watch this incredible performance again i find myself wondering would Franco Corelli perhaps the Greatest Of All Operatic Tenors would he have attempted what Bonisolli did ? sing 'Di Quella Pira" Back to back 6 High C's in all. I just wonder.. he probably could have done it but i don't think he was crazy enough to actually try to do it. You have to give Bonisolli due credit he had the balls of a bull elephant and the voice of a roaring Lion, he pulled it off, just amazing.

my friend, what scale you use to say , the greatest of all, publicity, appearances, making money, recordings, fans, houses, counted people who liked him, where and how?, breaking any kind of records, using an special device to measure and say ¨the best¨??.All tenors are different, they should sing the same operas, but different, I wouldn´t say the best..Corelli´s voice was great and beautiful, his singing technique not very good though.

Corelli's technique not good? I hate people like you who believe everything they hear rather than actually learning about vocal technique. I suppose you think Corelli "pushed too much" or "lowered his larynx". I hear this crap every day; it's people like you that have lead us to the shell of what opera used to be, when singers like Corelli and DelMonaco were vaunted for their seamlessly impeccable vocal technique. Go educate yourself, rather than spewing this crap and insulting this great art.

I do agree with floridas24, even I admire Corelli and had a superb vocal capacity as Del Monaco.Corellis vocal technique was not in fact good, you can notice that when he was in his 50´s already, but anyway one ot the great tenors Corelli, Bonisolli, Del Monaco, Kraus, Joerling....., all different but magnificent singing.By the way Joerling , Kraus, great technique.

First off, not to sound like a jerk; It's Bjoerling, not Joerling. Anywho, I've decided to make fair arguments on youtube about opera so:
A) I am wondering where you're getting your information about Corelli's technique and would like you to explain why he didn't have good technique.
B) I love all of the singers you love! and YES Bjoerling had wonderful technique.
C) This is where I'm tipping the scale, I don't care for Kraus:-( Sorry, I think his technique is terrible and his voice is ugly:-(

Interesting. Could you say why Kraus's technique is terrible? While Ia m no Kraus fan, I happen to think he had a good technique, but my knowledge of it is incomplete (I do know he gave great importance to disphragatic support and to vocalization with the letter i, to which I guess I have little to object).

My friend, you are so confused.Corelli was also confused with his singing, main reason when he got old, he couln´t place his notes correctly and sounded tired and out of breath.You too are a jerk?? ANYWHO or Anyhow?, We all make mistakes my friend, be more open minded and think twice..Kraus had an almost perfect technique, you and me don´t say that, his long lasting and healthy voice till the end, showed that all time.Joerling , sorry Bjoerling was also great, pure sounds.

LucianoKraCore, actually, Corelli's technique up to 1960, was virtually flawless. He lost his voice in his 50's because of picking up bad habits later on. When you first passed your driving test, your driving was exemplary. But you've unconsciously picked up bad habits since that makes mishaps more likely. It's no different with singing, particularly amongst the bigger voices. When you get in the habit of singing on your capital instead of your interest, the technique begins to unravel.

to say Correlli was constantly flawed is the thoughts of a fool. The biggest problem for Correlli was he had the nerves of the damned. He could vomit with nerves prior to performing. I consider he had a gift from the Gods that I was lucky enough to share.

dk07dot, Sir, is it possible that you've replied to the wrong message? Or did you simply mis-read mine? I didn't say that Corelli was constantly flawed. I said that up to 1960 his technique was virtually flawless. His voice was still fantastic up to the mid 60's. But he did acquire bad vocal habits, (most singers do) & it was the consequence of that from which came the vocal difficulties & unreliability of the voice which caused his nerves, - NOT the other way around. His nerves came later.

vogliamo ancora queste voci e questi cantanti!!! eccheccazzo qui sembriamo tutti bravi scolaretti alla scuola di buone maniere!!!! Sarà anche un modo di cantare poco raffinato, ma che grinta, che suono, che tenuta! Ci credo che il pubblico di adesso non riesce più a infiammarsi come una volta! Adesso all'opera si dorme, ascoltando Calaffini che potrebbero fare al massimo Nemorino e Aide a cui si potrebbe cambiare il titolo in: CORRAIDE!!!! chi ha orecchie...

Scusami ma non è corretto ciò che dici, colgo in pieno il tuo entusiasmo nel sentire queste GRANDI voci, ma ti ricordo che un GRANDE maestro come PAvarotti è riuscito negli anni, con tecnica sopraffina, a interpretare ruoli come Radames, e tanti altri così impervi. Ciò che stupisce è che Pavarotti nacque come tenore lirico leggero, ma con la tecnica corretta, negli anni la sua voce ha maturato naturalmente e acquisendo volume, adesso se non ci sono più le voci di una volta, è per 1altro motivo

@Turee85 : la prego, non dica sciocchezze, questo era uno dei più grandi tenori di sempre. Ho ascoltato tutte le registrazioni possibili immaginabili da lui effettuate ed era sempre FENOMENALE. Pochi anni prima di morire aveva ancora il " do " perfettamente intatto e ha saputo spaziare con assoluta disinvoltura dal lirico-leggero all'eroico-drammatico come pochi, a lei questo pare poco ? Viva il DIVINO Bonisolli, tenore EROICO dalle STRAORDINARIE doti vocali e dalla GRANDE tecnica. Saluti.

This is AMAZING! Sure enough, stylistically he wasn't top-notch, but what "squillo" and energy he had! Listen to those ringing top notes, and what a commanding stage presence! I've seen him many times live (in the US and Europe): he was a very handsome, if at times, unpredictable tenor, but so thrilling! He was a devoted sportsman (cycling.) At Verona, around Pzza Brá, in the 80s, he accidentally almost squashed my left feet (and profusely apologized for the incident!) Grazie, Franco, R.I.P.

Franco never got the recognition he deserved it was the other Franco who got all the praises but Bonisolli was 2nd to none.What other Tenor past or present did back to back encores of this most difficult Aria? None. No tenor would dare try it but Franco had the balls and the voice to do it. Bravissimo Franco BONISOLLI

Perchè non scrivi di quello invece di dire stronzate su di un artista che Karayan definì il Manrico per eccellenza tanto da volerlo nell'incisione con Cappuccilli e la Price a Vienna? Bonisolli ha avuto degli inizi promettenti, non lo metto in dubbio, ma ha passato più della metà della carriera nei teatri di provincia tedeschi, dove il pubblico, non distingue un tenore che canta da un cane che abbaia. Questo non puoi negarlo.
