I really don't see why turning it back on and over-heating one chip is going to fix it. As far as my electronic classes had taught me, that's how you break them, other than taking a hammer to them. I think that applying the thermal compound first and then testing it would have made sense.

I know this video is old but the comments are stupid.

1. It's not "glue" it's thermal compound

2. RROD (3 red lights) is caused by overheating

3. You need to clean the CPU because the thermal paste is shit on the xbox

4. They were getting 2 red lights because they didn't have the video cable plugged in but they could have let it run because it will still reflow the motherboard as long as the xbox is running.

5. You reflow to fix the solder joints

6. Most people use too much thermal compound.

I think that the "glue" is actually thermal grease. it is suposed to be on both the heat sync and the CPU. Thermal grease helps the heat sync keep the processor cooled. removing it would make everything worse. i think that red rings is a problem with the motherboard

i remember i bought a used 360 for just 30 bucks only a year after it came out cuz the dude said the cd rom drive was jammed. first thing i did was look online how to take it apart and i found out there was a band missing that connected one of the gears together so i replaced it with one of those tiny hair rubber bands and it still works to this day

The gunk on the heatsink is called thermal paste. To get rid of it you just use thermal paste remover (or rub it off well enough). BUT, if you can do this, you should probably go build a decent computer and save the money from having both a console and a pc.
