@marfuckingio I feel like the whole racism thing is a modern phenomena. the beastie boys were one of the first MC groups on the scene after sugar hill and bam. DJing started in BK, but a ton of the pioneering was done in the san francisco bay area by all races from black to white to asian.. If you watch all the old hip hop movies (beatstreet, krush groove, etc), it's all about bringing the races together.

pretty regrettable that race has become such a dividing factor in hip hop.... =\ oh well.

@samsf90 Beastie Boys had the advantage of #1: getting signed to Def Jam (biggest label at the time) and #2: kind of a crossover rock/rap sound. "She's on it" was getting play on rock stations before they were even really thought of as rap, so they had a lot of exposure, also they toured with Run DMC so they got hip hop exposure. Most rap at the time was underground. There were hundreds out there, but very few, black or otherwise who made it big.

@samsf90 around the time the beasties were really blowing up and the white kids were getting into hip hop, I had a lot of rock heads telling me I shouldn't be listening to this n***** music (LOL, I know). I think that if there was no crossover stuff like run dmc and aerosmith doing "walk this way" and anthrax and public enemy doing "bring tha noize" many people would have just seen rap as just a black thing and ignored it. it took a while for the suburbs/small towns to recognize.

@samsf90 In coincidence, Beastie Boys used to be a punk band, when punk was considered a new style of music (and their material was so cool they paved way for other HC punk bands) and sometimes just visited the Harlem area to see what else people were doing. And yes, some black people preferred the punk music.

Skin color doesn't determ what you like, it's your brain. Wheter it's nodding on to some grooves or banging to hard riffs, you know what feels good.
