I don't know about you guys but I think life should be a life of self denial. I'm not going to condemn anything but thank to the grace of God and John Piper sermons which I watch/listen daily I've been able to clean out a lot of trash out of my life. It does produce frustration sometimes but I've also learned that my earthly nature is one that screams for everything but the Gospel. It has to be put to death day by day. Indulging in movies, vid games doesn't feel like self denial to me.
@TxTechAirRAID This isn't even an item that's up for debate. Serious scholars reject the idea; only the "conventional internet wisdom" makes this claim today, in ignorance of scholarship.
@TxTechAirRAID How many lies have you told in your life? Have you ever stolen something? Have you had sex outside of marriage? Have you blasphemed God's name (oh my G--)? No wonder you don't want to believe in God, because you are in big trouble on judgement day.
you people suck. do you REALLY believe this crap you've been fed since you were 3? Do some research on your own religion, which I've clearly done more on... Your entire religion is a blatant ripoff of previous ones before, hold it.. brace yourselves... 0 A.D. lololol
@TxTechAirRAID 'Research'. Lol. Yeah, cause you've sure done a lot of it O.O You do realise that doesnt respectfully count as whatever bs you pull off some biased site you find on google, right?
While your'e there you should look up the term 'ad homenim' -__-
That's not the ONLY way dechurched happens. As someone who has absolutely no intention of ever returning to a church I'll tell you that I quickly became "dechurched" when I overheard ministry leaders cracking jokes about 30 year old virgins within in the church. I was dechurhced when I studied what the publisher, not the preacher, claims about the bible. I became dechurched when my questions were answered with insults and hostility.
@gsschoenfeld I am very hurt that you have experienced this whithin the church community. And you're absolutely right. The church can be full of hostile, two faced, ruthless, and judgmental people. My hope, and my prayer, is that you look past those people and look to God, because he is the focus not us ourselves. If there is one thing that we can wrong in America, and it's crucial, it is this: God is the focus, we are not, and he is the only one worthy of praise and honor.
@RideCakeEatDirt I'm at peace with it, but I do want to warn others. I couldn't agree more that God is the focus, not me, not you, not some pastor, and not even some Sunday morning franchise which claims to be a 'church'. God is beyond the walls of the church buildings, and frankly I don't think Jesus would be exceptionally welcome at most churches these days. If it took a few bad experiences to wake me up to the truth, well that's a small price to pay for me to be 'free indeed'. (Jn 8:36)
(cont.) I am an attender at his church and can honestly say I am challenged week in and week out to live a life that is holy and pleasing to the Lord, so who are you to say the way God speaks to someone like me through Matt is wrong? You obviously aren't moved by the Spirit when you hear Chandler teach, so move on and quit knit picking on someone God is using in an awesome way to bring people to Him.
i can't believe i'm jumping into this pointless argument, but @CSIsouthdallas please just shut your mouth. " but MATT does this soooo much in his sermons that he easily deters congregants from pursuing holiness at all." no sir that is not true, as evident by the NUMEROUS amount of believers under his leadership at The Village. and maybe you didn't take the time to observe the heart of some of these people that ARE passionately pursuing holiness whether you think he's preaching it or not. (cont.)
they dont have anything to do with God the Spirit , so they are deists.
as for the "pursuit of holiness" they did not, they only pretended to, for whitening the sepulchre is not holiness but that is all that comes from their efforts
i can't stand this guys' theology! He ALWAYS paints a negative picture of the believer's pursuit of holiness. I've heard so many sermons from him and even used to attend his church. 9 times out of 10, when Matt approaches the subject of obeying God's law, he brings up old experiences he's had with cuckoo religious pharisees (from christian summer camps , VBS and such). BUT JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE CHRISTIANS WHO PURSUE HOLINESS WRONGLY, that doesn't mean that we should shy away from the pursuit!!
@CSIsouthdallas he is not telling anyone to shy away from the pursuit of holiness.. but we can only achieve holiness with God's help and not on our own. Religion (as in the religious spirit) has been abusing and tormenting humans since day one of the fall.
@embluewinged I agree with your points but i was referring to his sermons as a whole and not just this particular video. Yes, the religious spirit must be preached against, but MATT does this soooo much in his sermons that he easily deters congregants from pursuing holiness at all. And that's dissapointing. I've noticed you've favorited alot of his videos. I bet you can't find ONE video on youtube or in his podcasts where he passionately preaches the PURSUIT OF HOLINESS! Matt just WON'T do it!:(
@embluewinged You misunderstood me bro. I was referring to his sermons as a whole and not just this particular video. Matt just WON'T do it!:(
@CSIsouthdallas obeying god's law? if you are not perfect, you do not obey the law, for he who breaks one breaks the lot, as it says in James.
pursuit of holiness? it either comes to repentance lead by the Holy Spirit whereby in holiness you are set free, or it is legalist hypocrisy, whitening the sepulchre.
if the believers pursuit of holiness comes from the carnal attitude it will ALWAYS be foolish self righteous nonsense
@Strefanasha My comment was in reference to the WAY Matt usually preaches on the pursuit of holiness. But, instead of actually READING what i wrote and responding with common sense, you decided to give a irrelevant "bible lesson". I did NOT ask anyone to explain or define the matter of "obeying God's law" or " the pursuit of holiness". Yet, this is exactly what you did. SMH. If you aren't able or willing to stick to the subject please REFRAIN from quoting me.
This confirms the danger we get into when invest far too much into an interpretation of the Bible and it comes back to haunt us. It's not the Bible itself that is the problem but our interpretation of it -which are many- that lead us astray. i'm wondering if Matt pointed this out...
wow, it's like he is yelling right at me, i was like that before my conversion and thank God i am still young and i didnt get to 30 and start cursing God like that.
I left the church, not because God "didn't give me what he owed me" but because churches don't even come close to meeting the expectations they slam on their congregants. The Bible isn't what it was presented to us as. And God's character is distorted and misrepresented on a regular basis by religious leaders in order to realize their goals.
The Church manipulates, controls, and abuses those of genuine faith.
@Mirkwood90 i see what you mean, but anyone who knows Christ know that we are called to seek fellowhip with other christians. i agree that the majority of churches don't practise what they preach, but as christians, i think we are called to confront the church leaders the the churches shortcomings, or search and search for other christians(whether that be a church, a small group of christians, or just a single person who shares your faith.
Isn´t it funny then that I have met more agnostics and pagans who reflect Christ´s love in their kindness. I have met wonderful people who profess Christ as Lord, but they are no more valuable than any other person to me to to God.
The ¨christian¨ virtues are not guaranteed nor limited to those who claim the Name of Christ for themselves.
I´m not looking to confront the Church anymore. It makes no real impact when you do. It just creates more division and disunity.
@Mirkwood90 I agree with you. Most of the kind of teaching you are talking about is the age old Pharisee religion with a "christian" stamp on their head. People not only leave the church for the reasons in this vid, but also because they have dipped into the sin that they know "pharisees" will shun them for. Like in this other guy's video about Jesus wanting the used up rose.... that is Jesus true heart. We are used up roses in need of a loving savior who helps us to be holy.
So true! Haven't heard many people admit this, but I completely agree. Preachers now assume everyone in the congregation is saved, knows God and just needs to hear Do and Dont's. Good video.
Hey guys, just wanted to direct everyone to a new ministry site listed on the channel's page. (Youtube doesn't allow websites in the comments) It'd be great if you all went to that website and read/commented the blog posts. And saved it to your favorites. Love you guys and can't wait to worship with you in heaven.
"We" leave the church because when something truely horrible happens we realize that the imaginary friend in our head just isn't helping and we need some actual help and advice
Good stuff. Keep in mind when watching this video that this is part of a much larger sermon, careful not to take it out of context. Anyone who has seen Matt Chandler knows his passion and style. He is real, his faith is being tested even now and he stands firm in his conviction and calling through the grace of Jesus Christ. There are plenty of times in Scripture where the Bible says that Jesus or His apostles "cried out loudly". There is nothing wrong with being yourself in a sermon.
That was a lopsided bit of a sermon. He rants and rants childishly but never says a single thing about God. What a moron. He needs to stay focused if he's going to preach.
Before you call him a moron and a child, maybe you should watch the whole video and not a mere 2 minute sample of the sermon. Matt Chandler is a powerful speaker and an incredible pastor. What he is saying is that Jesus is not interested in our deeds. There is nothing that we can "do" to earn our way to heaven (Moralistic Deism). It is only through Christ and his death on our behalf that we may come before God.
@lanceharvell I have watched him and I still hold to it. I'm going to further my research in what he believes but here's the thing. He never gets to his point. He goes this way and that. He flowers his speech but he never gets to his point.
then you've never really listened..you may have heard, but you haven't listened. He always gets to the point. Everytime. The point is the Gospel of Jesus. Podcast him if you want the whole picture.
@ixthustruth Still trying to hear the point. Have gone to a lot of videos and I still haven't heard a sermon that has gotten to the point. WIll keep searching.
@ixthustruth Okay. Here's my point. Here's a for instance. He flows this way and that but fails to preach the Word of God. Rather than, he attempts at bringing it into the modern form of thinking but failing at the point of it all. He starts a topic, skirts here, skirts there, stops. Goes over there a bit and then stops. But fails at bringing anything to light.
@StandOnTruth Your not going to get an entire point covered in a video on youtube.
go to the the village church .org and listen to a full sermon...The guy preaches through books of the bible verse by verse..so it is impossible for you to say he doesn't preach the word of God..he does, and in doing so reveals "the" Word of God. He always comes back to the gospel..everytime. If you have an ipod download the podcast..there free..can't beat free..lol
@ixthustruth I see what you mean but in regards to sermon. The ENTIRE sermon needs to be relevant. Not sketchy and jolts around here and there. It brings disorder.
have you listen to an entire sermon yet? listening to a 2 min snip-it on here is like reading one chapter from the bible...if you start a chapter that begins with the word "Therefore" and its the only chapter you read..then what you read may seem out of order...its not you just need the rest of it. Can you give me an example of someone that fits the criteria you are using? I'll check them out to see what you mean.
@ixthustruth Okay so now that's just a comment that makes no sense. We're discussing Chandler. And you want me to recommend someone to you? What are you talking about????
evidently there is a criteria that must be met for you to consider a man an efficient and effective preacher. There must be a pastor you listen to...I'm trying to get a handle on what your criteria looks like. Thats why I asked if there is a pastor you listen to online that is not what you see in Matt Chandler. I'm trying to understand your point of view
@ixthustruth I don't do pastor worship. Sorry hon. I'm a child of a pastor and I just don't get into "following" after preachers. I base my ideas on the Bible and what God says.
you don''t do pastor worship but you do pastor bashing...no one is worshipping a pastor (i hope) just defending a brother in Christ who preaches Christ crucified and risen from the dead. I listen to quite a few different guys...its what I do riding in my truck.
So basically what you are saying is that is strictly your opinion that he is a moron and doesn't know how to preach. You have nothing to compare his preaching to...thats my point.
@ixthustruth Not in the least and your point isn't even remotely accurate. But it is noted. Thanks for commenting but you don't know a single thing about what I know or anything of the sort. And one should never judge preaching on any other pastor or form of preaching. It should ONLY be based on scripture. Or otherwise you have fallen into idol worship. Be careful with that, son. Just be VERY careful with where you are led.
@StandOnTruth (you said) "That was a lopsided bit of a sermon. He rants and rants childishly but never says a single thing about God. What a moron. He needs to stay focused if he's going to preach"
(then you say) "And one should never judge preaching on any other pastor or form of preaching." (end quote) and that is exactly what you did in first comment.
This section makes perfect sense to me growing up in the "bible belt". Lots of church and moral teaching...not so much Gospel.
oh..and he does mention God multiple times in the vid..and honestly I don't pastor worship. I listen to Chandler (Dallas), Mark Driscoll (Seattle), John Piper (Minnesota), Tim Keller (NYC), Francis Chan (California), Ravi Zacharias, James McDonald(not sure). I like to listen to guys from the different cultural backgrounds from all corners of the country. They are all diffent styles. Chandler is completely diff than Piper, Ravi is from India, Driscoll is no pulled punches.
but they all preach the Gospel..everytime, no exceptions. Chandler is louder, Keller is quite, Piper pleads, Chan sounds like his having a conversation, Driscoll is passionate and has been know to yell at the men for being less than men. Ravi is an apologist and so is very rational. But again, they always preach and teach Christ crucified for our purification and Christ risen for our life. Everytime.
@ixthustruth I am also in the Bible Belt myself and have been raised here. And yes he is lopsided. Yes it is ranting. And YES you shouldn't base opinion on other pastors. Never once have I based this pastor on any other pastor. Never once. You should only base it on the Bible. If anyone is to preach, they need to preach on the word and make a point. So I'm sorry son, but by you saying that I'm basing my opinion on another pastor, you are sorely wrong. I don't do pastor worship
@ixthustruth Son, I am going through a loss right now. I can't talk about this. Let me emotionally handle this huge upheaval in my life and when I get back online, I will respond with an answer. Right now though....I'm losing something and I can't go into detail but it's really earth shattering (not my marriage). So I'm not ignoring you. I'm just in the middle of a crisis.
I'm sorry to hear that..truly. In times like this feel free to ignore all things that distract from what is important, especially online discussions. I hope things do work out for the best..I will pray for you tonight.
@ladyoprah -- Insanity? Perhaps you could elaborate?
What Matt is saying is this: People come to, or grow up in, Christianity and get drilled into their heads that the entire point of Christianity is "being good" and that God will make their lives easier as long as they do "X." When that doesn't happen, they reject this fake version of Christianity and lump in the real thing with it.
He's got a good biblical point, but that's not the only way people get "de-churched." atleast in the context of what all he was saying in this short clip.. I haven't seen the whole video..
"For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander to myths."
The most important thing here is what he says in the very beginning: The Gospel and the nature and character of God can never be assumed. Don't let that pass you by. Many churches, meaning well in trying to feed and warn the saints, probably fall into the error of assuming hearers are solidly saved by God's grace. But if they're not, all you have is moralizing. Gospel-less moralizers will be in Hell with the immoral. The Gospel must always be the first order of business.
One man show is tradition not scripture. One Pastor doing all the preaching is wrong. There are many preachers who attend Church and should be qualified by elders to take the pulpit much more often. If Pastor taught correctly he should be able to select for the pulpit
@polopowers1 yeah, so sorry about your church experience, but i have yet to see a one-man show church... maybe i could handle your criticism of the church a little better if you used scripture to back it up. i haven't seen you do that yet, and if you're criticizing the church you should definitely be doing that, rather than just going on you're personal feelings...
@andrew7stevenson I don't have bad Church experiences, that is your assumption.Pastor teacher is listed as a gift not a office.I Tim 2Tim Titus. The elder is listed as a man of office which is established by character only. Many gifts are in a Assembly and no where in scripture will you find one preaching..
@bthomd Don't attend word faith church that is an attack not a biblical response, not into fame. And the book of Acts is not a book you use for church doctrine only the immature think that.Acts is not a book for doctrine of the church.I always know when I'm talking to a babe they attack the person emotionally
@bthomd I guess you forgot calling me self seeking? And you never answer context you keep saying I had A bad time in Church because I raise the question of theology of the Church .Which is what I did some in respect until personally w challenged which is what your still doing insulting telling me my church history thinking it bad.If you made mistake in theology no big deal but you attacked me personally from the start with your claims and there was no call
@polopowers1 i don't check youtube emails so i just saw this now... i thought that the command to "preach the word" in 2 Timothy 4:2 literally meant to preach the word... its a command.
@polopowers1 well we're commanded to "preach the word". you get more than one guy preaching at once you just get a big mess, so we have one guy preach at a time. if you didn't mean one guy with your "exclusive" than i just don't understand. the guy's doing what he's commanded to do, so don't knock him.
@andrew7stevenson One man shows are not scriptual. Elders are to chose those examined to preach.Congregations depending on their size have more than one man who can preach. Pastors taken over the pulpit is tradition not scripture.Bible college or seminary does not make a man exclusive to the pulpit. Its not personal its strictly scripture. Your taking it nto personel, knock who? There is no big mess when leaders appoint gifted men.Agendas are not for the Church
Men are de churched because one man shows are not biblical. There is no way scriptuarlly are you going to find only one man should do most of the teaching and preaching.
I dont know what you've seen, but many churches I've been exposed to have one pastor, but its not a one man show. We have youth leaders, bible study teachers, prayer partners, and so on.
@Phonyender I've seen alot the main man is always the Pastor whom among hundreds of men takes complete control of the pulpit. If not insecure himself the pulpit would be shared by qualified men.Its a cop out when we make excuses for this theology, one man Pastor shows are not Biblical. And youth Pastors do not cover the laity which should be able to preach with a gift discerned by elders.Again for the most part Pastors choice leaders who do not intimidated to them
Ok mr. Matt I agree this happens ...BUT ...BUT ...BUT .. More than what you're accusing those who are guilty of preaching the law...SO much more of what is really happening ...IS that the pure gospel is being preached ..and people are hearing something else .The truth is going out and people hear what they thought they heard ..what they wanted to hear..ALL we like sheep have gone astray .Lets count the numbers of times the gospel was yell in our faces cried from the house tops and we missed it
@zwreckless1 You need to watch this whole message and realize this is a section of a much greater message, that does talk about the importance of hearing the true gospel.
similar to His birth i'm not sure the day he died is theologically relevant but its noteworthy that scholars derive from the text that it took place on the day of atonement on the jewish calendar and supposedly that translates into the gregorian calendar's marking of "good friday" in relation to "easter" although im not sure this wasn't another case of saints "taking" a pagan holiday and associating it with a biblical event for evangelical purposes, not sure what the 2nd question means
the reply of the jewish crowd saying they have no king but caesar is a front by them to persuade the roman authority (in this case pilate) to do what it is they want him to do which was crucify Jesus, and "the king of the jews" inscription was the charge against him and was a form of mockery much like everything else involving the roman style of crucifixion such as physical and emotional abuse and helplessness and humiliation which only begins to scratch the surface of that which Jesus suffered
John was using the Roman measurement of time when dealing with the crucifixion. Matthew, Mark, and Luke, for the most part, used the Hebrew system of measuring a day: from sundown to sunup. The Roman system was from midnight to midnight. "John wrote his gospel in Ephesus, the capital of the Roman province of Asia, and therefore in regard to the civil day he would be likely to employ the Roman reckoning.1
@AAL in Mark 15:25, it says Jesus was crucified in the third hour. in John 19:14-15, Pilate presented Jesus to the crowd in the sixth hour, before the crucifixion, so that would mean the scriptures are referring to different times. Now as to hour of what, i'm honestly not too sure. it'd be something i'd have to look in to, but i'm certain it's not talking about the same time.
I'm sure you'll do what I did when I was a christian. You'll put it in that box filled with all the other questions and things that don't make any sense.
i would say they agree because they're 2 different descriptions of the same tribe of judah through the davidic line which for the theological issue at hand is sufficient for the purpose that they were written, and the term "begat" is loosely applied to generations to the jews the people to whom these books were intended to speak to. an example would be Abraham begat isaac and isaac begat jacob but to the jewish mind "abraham begat jacob" is not a false statement nor is it strange
God created us for fellowship with him. Not because He was lonely but to show the greatness of His glory and grace. Man sinned against God, but God prepared a way to cover our crime against Him by sending His one and only eternal Son to take the punishment for us so that we may be perfected and declared righteous In Him (Jesus). So whoever calls on the the name of the Lord Jesus will be saved including Atheist, Jew, Muslim, self-righteous Christians and yes gays too, God calls all to repent.
That's what Jesus meant when he told the Pharisees that they do not get into heaven, nor do they let those who are trying to enter in. They go to all these great heights to expound on minute little "rules" and meanwhile forget the WHOLE POINT... So people they teach become twice the "sons of hell" that they are.
It's sooo true, I've seen it happen to many friends and for a while even experienced it myself...
those were outside of the ordained scriptures (and gospels) in the bible...
AAL, why would Paul, (who was a real person by the way and was even more adamant about Christianity than you are), change his entire life just to tell people about God if He wasn't real?
why would an entire world know about a "fake" person and start Churches to spread His name? why didn't He die out?
why do we have the ability to prove and disprove things (even in space), but we lack the ability to shut down one name?
or perhaps YOU are the one that is right, all along.
perhaps over the past two thousand years the MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION OF THE EARTH was completely incapable of denying it so they just had to go along with it... but no, no, no you are the one who is actually going to prove something that NO ONE ELSE could (and they had Millenniums on you to start with).
good luck with that.
I believe, and i follow. all i can do is inform you of His name, the rest is up to you.
I barley caught what you said before it got removed. All I was saying was for you to check out the interview with Lee Strobel and John McRay... it deals with the discussion if Nazareth exist or not.
what do i think Jesus would say about God being on money? well it might start with this...
Trust in the Lord your God with all your heart. then he would add on to it from scripture that states, wherever your treasure is (or wherever your money goes) is where your heart is.
and yes, you are absolutely right Jesus would not think much of Christianity at all...
did you know when Jesus walked the Earth there was no such thing as Christianity, it was called "The Way".
it was a lifestyle not a religion... Jesus never wanted to start a religion He wanted a relationship that would set a lifestyle not one that would set to-do lists and agendas...
Matt Carter puts it as this "at some point we started going to church, and stopped being a church"
Please explain how you would MEASURE and TEST that George Washington was a president.
We are talking about historical documents not the scientific method.
You don't test ancient events with the scientific method!!!
There are over 6,000 manuscripts of the New Testament alone. Some of those were copied within 60 years of the originals and there are portions of Matthew that are old enough to be originals. The Bible is a collection of testimonies about the resurrection of Christ...
Please explain how you would MEASURE and TEST that George Washington was a president. You don't test ancient events with the scientific method!!!
There are over 6,000 manuscripts of the New Testament alone. Some of those were copied within 60 years of the originals and there are portions of Matthew that are old enough to be originals. The Bible is a collection of testimonies about the resurrection of Christ from eye-witnesses. compare to Caesar- only 9 manuscripts written 1400 years later
The bible is a book that doesn't match what we know about history, archeology, cosmology, geology or any of the other sciences. It's full of contradictions and out right fairy tales.
AAL you are good at this, this obviously is not your first dispute of Christianity (at least i hope not considering you are talking to people you do not know, as am i).
but still, you have no disproof of Christ... nor does the rest of the world (it's been over 2,000 years, so i, along with all the other Christ followers say, you have had plenty of time to try to kill His name... however, check your money. He still reigns.
i would love for you to reply back in discussion, not argument.
People with week minds believe in the supernatural, not surprising other faiths would attribute sorcery to Jesus. Even more so when they believe in holy stones and flying donkeys.
If Jesus had real power, why didn't he cure blindness in humans instead of doing it one person at a time?
Show me one text outside the scriptures written in Jesus' time that talks about him, King Hared's Massacre of the Innocents or even the town of Nazareth.
Jesus didn't cure the blind anymore then Apollonius of Tyana did.
I will give you three guys to look up that spoke of Jesus Christ and were not writers of the Bible. Please read the writings of Josephus, the letters of Pliny the Younger to Emperor Trajan. and Tacitus, a Roman. Also you can count the Bible as a resource as well.
None of them were alive at the time of Jesus. Please try again. The closest was about 30 years. That's like me writing a first hand account of James Dean.
I have a question. Why are you so against using Scripture as a frame of references for the actuality of Christ? Give me a few references of of people denoting Christ every walking the earth, if you do not mind.
Christian scriptures were not written during Jesus life. Nor were they written by the characters attributed by believers. They contain numerous contradictions and historical falsehoods.
The child molester quote is only evidence that it is not just your mind that is against God. It's your whole heart. You took an intellectual debate to a personal attacking level. Your bias against God isnt actually set in the evidence then, and until we get to the real issues nothing we say can have any sort of weight on you.
Can you prove your mom loves you? What if she is just pretending? You could never prove it as a concrete truth, yet you know she does. Not all truths are provable beyone the shadows of doubt. Our souls cry out for or against God is the most solid proof we have, and if people were to deny the existance of that what can I say? I could deny the existance of beauty. What could you say?
Lol well the only reason I bring it up is that God can be real without certainty, and we have reasons to believe he is real, just like you have reasons to believe your mom loves you.
And if the matrix were real your two examples can be false too! lol. Now we go deep.
But man knows hardly anything beyond what can be tested and all we are left with is this aching in our gut that longs for something more then these four walls. I have never filled that hole more then I have with God.
lol or at least you think you are! But how can you prove to anyone else that you plan on doing something? Same thing with your sexual stimula lol. Maybe you know it for yourself, but how can you prove it to others? ^.^
"You can't prove you didn't do something." The justice system disagrees. Defense lawyers attempt to prove that people didn't commit crimes that they are accused of. That statement is illogical. I suppose you will argue that my belief is illogical. It's kind of a catch 22. Everyone has some area of their life where they believe something that they can not logically explain to another person. Things that others would have had to been in your shoes to understand.
Are you making fun of me to avoid addressing the fact that man in the video I provided proved you wrong?
There are ways to proves certain kinds of negatives. By my best estimation, me not liking to listen to little girls pee is not a provable negative, nor does it matter in determining whether or not negative are unprovable, as you claimed. Let's be sensible.
Not even the part about inherent contradictions? That wasn't a sufficient example of one way to prove a negative?
"There are no married bachelors" is a negative proof because it's a contradiction. Does that not suffice as a evidence that it's possible to prove negatives?

That's not the ONLY way dechurched happens. As someone who has absolutely no intention of ever returning to a church I'll tell you that I quickly became "dechurched" when I overheard ministry leaders cracking jokes about 30 year old virgins within in the church. I was dechurhced when I studied what the publisher, not the preacher, claims about the bible. I became dechurched when my questions were answered with insults and hostility.
gsschoenfeld 6 months ago
@gsschoenfeld I am very hurt that you have experienced this whithin the church community. And you're absolutely right. The church can be full of hostile, two faced, ruthless, and judgmental people. My hope, and my prayer, is that you look past those people and look to God, because he is the focus not us ourselves. If there is one thing that we can wrong in America, and it's crucial, it is this: God is the focus, we are not, and he is the only one worthy of praise and honor.
RideCakeEatDirt 5 months ago

" but MATT does this soooo much in his sermons that he easily deters congregants from pursuing holiness at all." no sir that is not true, as evident by the NUMEROUS amount of believers under his leadership at The Village. and maybe you didn't take the time to observe the heart of some of these people that ARE passionately pursuing holiness whether you think he's preaching it or not. moralistic deism.
exactly.
they dont have anything to do with God the Spirit , so they are deists.
as for the "pursuit of holiness" they did not, they only pretended to, for whitening the sepulchre is not holiness but that is all that comes from their efforts

i can't stand this guys' theology!
CSIsouthdallas 8 months ago
@CSIsouthdallas he is not telling anyone to shy away from the pursuit of holiness.. but we can only achieve holiness with God's help and not on our own. Religion (as in the religious spirit) has been abusing and tormenting humans since day one of the fall.
embluewinged 8 months ago
@embluewinged I agree with your points but i was referring to his sermons as a whole and not just this particular video. Yes, the religious spirit must be preached against, but MATT does this soooo much in his sermons that he easily deters congregants from pursuing holiness at all. And that's dissapointing. I've noticed you've favorited alot of his videos. I bet you can't find ONE video on youtube or in his podcasts where he passionately preaches the PURSUIT OF HOLINESS! Matt just WON'T do it!:(

Strefanasha 7 months ago
@Strefanasha My comment was in reference to the WAY Matt usually preaches on the pursuit of holiness. But, instead of actually READING what i wrote and responding with common sense, you decided to give a irrelevant "bible lesson". I did NOT ask anyone to explain or define the matter of "obeying God's law" or " the pursuit of holiness". Yet, this is exactly what you did. SMH. If you aren't able or willing to stick to the subject please REFRAIN from quoting me.
CSIsouthdallas 7 months ago
This confirms the danger we get into when invest far too much into an interpretation of the Bible and it comes back to haunt us. It's not the Bible itself that is the problem but our interpretation of it -which are many- that lead us astray. i'm wondering if Matt pointed this out...

I still hold fast to my belief in God and Christ.
I just lost faith in Church
Mirkwood90 10 months ago 2
@Mirkwood90 i see what you mean, but anyone who knows Christ know that we are called to seek fellowhip with other christians. i agree that the majority of churches don't practise what they preach, but as christians, i think we are called to confront the church leaders the the churches shortcomings, or search and search for other christians(whether that be a church, a small group of christians, or just a single person who shares your faith.
setiwoh 10 months ago
@setiwoh
Mirkwood90 10 months ago
@Mirkwood90 Nice comment. I have experienced that often as well.
specialk818181 9 months ago
@Mirkwood90 I agree with you. Most of the kind of teaching you are talking about is the age old Pharisee religion with a "christian" stamp on their head. People not only leave the church for the reasons in this vid, but also because they have dipped into the sin that they know "pharisees" will shun them for. Like in this other guy's video about Jesus wanting the used up rose.... that is Jesus true heart. We are used up roses in need of a loving savior who helps us to be holy.
embluewinged 8 months ago
So true! Haven't heard many people admit this, but I completely agree. Preachers now assume everyone in the congregation is saved, knows God and just needs to hear Do and Dont's. Good video.

There is nothing wrong with being yourself in a sermon.

butterflykisses054 1 year ago
That was a lopsided bit of a sermon. He rants and rants childishly but never says a single thing about God. What a moron. He needs to stay focused if he's going to preach.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth
It is only through Christ and his death on our behalf that we may come before God.
lanceharvell 1 year ago
@lanceharvell I have watched him and I still hold to it. I'm going to further my research in what he believes but here's the thing. He never gets to his point. He goes this way and that. He flowers his speech but he never gets to his point.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth
then you've never really listened..you may have heard, but you haven't listened. He always gets to the point. Everytime. The point is the Gospel of Jesus. Podcast him if you want the whole picture.
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth Still trying to hear the point. Have gone to a lot of videos and I still haven't heard a sermon that has gotten to the point. WIll keep searching.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth Okay. Here's my point. Here's a for instance. He flows this way and that but fails to preach the Word of God. Rather than, he attempts at bringing it into the modern form of thinking but failing at the point of it all. He starts a topic, skirts here, skirts there, stops. Goes over there a bit and then stops. But fails at bringing anything to light.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth Your not going to get an entire point covered in a video on youtube.
go to the the village church .org and listen to a full sermon...The guy preaches through books of the bible verse by verse..so it is impossible for you to say he doesn't preach the word of God..he does, and in doing so reveals "the" Word of God. He always comes back to the gospel..everytime. If you have an ipod download the podcast..there free..can't beat free..lol
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth I see what you mean but in regards to sermon. The ENTIRE sermon needs to be relevant. Not sketchy and jolts around here and there. It brings disorder.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth
have you listen to an entire sermon yet? listening to a 2 min snip-it on here is like reading one chapter from the bible...if you start a chapter that begins with the word "Therefore" and its the only chapter you read..then what you read may seem out of order...its not you just need the rest of it. Can you give me an example of someone that fits the criteria you are using? I'll check them out to see what you mean.

StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth
evidently there is a criteria that must be met for you to consider a man an efficient and effective preacher. There must be a pastor you listen to...I'm trying to get a handle on what your criteria looks like. Thats why I asked if there is a pastor you listen to online that is not what you see in Matt Chandler. I'm trying to understand your point of view
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth I don't do pastor worship. Sorry hon. I'm a child of a pastor and I just don't get into "following" after preachers. I base my ideas on the Bible and what God says.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth bviously
you don''t do pastor worship but you do pastor bashing...no one is worshipping a pastor (i hope) just defending a brother in Christ who preaches Christ crucified and risen from the dead. I listen to quite a few different guys...its what I do riding in my truck.
So basically what you are saying is that is strictly your opinion that he is a moron and doesn't know how to preach. You have nothing to compare his preaching to...thats my point.
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth Not in the least and your point isn't even remotely accurate. But it is noted. Thanks for commenting but you don't know a single thing about what I know or anything of the sort. And one should never judge preaching on any other pastor or form of preaching. It should ONLY be based on scripture. Or otherwise you have fallen into idol worship. Be careful with that, son. Just be VERY careful with where you are led.
StandOnTruth 1 year ago
@StandOnTruth (you said) "That was a lopsided bit of a sermon. He rants and rants childishly but never says a single thing about God. What a moron. He needs to stay focused if he's going to preach"
(then you say) "And one should never judge preaching on any other pastor or form of preaching." (end quote) and that is exactly what you did in first comment.
This section makes perfect sense to me growing up in the "bible belt". Lots of church and moral teaching...not so much Gospel.
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth
oh..and he does mention God multiple times in the vid..and honestly I don't pastor worship. Chandler is completely diff than Piper, Ravi is from India, Driscoll is no pulled punches.
ixthustruth 1 year ago
@ixthustruth
but they all preach the Gospel..everytime, no exceptions. Everytime.
ixthustruth 1 year ago 53
@ixthustruth I am also in the Bible Belt myself and have been raised here. And yes he is lopsided. Yes it is ranting. And YES you shouldn't base opinion on other pastors. Never once have I based this pastor on any other pastor. Never once. You should only base it on the Bible. If anyone is to preach, they need to preach on the word and make a point. So I'm sorry son, but by you saying that I'm basing my opinion on another pastor, you are sorely wrong. I don't do pastor worship

What Matt is saying is this: People come to, or grow up in, Christianity and get drilled into their heads that the entire point of Christianity is "being good" and that God will make their lives easier as long as they do "X." When that doesn't happen, they reject this fake version of Christianity and lump in the real thing with it.

@andrew7stevenson it is a command but not an exclusive one so I don't undertand your reply
polopowers1 11 months ago
@polopowers1 well we're commanded to "preach the word". you get more than one guy preaching at once you just get a big mess, so we have one guy preach at a time. if you didn't mean one guy with your "exclusive" than i just don't understand. the guy's doing what he's commanded to do, so don't knock him.
andrew7stevenson 11 months ago
@andrew7stevenson One man shows are not scriptual. Elders are to chose those examined to preach.Congregations depending on their size have more than one man who can preach. Pastors taken over the pulpit is tradition not scripture.Bible college or seminary does not make a man exclusive to the pulpit. Its not personal its strictly scripture. Your taking it nto personel, knock who? There is no big mess when leaders appoint gifted men.Agendas are not for the Church

AAL 2 years ago
similar to His birth i'm not sure the day he died is theologically relevant but its noteworthy that scholars derive from the text that it took place on the day of atonement on the jewish calendar and supposedly that translates into the gregorian calendar's marking of "good friday" in relation to "easter" although im not sure this wasn't another case of saints "taking" a pagan holiday and associating it with a biblical event for evangelical purposes, not sure what the 2nd question means

the reply of the jewish crowd saying they have no king but caesar is a front by them to persuade the roman authority (in this case pilate) to do what it is they want him to do which was crucify Jesus, and "the king of the jews" inscription was the charge against him and was a form of mockery much like everything else involving the roman style of crucifixion such as physical and emotional abuse and helplessness and humiliation which only begins to scratch the surface of that which Jesus suffered
SDGfella 2 years ago
It's like you don't even read what I write.
AAL 2 years ago
John was using the Roman measurement of time when dealing with the crucifixion. Matthew, Mark, and Luke, for the most part, used the Hebrew system of measuring a day: from sundown to sunup. The Roman system was from midnight to midnight. "John wrote his gospel in Ephesus, the capital of the Roman province of Asia, and therefore in regard to the civil day he would be likely to employ the Roman reckoning.1
THEGROUND21 2 years ago
@AAL in Mark 15:25, it says Jesus was crucified in the third hour. in John 19:14-15, Pilate presented Jesus to the crowd in the sixth hour, before the crucifixion, so that would mean the scriptures are referring to different times. Now as to hour of what, i'm honestly not too sure. it'd be something i'd have to look in to, but i'm certain it's not talking about the same time.

i would say they agree because they're 2 different descriptions of the same tribe of judah through the davidic line which for the theological issue at hand is sufficient for the purpose that they were written, and the term "begat" is loosely applied to generations to the jews the people to whom these books were intended to speak to. an example would be Abraham begat isaac and isaac begat jacob but to the jewish mind "abraham begat jacob" is not a false statement nor is it strange

This is so true!!!
It's sooo true, I've seen it happen to many friends and for a while even experienced it myself...

or perhaps YOU are the one that is right, all along.
perhaps over the past two thousand years the MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION OF THE EARTH was completely incapable of denying it so they just had to go along with it... but no, no, no you are the one who is actually going to prove something that NO ONE ELSE could (and they had Millenniums on you to start with).
good luck with that.
I believe, and i follow. all i can do is inform you of His name, the rest is up to you.

Mr. 0Beanz0,
I know we have been having this discussion with Mr. AAL for a while now. I just want to say keep up the good work.
Gal. 3:13

i appreciate the encouragement
however, i fear this will end in rolled eyes and "oh well they will never learn" from both us and AAL, and thats not what i want.
the point of this is to walk out with something you didn't have before...
as for AAL... the last thing i want to do is put AAL down with discouragement, rather i want to open AAL's eyes to different ideas.
Frankly, i dont care if AAL likes me, i would rather AAL walk away saying "he's an idiot but, this Christ guy is interesting"
0Beanz0 2 years ago
Also I was wondering if there was any text that you would be able to present that Christ does not exist?
sja552 2 years ago
Mr. AAL,
I barley caught what you said before it got removed. All I was saying was for you to check out the interview with Lee Strobel and John McRay... it deals with the discussion if Nazareth exist or not.
sja552 2 years ago
you should also check out....

Mr. AAL,
Have you looked at Lee Strobel's interview with leading NT archaeologst John McRay. When it comes to Nazareth?
You should check it out.

what do i think Jesus would say about God being on money? well it might start with this...
Trust in the Lord your God with all your heart. then he would add on to it from scripture that states, wherever your treasure is (or wherever your money goes) is where your heart is.
0Beanz0 2 years ago
and yes, you are absolutely right Jesus would not think much of Christianity at all...
did you know when Jesus walked the Earth there was no such thing as Christianity, it was called "The Way".
it was a lifestyle not a religion... Jesus never wanted to start a religion He wanted a relationship that would set a lifestyle not one that would set to-do lists and agendas...
Matt Carter puts it as this "at some point we started going to church, and stopped being a church"

But what evidence would convince you god wasn't real?
I would believe in god if he was measurable or testable. The same way I believe in anything else.
AAL 2 years ago
How do you know George Washington was a president of the USA?
Is that measurable or testable??
the reason you are breathing and your heart is beating is because it pleases Jesus to sustain you.
CorkyBB 2 years ago
Sure it's measurable and testable. We could use many different scientific disciplines to help prove it.
How do you know Leprechauns aren't real?
AAL 2 years ago
Please explain how you would MEASURE and TEST that George Washington was a president.
We are talking about historical documents not the scientific method.
You don't test ancient events with the scientific method!!!
There are over 6,000 manuscripts of the New Testament alone. Some of those were copied within 60 years of the originals and there are portions of Matthew that are old enough to be originals. The Bible is a collection of testimonies about the resurrection of Christ...

CorkyBB 2 years ago
You can test anything with the scientific method.
The bible is a book that doesn't match what we know about history, archeology, cosmology, geology or any of the other sciences. It's full of contradictions and out right fairy tales.
AAL 2 years ago
Do you believe for something to be true, it must be measurable and testable?
That's a curious view...
since the statement "something is only true if it is measurable and testable" is not measurable and testable.
When you make a demand on someone else's view, subject your statement to it's own demands.
Science's exclusive claim to truth is not scientifically justifiable. Weird, huh?

Heck I would think after believing in talking snakes, human sacrifice and a man living in a fish you would be up to believing anything?
Let me ask you. Is there any evidence that would make you change your mind?
AAL 2 years ago
AAL you are good at this, this obviously is not your first dispute of Christianity (at least i hope not considering you are talking to people you do not know, as am i).
but still, you have no disproof of Christ... nor does the rest of the world (it's been over 2,000 years, so i, along with all the other Christ followers say, you have had plenty of time to try to kill His name... however, check your money. He still reigns.
i would love for you to reply back in discussion, not argument.
0Beanz0 2 years ago
AAL why is it that every religion that opposed Jesus, while He was alive, never denied that He existed?
AAL why is it that of those same religions, no one denied what Jesus did, but instead called it sorcery/black magic?
AAL, if He was a sorcerer/black magic evil doer then why did He not once use it for Himself?
Show me your proof, and i will show you someone who has never read the bible, yet still argues its TRUTH.
0Beanz0 2 years ago
I don't think Jesus ever lived.
People with week minds believe in the supernatural, not surprising other faiths would attribute sorcery to Jesus. Even more so when they believe in holy stones and flying donkeys.
If Jesus had real power, why didn't he cure blindness in humans instead of doing it one person at a time?
AAL 2 years ago
It doesn't matter what you think. Historical truths/texts tells us He lived. Even secularists acknowledge Jesus' existence, but they deny His deity.
So are you admitting with that question that Jesus did indeed live and cure blindness?
syracusefan1 2 years ago
Show me one text outside the scriptures written in Jesus' time that talks about him, King Hared's Massacre of the Innocents or even the town of Nazareth.
Jesus didn't cure the blind anymore then Apollonius of Tyana did.

the nag hammadi library and the dead sea scrolls to start...
oh wait you only asked for one

Stop typing start reading. I said outside the gospels and during Jesus' time.
AAL 2 years ago
Mr. AAL,
I will give you three guys to look up that spoke of Jesus Christ and were not writers of the Bible. Please read the writings of Josephus, the letters of Pliny the Younger to Emperor Trajan. and Tacitus, a Roman. Also you can count the Bible as a resource as well.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

These three gentle men where either alive when Christ was or soon after were alive (with in 10 years or so)
sja552 2 years ago
None of them were alive at the time of Jesus. Please try again. The closest was about 30 years. That's like me writing a first hand account of James Dean.
AAL 2 years ago
I have a question. Why are you so against using Scripture as a frame of references for the actuality of Christ? Give me a few references of of people denoting Christ every walking the earth, if you do not mind.
sja552 2 years ago
Christian scriptures were not written during Jesus life. Nor were they written by the characters attributed by believers. They contain numerous contradictions and historical falsehoods.
I'm sorry I don't understand your 2nd sentence.
AAL 2 years ago
I would like for you to give me references... that denote, or claim, that Christ existed.
sja552 2 years ago
make that claim that he did not exist, is what I meant.
sja552 2 years ago
First give me references that you are not a child molester.
You can't disprove a negative.
I can't prove Jesus wasn't someplace. Just like you can't prove that magic blue space monkeys do NOT live inside the sun.
AAL 2 years ago
The child molester quote is only evidence that it is not just your mind that is against God. It's your whole heart. You took an intellectual debate to a personal attacking level. Your bias against God isnt actually set in the evidence then, and until we get to the real issues nothing we say can have any sort of weight on you.
LifeReborn7 2 years ago
You're not getting the point of what I said. Please let me restate:
YOU CANNOT PROVE A NEGATIVE!
You can't prove you didn't do something.
Try it. It's just not possible.
You're the one making this personal. Your choice to end the debate based on your own unjustified persecution
AAL 2 years ago
Can you prove your mom loves you? What if she is just pretending? You could never prove it as a concrete truth, yet you know she does. Not all truths are provable beyone the shadows of doubt. Our souls cry out for or against God is the most solid proof we have, and if people were to deny the existance of that what can I say? I could deny the existance of beauty. What could you say?
LifeReborn7 2 years ago
I have evidence that my mother loves me. But yes she could be pretending, and it's true that there could be no certainty.
There are only two things I have found that you can truly know with any real certainty:
1 Your own intentions
2 What makes you horny
Anything else could just be a memory implant or the matrix or whatever.
Can you think of any others?
AAL 2 years ago
Lol well the only reason I bring it up is that God can be real without certainty, and we have reasons to believe he is real, just like you have reasons to believe your mom loves you.
And if the matrix were real your two examples can be false too! lol. Now we go deep.
But man knows hardly anything beyond what can be tested and all we are left with is this aching in our gut that longs for something more then these four walls. I have never filled that hole more then I have with God.
LifeReborn7 2 years ago
No the two examples cannot be false.
You might be controlled to do something, but you do know if you plan to do it or not.
Your sexual preferences maybe controlled, but you do know if you are sexual excited by something.
AAL 2 years ago
lol or at least you think you are! But how can you prove to anyone else that you plan on doing something? Same thing with your sexual stimula lol. Maybe you know it for yourself, but how can you prove it to others? ^.^
LifeReborn7 2 years ago
Impossible to prove.
But like I said they are things that YOU can know with any certain.
AAL 2 years ago
"You can't prove you didn't do something." The justice system disagrees. Defense lawyers attempt to prove that people didn't commit crimes that they are accused of. That statement is illogical. I suppose you will argue that my belief is illogical. It's kind of a catch 22. Everyone has some area of their life where they believe something that they can not logically explain to another person. Things that others would have had to been in your shoes to understand.
HarmonyinJesus 2 years ago
Actually, "you cannot prove a negative" is a false statement. See the video below:

Then prove you don't like to listen to little girls pee
AAL 2 years ago
Are you making fun of me to avoid addressing the fact that man in the video I provided proved you wrong?
There are ways to proves certain kinds of negatives. By my best estimation, me not liking to listen to little girls pee is not a provable negative, nor does it matter in determining whether or not negative are unprovable, as you claimed. Let's be sensible.
dugw15 2 years ago
I watched your video. There is nothing in it that shows me you can prove a negative. Let alone prove that god is real.
AAL 2 years ago
Not even the part about inherent contradictions? That wasn't a sufficient example of one way to prove a negative?
"There are no married bachelors" is a negative proof because it's a contradiction. Does that not suffice as a evidence that it's possible to prove negatives?
