@Twankiejones, good question. Technically they won't allow turbos in the mud races, however, we fought and fought to get a turbo. When we became competitive people started complaining. Anyway, answer to your question is single, they absolutely refuse to allow double turbo.
@Boomer8404 I really could not say, we have yet to have it dyno'ed. We are still working on getting the engine running right before we take it to be tested. We debated having it tested, but we are making so many changes each race to try and make it compeditive. Once we have the engine perfected, we will definitly have it tested.
@GMCman82 that is because 5.9 is the litre engine, 360 is cubic inch of the engine (or 359 depending on what who you want to believe) while 450 is our racing number. (There is also a Case International Stieger 450 tractor that I think we chose to number our truck after). We were glad they let us pick our own number, they used to assign us a number like F6 and G4.
@TNunnelee yeah i know the 5.9 is a 360, and i thought the 450 was your number, im just one that dosent assume, id rather ask so im not confused with one of the many teenage web wheelers that are out there who dosent have a car other than what their parents drive. i just didnt know if the cummins came in a 5.9 or if it was a custom build. either way you cant go wrong with a cummins they are the pinnacle of diesel engineering with superior reliability and design. cant wait for the 1/2 ton cummins
hey i have a question i am thinking about putting a cummins 5.9l into my chevy same as urs it is a stepside k10 i have already put 1 ton axles in it and it currently sports a 550hp 454 bbc but the motor is going into another project and was thinking of going to diesel power can u give me some advise?
@zemmy1985 Thanks man. If it makes you feel any better we are ford guys too, we just have more experience with the cummins diesel engine. We have done quite a few Ford conversions where we place a Cummins engine in a Ford body.....just a great combination.
@TNunnelee I agree, stickin diesels in 1/2 ton trucks is a wicked combination. I don't know what the size comparison of the 300 straight six and Cummins is, but a Cummins in a 80s Ford stepside would be great
@TNunnelee Im not a genus but I think you should give it a little less fuel and a smaller turbo or turbine housing, cause that thing rips when the boost kick's in!
@cameron947 its probably a 12 valve and when he punches it wide open it takes it a minute to come up cause of all the fuel in the cylinder the pumps putting in there
unfortunately we are only allowed to run a single and they hate us doing that. The gas burners are not allowed to run a turbo, but we have to, in order to be competitive. Did you also notice that the smoke turns clear right before we take off? Thats when we know its time to go!
@TNunnelee im guessing thats cuz your making enough boost to finally burn all that fuel.... i just wanted to ask if you build your own motors or if not who deos?
sbchp54,The motors are built by Chester Hensley of the Diesel Shop in Eudora Arkansas. I am the one that talked him into letting me film some of his incredible creations and mud races. It is a blast just being around him watching him work.
Well it will be sometime next summer and called the rcca mud racing. You can find details at iracemud.com. We sat out this season, but we should be back next season...we will be posting on youtube when we start testing again.
wow man i gotta say i've watch this vid about a billion times and i wish my truck had a tenth the balls this thing does.... kinda want to steal it an see how well it does in the dunes, i want specs and how much fuel does it burn in a run.... my god im almost speachless great truck
That would be a Cummins. Duramax and Powerstroke are both good engines, but (in our opinion) they can't hold a candle to Cummins. We like a Ford truck but the first thing we do to them is pull the engine and put a Cummins in there. Such is the case with our pull truck in the Civic Center tractor pull clip.
@TNunnelee I love that dude, I'm in the marines right now, going in for LWV Mechanics like working on the hummers and such, all diesel, and once I get out Im building a Mud truck with a Cummins straight from the ground up.
That truck must set you back in your seat a shit load eh ? ;) hahah
Don't know for sure how much horsepower, we have yet to test it on a dyno. Its a single due to the racing regulations we had to fight just to get that.
just to let you know any real cummins guy knows its not a 360 if i were you id change that before to mny comps where people well call you out hand down tho its an awesome truck
Good observation! However, we did our math on the cubic inches of the motor, and it did come down being over 359 cubic inches. So we were trying to decide to use the decimal points and round up or not.....and we think bigger is better, so we rounded up to 360, but yes if you do not use the decimal points, in figuring your cubic inches, it is a 359 cubic inch.
ha ha ha, thanks man, would love to do it but NY is a little far away for us...but you never know...once we get this thing tuned just right we might start making enough money to do some traveling. Thanks for being a fan!
what the hell rpm's is that thing running??? jesus christ is that thing have some ridiculous acceleration.... on dirt!! haha put some slicks on it n take it down the 1/4 mile!!!
The headhunter is going to be hard to keep up with...you are doing a great job. The sport needs more folks like yourself that put in the hours and money. Kick AK47's ass for me when you get a chance!!haha
i just read the thread on compD, i hear your running some n2o also. i guess its going to take some work to get a diesel to reliably compete with gas/alcohol trucks. might consider ditching the n2o go with twins and loads of water. seems to work for the Pro Mod pullers.
That would be thing to do but its taking an act of congress to get them to let me use one turbo. I am learning that there is quite some difference between my pulling motor and my racing motors. Thanks for the comments and keep viewing!
that thing friggin MOVES! ive seen this truck on the lucas oil "on the edge". I see youve got a little flame in the stack, what kinda EGTs does it hit?
hey dmaxking, I am guessing you saw my answer to the EGTs on compdiesel site, but if not, its hitting 2000-2100 which is WAY too high. That is my biggest problem right now. Really kind of winging it on this engine...its different than a pulling engine which i used for the lucas oil show. That engine was designed for power where I am focusing on speed on this engine.
