  • @ 8:51 he said he moved to Persia :D

    Greetings from Persia

  • This scene breaks my heart every time I watch it. :'(

  • watson: holmes how did you possibly survive? was amazing trick?

holmes: well watson. i killed him.

  • I was crying during the part of;

    Watson: HOLMES!!!HOLMES!!!HOLMES!!!

    Holmes: WAT....

  • I lost count of the amount of times I "Awwed!" out loud during watching this.

  • BRB CREYING

    And I really really want them to hug :<;

  • It´s funny that when he was fighting with Moriarty he was tousled. And when he was sitting again, he was combed again :-)

  • oh this scene made me cry ;A;

  • It's awesome, among many things, to see Holmes effortlessly, almost casually pick Moriarty up by his waist and toss him off a cliff.

"My apologies but I really don't have time for this. I rolled a natural 20 so if it please you, you can just go and fall to your death now, if you'd be so kind."

  • I like how the police just kind of walk away from the falls and nobody bothers to look for the survivors or at least the two bodies that just fell down there..I know it wouldnt work otherwise and Im not heavily criticizing the story, loved watching these since I was like 12 yrs old, in early 1990s every monday night on A&E the good ol days

  • I loved the reunion with Mrs. Hudson, especially when Holmes goes to her and hugs her.

  • Lol, been like, three years since Sherlock's been to Baker street, it's a wonder he still remembers what key to use, and that the locks are still the same. I mean, wouldn't Mrs. Hudson maybe upgrade them? If there had been anything to upgrade to? At the very least to keep people from stealing Sherlock's stuff in the dead of night?

  • @nineteenthcenturyeng I remember the book version mentioning that Mycroft was entrusted with maintaining Sherlock's rooms, I assume any lock changes or additional security measures against Sherlock's enemies were put in place by him and then relayed to Sherlock, or even at Sherlock's request since Mycroft was the only one who knew he was alive and was in contact with him.

  • @nineteenthcenturyeng I really don't think the lock would have changed, I daresay most people don't upgrade the lock on their front door too often, and Mrs Hudson had no incentive to. Also, as for how he remembered the right key...he's Sherlock Holmes.

  • he loves watson but only as would a lonely eccentric who finds a tolerant noncritical professional who can put up with his wacky loose-hinged behavior. Good roomies are hard to come by!

  • Saw this for the first time on TV this morning. Had to come watch that moment again. When Holmes goes to call out to Watson and has to stop himself... Guhhh. I could hardly contan myself, I wanted to cry and hug poor Holmes and squeal like a fangirl all at the same time. And "I would have thought I was as trustworthy as your brother." "Of COURSE you are, Watson!"

  • @Evilmike42 : Mh... I can't see the point here... It was just a joke ;)

  • The only dislike is from professor Moriarty... He is back from the Falls and furious =D

  • @CelieHardy There are quite a few non-canon novels that suggest Moriarty survived the Falls as well....

  • @Evilmike42 But these novels are non-canon. Holmes said "I slipped through his grip, and he with a horrible scream kicked madly for a few seconds and clawed the air with both his hands. But for all his efforts he could not get his balance, and over he went. With my face over the brink I saw him fall for a long way. Then he struck a rock, bounded off, and splashed into the water". Moriarty died at the falls, that it is.

  • Noone can convey more fondness in their voice than Jeremy Brett...somehow the reunion is not the same without David Burke, the former portion of the series ending with him grieving and never returning...almost as if some young part of watson died that day

  • Holmes looks so sad when he watches Watson. D: It must have been horrible, for both of them.

  • Oh... The sadness when he realises he can't call back to Watson...

  • I actually bawled my eyes out when I read the end of The Final Problem, then again when they were reunited (more out of happiness in that instance) I think this is a wonderful portrayal of the whole affair. Well done.

  • wow, serious literary discussion on youtube... It feels dirty

  • It says much for Watson that he could accept Holmes' reasoning in not contacting his closest friend for three years, to leave the illusion of his 'death' intact. Maddening as it was to Watson, it had to be as bad for Holmes.

  • omg i actually cried that was so sad when Sherlock nearly called back to Watson >.<

  • watson always reminds me of a very loyal golden retriever.

  • When Watson shows Holmes the note to me it is almost more moving than his reaction to watching Watson 'slip away' from him at the falls. Because it seems to me that he can think of no adequate response to such a gesture - hence why he makes none.

  • his clothes and shoes got dirty, poor thing.

'wat!-' *thinks better of it*. and so watson became depressed for 3 years. sherlock, you jerk. :( but we still love you, holmes, we do.

  • @allyndeimos - What a sweet post, and so apt too! :)

  • @JHandcock1111 :L thanks

  • the fight could have been better tho....... but nonetheless awesome ep

  • the best book i like is shelock holmes, jane eyre and pride and prejudice

  • @MsDarcy1995 INDEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I've always wondered, how come they never called each other by their first names????

  • @digikate813 because everyone called each other by their last names in those times. see, they were much more formal and sophisticated in old victorian england. they usually called themselves mister this or mister that. them dropping the mister just shows that they are good enough friends XD

in the recent sherlock series by BBC, it is set in modern times, and so they do call each other by john and sherlock. so much so that the name of the series is "Sherlock." just Sherlock.

  • @digikate813 It wasnt proper back then

  • my favorite Sherlock is Basil Rathborn....but, I have to say that Jeremy Brett is even better ... the emotion on this man 's face and in his eyes are wonderful... Basil was a little more controling in his facial expression but i still like him..... love this Jeremy Brett, he is my fav.. now. great actor.

  • I still need some clarification did he climb down the spot where his villan fell and climbed back over to the other spot??

  • I don't think the book Holmes would have been tempted to call to Watson like that, but it still was touching.

  • His hair is in its shiniest state in that room.

  • It must be so hard for Holmes being without his best friend. It makes me even more sad knowing that he so badly wanted to write to him, but he knew he couldn't. :(

  • urgh!! I wanted Holmes to call out to Watson! Grrrrr!! I couldn't do that to one of my friends (no offense to holmes) still yay!!! he's back! :)

  • Holmes on the ledge, watching his best friend grieve over his supposed death, was absolutely heartbreaking. He almost cried out his name, he was aching so badly to tell his friend he was okay. And the guilt and sadness as he watched Watson read the note, knowing full well that he had wounded his friend deeper than Watson had ever recieved in Afganistan. And he probably spent those 3 years with that weighing heavily on his heart. I imagine him trying so hard not to write to him.

  • I did notice in the episode "The Final Problem" that Holmes's arm lock was similar to those practised in jujutsu, this explains how he came to employ it in a battle.

  • holmes must of been very brave and have a strong sense of keeping in emotions. can you imagine how hard it is for him not to call out watson?

  • The word I would use to describe the scene in which Holmes holds his peace: poignant.

  • friendz plz vote who is better jeremy brett or robert downey as sherlock holmes

my vote goes to Jeremy brett

  • @Twery75 Yes Brett was the far better actor in this role. Downey gave good character but he himself would not argue that he was as good a Brett.

  • @D4g4marc4 thx for voting

  • @D4g4marc4 I like them both for two very different reasons. RDJ is a different Holmes...but by all means, every bit as good.

  • @Twery75 Jeremy Brett was far better! My friend and I got into a discussion on who should of been cast besides RDJ and my answer was Adrien Brody, he is believably intelligent on screen, and physically matches the original character.

  • @MrMrdswoods i thought brody would make a great holmes as well. but alas.

  • @Twery75 Oh, I wouldn't say one was better than the other. It's the interpretation of the character one could argue about. After all, Robert Downey didn't have a say in the script. And according to the script given to him, he certainly did a marvellous job. But I, too, prefer the Granada Holmes, i.e. Jeremy Brett.

  • oh jeremy brett is far better then robert downey

  • oh from 4:15 onwards its so sad

  • THE 4:15 part sherlock holmes has to keep to himself sad

  • I agree. It would have had been painful watching someone think you are dead. He does want to cry out but decides not to. Holmes and Watson were very close.. almost like brothers they were.

  • I allways thought it was strange that the old shit to Mariaty was mach for Holmes:) But still I beliving in his death...

Heh, if I was Watson, i first pass out, then when i wake up. Quite probelly I think i give my self a red hand on the chin, and then one at Holmes, and then hug him, and hold hin close to me, crying, and thanking the gods. :)

  • It must be pianfull for Holmes as well, when he sow Whatson in pain over Holmes "deaht".

  • I get why he did it, but Holmes can be so unbelievably thick when it comes to human emotions sometimes... If i were watson I'd have hugged him and then punched him in the face. LOVE Jeremy Brett

  • Jeremy Brett is the PERFECT Holmes. - all the eccentric mannerisms, the subtle nuances and gestures. Ohhh! What talent! Robert Downey is nothing compared to this...

  • who is robert downey

  • Robert downey Jr is a very famous actor who most recently portrayed Holmes in the 2009 movie. SHERLOCK HOLMES- STARRING ROBERT DOWNEY JR....AND HIS ABS

  • 1:32.... "sea turtles, mate."

  • @Hedgewolf71 Rotfl! <333

  • It takes am amazing actor called Jeremy Brett, perfectly cast, to bring an often-interpreted literary character called Sherlock Holmes to life as an utterly convincing three-dimensional human being.

How sad that JB never made a cinema film as Sherlock Holmes - that would have been sensational.

  • How hard is it anyway to beat up an old man? Holmes has demonstrated on numerous occasions that he can get rid of younger and stronger opponents - even several of them at a time. Moriarty on the other hand looks like he's gonna die on his own if you just make him run a few paces.

  • it's a pity Moriarty got such a short run in the cannon and that his fictional life has had to be re-created by other wrriters/director's - I mean he's meant to be Holme's arch-enemy and he appears in only one short story and is directly invovled but not seen in one novel

  • I agree!

  • @Peadarisback he was introduced by ACD with one purpose tho, and that was to 'kill' holmes off. so its quite understandable he only appears in one. in ACD's mind, holmes never had an arch-enemy, until that time. but i like how its such an open character and you can imagine so many things about him. even holmes is more of an open character: you dont know anything about his past.

  • I feel so sorry for Watson at THAT moment! I want to hug him!

  • There are endless theories about what "really" happened at the Falls. Some scholars say Holmes made it up to cover up three years of spying for England. Others say Moriarty went to work for England, too, in a dirty deal.

Sometimes I think the Professor meant to shoot Holmes, but Holmes rushed the him before he could draw his pistol.

  • That part when Watson is looking around for Holmes. Added with that damn piece of music. Hah, it's just so sad.

  • Oh YESH!! YESH!!

"But of course," it wuz "ownlee" Sherlock's "own" violin 'sirening-out' that INDEED SAD music !

Luv'yer Comment, "ArvindanT !" THANK YOU -- yerra reel Peach!

    [frumm'an'ol' classical violinist....(yay)... ;) ]

    Luv'th'Net! //^_^\\

  • I'm surprised he could cover one mile, let alone ten miles. Holmes was addicted to cocaine, ate very little and smoked a pipe. But why ruin a cracking good yarn!

  • Even a 4 year old can walk 10 miles in one day (or night) and he had the greatest incentive to leave the area.

  • That's true. I'm a reporter, and I once covered the case of a missing, elderly woman with dementia, and she covered almost 6 miles in mountainous terrain. Holmes could certainly do better.

  • Because he was an infrequent user of then-legal drugs, he ate what he needed to eat (and no McDonald's or Wendy's in his diet), and had plenty of adrenalin going.

Do you think WWI and WWII were fought by clean-living ascetics?

  • No weinerschnitzels in the trenches - horse, though, if you didn't get shot. Also, some units carried suicide doses, just in case. They were really just llarge doses of morphine. it was only a matter of time before soldiers and drug use were the match made in hell..

  • No, chandran878. Im sorry but you are wrong. I saw the russian series with very carefull, and i stay with my opinion. I know the Vasily was rewarded by the queen because of his portrayaed but, when was that? Because if it was before the portrayaed of jeremy brett, i have any doubt that the queen didn´t had patience to rewarded another person. but if it was after the death of Jeremy Brett, so the explanation is easy. If Jeremy was alive it would be him the rewarded, without any doubt.

  • Like i said, i saw the russian series and the only episode that i think that it was better than the granada it was "the final problem", their fight it was the best. But the other episodes it weren´t. Vasily it wasn´t so convincing in his role like jeremy Brett. That´s the true. If he was rewarde after jeremy brett, his prise was fair because he was better than Basil, but it was not better than jeremy.

  • As I remember, The person who witnessed Sherlock's survival from that fall, threw rocks at him, he did not shoot at him...

  • Holmes owned moriarty. ^^

  • does anyone know why why they replaced david burke?

  • David Burke quit the show of his own volition. He apparently wanted to spend more time with his young family.

  • 10 miles? wow. he was fit :P

  • yes holmes is more fit than batman. ^^

  • Guys i have been to borders and have seen only two copies of the original 24 holmes stories where are the rest if anyone can help me?

  • How original do you want it? There's a good hardcover you can get from Amazon, but look in the used tab, and you might find something.

  • i would off thought i was as trust worthy as your brother

OF COURES YOU ARE! just with a kinder heart

  • the books moved me. the films have moved me. will i never cease to be amazed? omg almost cried then so so moving.

  • Are you stupid or something? How there you something like that? No one is better than jeremy brett. And I saw the russian and like all the other actors, the actor did not a good character

  • Holmes nearly called out to watson. *tear*

It's so sad, they were best friends it must have been hard for him to see watson like that.

  • I agree. And I like how so many people relate to the Holmes/Watson-friendship aspect of the stories.I love that too.

The Russian Holmes series did that aspect very well, too.I recommend watching youtuber Jadomil's very poignant fan video on Holmes' death and resurrection which illustrates that in a heartwarming way, and makes you cry. It's called "The final problem - a Russian Sherlock Holmes fan vid" and has great, sad music by Händel and clips from the series. Enjoy, and shed another tear.

  • Which went first in the canon, "The Empty House" or "The Valley of Fear"???

Holmes theorized in the "Valley of Fear" that Moriarty was responsible for the 'accidental' death of Mr. Douglas in the last part.

    Did I misunderstand the story???

  • adore these two... *happy sigh* really quite sweet, seeing how badly Holmes wanted to call out to Watson, even though he knew he couldnt. and now, theyre together again, as they should be :D

  • In 1:04 and 1:21, Sherlock says that he has "knowledge of baritsu" but he is really referring to the actual hybrid martial art of Bartitsu (Conan Doyle misspelled it).

Bartitsu is a combination of boxing, jujitsu, judo, savate (French kickboxing), la canne (stickfighting), and schwingen (Swiss wrestling). This art is demonstrated when Holmes first uses a jujutsu-style lock on Moriarty, follows it up with a savate-style kick, and then finishes it with a schwingen-style throw.

  • They're quite useful for ninjas...

    Like Uzumaki Naruto???

  • when did he learn that? :) poor Holmes resurrected to please public demand ... the stories about ... did you count how many times he sighs? He travels to Lhasa & Lama + Persia ... all that blood... ha! i wonder whether the (original) public liked that

  • ...swiss wrestling.

    teehee, very appropriate.

  • I have always been so engrossed in the story that I hadn't realized until now the continuity problems in the set from "The Final Problem" to this next episode "The Empty House". Watson(Burke) finds Holme's staff and note next to the cliff on a grass outcropping then Watson(Hardwicke) finds a different styled staff on a bare rock away from the fall's edge.

I wonder if they did not return to the same falls after Hardwicke replaced Burke and found a location in England to reshoot those scenes.

  • They probably did. I didn't notice neither because I thought Eric Porter never returned and that they filmes both scenes at the Falls.

  • I love how Holmes's hair remains immaculate even after a long hike, a fight for his life, and an arduous climb up a steep and dangerous cliff.

  • @Dyslexicthemadly Like a Boss!

  • moriarty told holmes of the zeitgeist of an organization behind the gov't and all things. He told him he is getting old and Holmes has to take his place as the brain. Now holmes takes cases involving wealthy families with the organizations agenda in mind, after 2yrs of training.

  • I seriously think Moriarty's "HAAAAaaaa..." just made my evening XD

Thank you so much for putting all these episodes up ! It must take some time, but it's greatly greatly appreciated !

  • I always want to cry when Holmes is watching Watson call out for him, and then reading the letter.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Holmes loves Watson like a brother.

  • It really shows too. From how both act towards each other. I mean this in a good way mind you, like Holmes suggesting he go on alone so he would put Watson in no danger, and Watson determined to follow Holmes even to death (Final Problem) there are many more showings of this, and will no doubt be many more depending on how many stories are posted.

  • I've never seen a better pair of friends as Holmes and Watson.

  • me too its so touching

  • yes. Holmes really loves Watson. The pain in Holmes' face when he watches Watson suffer on his behalf is beautiful to watch.

  • Why the fuck would that matter?

Anyway, I didn't qualify it; so you can think of it as whatever you want.

  • Because bummers are deaf.
