HELP!! I bought the olympus vn5200 pc several months ago, and now I want to transfer the recordings to my comuter BUT the book says to MAKE SURE to use ONLY the usb cord that came with it. I have 3 cords that FIT the side of the recorder, but they are definitely different. Can you tell me what is the small writing that is on the side of your cord so that I can compare it to mine? The book said if you use the wrong one, you could erase your recordings... thanks so much!

Do you know if this recorder is good to record music? Like concerts and band rehersals?
I don't need to record studio-like quality, I just want it to deall well with very loud sounds and many instruments, without distortion and getting all the instruments. Have you tested it in any way with music?
@SoullessTemptation -- Thanks... I think. :-) ... but seriously, thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I'm glad the video was helpful. Comments like yours keep me inspired to make more support videos like this one.
Thanks buddy. Good job. When it comes to choosing this technology, well, I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure. But I am now decided. Very clear, concise and interesting presentation. I shall now order one (well, the Olympus VN-6000 here in England), having just lost the old digital recorder I've had for about five years, it was about time for an update anyway and having done about an hour's research, this one and its brothers and sisters look the best.
@freestylefilmsinc -- Yes, the recorder has a microphone input as well as a jack for plugging in headphones for listening to playback. Olympus sells a nice clip-on microphone for about $25. Or, you could get a better microphone designed to pickup from a distance.
@flandernfly -- Yes, I think so. As long as you sit up front, or near the speaker of the PA system to get a really clear recording. The recorder is set by default to use the high quality mode and high sensitivity. So, that helps.
I also had a question, this seems like a very affordable recorder, and I was wondering if it would be a good recorder for university lectures (where the distance can be quite large).
And what microphone you would recommend for this situation, thanks!
I'll be using this for hidden camera pranks if I get it. Could you test and see if you can clearly hear your voice at a normal volume if the device is in your pocket? Thanks!
@theswirlyman -- I'm guessing it would be rather muffled, and if the microphone is rubbing on something, that noise would take priority over background talking. There's a nice clip on microphone from Olympus that would help.
@theswirlyman -- In general, I'd say yes. You'd want the microphone pointed to the source and the "noise" would need to be fairly loud. It's all relative.
@KJavier88 -- Thanks for taking time to watch the video and comment. Yes, this works on Apple Mac Computers just fine. What's nice is that no special software is needed to transfer the audio. You just connect it with a USB cable, and read the files off the recorder as if it were an external drive. Depending on your planned use for the audio, you may want to import it into iTunes and then use iTunes to convert the files to MP3 or another audio file format.
@KJavier88 -- I just took a minute to use this on an Apple computer. The files are in WMA format which is for Windows. In the past, I recall being able to import these into iTunes and convert them. That didn't work today. I tried Audacity (a free audio editing program) and got a message saying that the file couldn't be opened because of "Patent restrictions." Thanks to Microsoft, your audio is now patented property of Microsoft! QuickTime can play them, but only with the free WMV player.
@KJavier88 -- Hey. I finally figured out that this DOESN"T work on Apple Mac anymore, at least not ideally. Microsoft apparently is enforcing patent rights on all audio recorded with this camera. Watch my part 2 video to learn more.
I loved the clear and detailed review and instructions. The one criticism is there was no video of the unit being ‘backed-up’ via the USB cable. That would have been helpful to see how easy or difficult the ‘back-up’ feature is. Overall, great video!
@agardner02 -- Thanks for taking time to watch the video and comment. That's a good point. Next time I'll try to show that aspect of it. Another person had the same comment/question. Basically you just connect the recorder with a USB cable and the computer (Windows or Apple) see it like an external drive with audio files on it. Just click and drag to copy the files.
Thanks very much for this video, it's helped me a great deal in deciding which model and make of recorder to go for.
Could you tell me though how much memory the recorder has in terms of hours and minutes? I noticed at one point in the video it said you had about 35 hours remaining, but I don't know how much may have already been on the memory.
Also, in what format are the recordings stored? That is, when transferred to PC, are they in the form of .wav files or something else?
@Stanley15988 -- Thanks for taking time to watch the video and comment. I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you. My recollection is that the recording capacity for most of these recorders is about 30 to 40 hours of audio in the higher quality format. The format these are recorded in is .WMA which I believe stands for Windows Media Audio. I'm able to play these files with the QuickTime player on Apple computers, but that's probably because of the WMV player plugin for QuickTime.
@resourcesforlife - Thanks very much for the reply, that's great to know. I'm looking perhaps to buy the 6800-PC, which seems to be very similar and just a newer model. I'm not sure what software to use for editing .wma files, but I'm sure I can find a way to convert it!
I was wondering how long you can keep a track paused? Also, is there any way to merge tracks or continue on the same track after you pressed the stop button?
@Phaseonegraph -- Q: "how long you can keep a track paused? Also, is there any way to merge tracks or continue on the same track after you pressed the stop button?" A: I'm right now watching the recorder on Pause and it's been over 8 minutes. It seems like you can keep it on pause for quite a while. Maybe indefinitely. I didn't notice the answer to this question in the manual. So, I guess a person just needs to test it out. You can use audio editing software to combine/merge and edit audio.
guys i want your opinion on something . i m playing the violin and i want to record my practice actually i really have to but my teacher told me not to buy something expensive but something that will record very clear do you think that a recorder like the olympus one will satisfy me ?? please answer quik if you can !! thnx
do u know how to change the setting of when i record something it would show the time of how much time I recored something instead of "remaining time?"
@joshuanesbit -- Q: How good is the quality? IS it being used throughout the video? Also can you listen to the recording through headphones while recording?
A: The quality is really quite good. Of course it's all subjective, but I think it's good. I was using the recorder at the beginning of the audio through about 1:14. The headphone jack is only for use during playback.
To download recordings to the computer, just hook the recorder up to the computer and the computer will "see it" as an external drive with audio files on it.
What program do you use to upload on G5 i Mac (not with Intel) Windows Media player doesn't down load on my computer. So far I can't upload or save any recordings.
I'm guessing the unit would connect and be seen as a USB memory stick with audio files on it. Remember that the iTunes program can be used as an audio conversion program. For example, import WAV or Windows Media audio into iTunes and then request it be converted to MP3. To do this, right click and choose convert to MP3 or AIFF.
You said you'd go and replace the audio from the video with the audio form the Olympus recorder... but then we see you play with the stop/record buttons and I can still hear your voice!!... are you SURE this audio I'm hearing is from the Olympus? I ordered a VN6200 already, based on the recording quality of this youtube video!! Was I tricked?...
@TiagooToshimi -- You're right. I used the Olympus at the beginning of the video, when I was at a distance from the camera. Then, I started using the video camera's microphone once I was doing the close-up work. I also started doing this because I was going to be reviewing the functions and operation of the recorder, which I couldn't do while recording audio at the same time. :-)
