I love Japanese Epic Samurai,Ashigaru,Daimyo War History..What can anybody give me know list of Japanese War Movie.and include lastest around 2000 to 2012
Reading the comments and having watched ran (and enjoyed it)
Whats wrong with this film? Ive seen here that people say that you should stick to watching Ran and ignore this. Well im interested in watching, anything wrong with this?
Having watched both, To me this is superior to Ran, Ran's Shakesperian narrative is interesting, but Kagemusha is deeper and more complex then the usual family betrayal story. Ran is more direct in an almost greek tragedy sense, while Kagemusha begs revisiting to search details you might have missed earlier. I think people confuse Kagemusha's lack of intensity (compared to Ran) to a more insipid film, but IMHO i think the reverse is actually the truth, it requires a different mood.
@MrBoBoTom, This (along with "Ran") were the first Kurosawa films I saw... I didn't need any American film-makers' name tagged on to enjoy MANY other films by this fine director. Worry not, Kurosawa's work can & does stand on it's own as far as influence & appreciation. :) btw, I was a kid (10 or 11) when I saw "Kagemusha"... it forever changed me, so much for the better.
This summer, I've been watching (and loving) a lot of Kurosawa's jidaigeki films. Two that I still need to see, however, are this one and "Ran". Between those two, can anyone give a suggestion which one has the best (and/or most) battle scenes? And which one is just plain better, overall?
@Manas10101 Ran for battle scenes. Kagemusha, Kurosawa specifically made sure to NOT film battle scenes directly. 95% of battle takes place off screen. Whenever you hear reviewers mention the brutality, sadness, majestic, etc. feeling.Kurosawa is doing that all without you ever really even truly seeing the most sad and brutal and majestic things most associate with war - battle. Kagemusha is a masterpiece, but lacks a message or commentary. Ran's on the other hand...yeah. You'll remember.
To be fair, Lucas didn't even direct episodes V and VI. Kurosawa wrote and directed far better masterpieces. Seven Samurai, High And Low, Ikiru, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, Red Beard, and the list goes on.
dident liked this movie. sew half and hour and it was boring. the plot was stupid the charecters shallow and had alot of dead parts. while ran is one my favorites this one was lame.
@MrBoBoTom Coppola's not necessarily a lesser film maker. Godfather/Part II, Apocalypse Now, excellent films. Coppola and Kurosawa just made different kinds of movies.
On the other hand, George Lucas is an overrated film maker who basically ripped off Hidden Fortress to make Star Wars.
@MrBoBoTom I have to disagree with you on Francis ford Coppola being a lesser filmmaker. But it is sad that people don't readily have access to these films.
@heezels Exactly, Apocalypse Now Is easily as good as most of Kurosawa's films. Many people don't realize that Kurosawa was actually a populist director who made films for large audiences to see and wasn't the most subtle or the most artistic director in japan at the time and one of the things that the Japanese New Wave directors (Oshima, Imamura, etc) were reacting against was the stately, overly mannered and traditional films of directors like Kurosawa (though he was certainly a great artist).
@MrBoBoTom Not necessarily its because Kurosawa isnt as well known here, sure he is by those who matter :) but probably not many people in japan know who george lucas or francis are either so they would do the same thing
@Thisisadummy1 what can I say? such are the ways of commercialism..traders make more money out of the creativity than artists or designers.Pokemon and anime are some examples.
@Thisisadummy1 thats because no one was willing to finance kagemusha until kurosawa came to the U.S. to look for backers. though i still hate lucas for what he did to star wars, at least he was sane enough to fund this movie.
@Thisisadummy1 Thumbs down for thinking Lucas and Coppola are inferior. Kurosawa was great, but that doesn't mean he was better than the two, or the two were better than him. Everybody has their specialties in their own ways.
Hello! The guy at 0:46 looks like Indian actor vikram!barely japanese looking.Looks cool though, but why did they choose hime to play a samurai? Its not like they are a different race or something! what is the actor's name?
@cillantro his name is tatsuya nakadai. roughly speaking, japanese is hybrid between jomon and yayoi (about 3000 years ago and two type has different face features),so that japan has a various of faces type. sorry for my poor english.
@tyannkonabeumaize Hi!Your eng is fine. Thanks for the reply I saw Kagemusha, ran online and I must say they are wonderful movies.Nakadai san looks totally unrecognisable at 0:46 especially! In Kagemusha the way he switches between the roles of the noble Lord to the funny and petty thief is very interesting.Japanese movies have some good acting. Its very interesting what you said about Japanese genetics.I also heard Japanese have some resemblance to turkic languages and genetics. Is it true?
@cillantro you mean turkish? as to language, japanese language belongs to Altaic Languages group and turkish language belongs to Ural language group. ulal and altaic were classified altogether but nowadays it is denied. as to genetics, i have no idea, sorry.
@Digatone lucas and coppola gave him money to make this movie, they were great fans of kurosawa, sadly in 1980 kurosawa had great admirers outside, but in japan they didn't wan't more epic samurai movies........ so he need money outside.....

There are few movies of the Age of Civil Wars even in Japan.
It is because money is applied too much.
This movie is helped by important figure film directors, such as Spielberg, and can be made.
Also although Kurosawa calls it a famous manager how much, Hollywood is lost in the funding ability of a Japanese movie company.
