The singing was superb. I'm intrigued, was there a conscious decision to make Marguerite look like Princess Di (especially in the final scene)? A sort of belated salvation?
Is it really from 2004? I remember watching this on TV live.... how the time goes by. But I thought this was a great production with a near ideal modern cast and conductor.

P.s. I really think that the traditional translation of the libretto was better. Bad direction again: he made Margherite look completely insane; that's not the point of the aria..she is supposed to go from madness to moments of clairity in which she asks for forgiveness(if she's crazy how could se be penitant?) and why does the devil just put his hat on and go strut out like he's going to town when Christ is risen? Hello! get him off that stage! he's supposed to flee. Like I said: SHOT!!!
@ALLHISLOVE4ME At least in this staging, Faust is still alive, albeit old again, and can repent. In most stagings Mephistopheles takes him to Hell (that instrumental finale leaves some leeway for a happy or sad ending). Arrigo Boito's "Mefistofele" adheres more closely to Goethe's original and has Margherite go to Heaven and then Faust follow many years later, after trying to woo Helen of Troy and then returning to his alchemical laboratory and growing old and contrite. Devil is 0 for 2.
Moennighorn..I do believe that you are right, but may we please be really honest??? She has an angelic voice that seems absolutely created for the part of Margherite in it's timber, substance clairity, youth and control....BUT the stage director should be taken out and shot!!! R U kidding me...If I were her I would sue him for ruining a chance at a perfect performace....because she obviously can act...she was just directed improperly. I wish I could see her in this part with another director.
She is REALLY close to popping out of that dress. Other than an almost tit out moment, the performance was fantastic. Lovely singing- very engaging.

That's my Angela, blonde wig or no. The expression and nuance given to every syllable can only be by Angela.

@oneworldguy Yes! And I actually like how grotesque she behaves; it shows the ugliness of what Faust has driven her in not sanitizing her madness.
