Pavel Chesnokov wrote this song sometime in the 1930's, during the heighth of Stalin. He wrote around 500 choral works, about 400 of them sacred. Chesnokov was a devout follower of the Russian Orthodox Church, and was partly inpired by the Communist Atheism.Russian Churches are some of the World's treasures.

This is beautiful worship music. As I stood before the iconistasis in a remote Orthodox Church in the southern mountains of Albania I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. This is the kind of music that would have been sung there!

Is that baritone lead on tour? If he isn't, he should be. You can't hardly shake a stick and not hit a few tenors (my range), be they Italian, Irish, or Canadian. That man's voice is incredible! While I admit, I don't speak Russian, the passion and depth of feeling come across clearly because of that man's voice.

Unfortunately, not many people non-orthodox people know that there are other, orthodox churches, not only Russian one. there is this special Byzantine influenced way of singing in Serbian orthodox church. Divna Ljubojevic is one of the greatest singers of thole holy songs. i recommend you to hear her sing in the language that was used in Serbia i mid ages, and prayers: veliko slavoslavlje, tebe pojem and vjeruju (serbian credo) enjoy :-D
Nor do people know that their are Orthodox, who are also Byzantine, and Catholic!
The Byzantine Catholic Church is both Orthodox AND Catholic. Our Divine Liturgy on sunday is the St. John Chrysostom Liturgy, same as you, and sometimes the Liturgy of St. Basil.
This wonderful Orthodox culture has been lost by many Europeans. The current Catholic Church - just like Christians who split from Universal in 1054. I hope that many Christians are turning away from the papal heresy and return to the bosom of the true universal church.

I went to a service in a Greek Orthodox church, it was absolutely beautiful - the choir (no awful off key singing) and the service. A bride married there in the midst of us and during another part of the service I noticed that another young girl felt safe enough to openly weep in grief. It was inclusive of all in the community and I was honoured an touched to be there.I am afraid my Christian protestant services for me have been very lack lustre and staid in comparison.
i came up with a theory that involves the book of genesis (fig leaves) buddha (sitting under the bodhi fig tree) jesus (many sayings about figs) ross horne's book (new health revolution) and science (figs are the most important source of food for fruit eating rainforest animals). i then experimented on the figs by eating mainly dried figs (same brand) for 6 years now and found cycles which i related to the numbers in psgs 11/12 of the book of revelations. this theory has gone around the world.

Unfortunately, not many people non-orthodox people know that there are other, orthodox churches, not only Russian one. there is this special Byzantine influenced way of singing in Serbian orthodox church. Divna Ljubojevic is one of the greatest singers of thole holy songs. i recommend you to hear her sing in the language that was used in Serbia i mid ages, and prayers: veliko slavoslavlje, tebe pojem and vjeruju (serbian credo) enjoy :-D

Nor do people know that their are Orthodox, who are also Byzantine, and Catholic!
The Byzantine Catholic Church is both Orthodox AND Catholic. Our Divine Liturgy on sunday is the St. John Chrysostom Liturgy, same as you, and sometimes the Liturgy of St. Basil.

This wonderful Orthodox culture has been lost by many Europeans. The current Catholic Church - just like Christians who split from Universal in 1054. I hope that many Christians are turning away from the papal heresy and return to the bosom of the true universal church.

Being Flemish, and an evangelical protestant christian, nobody can accuse me of nationalism when I say that in my opinion the most beautiful hymns and prayers are to be found in the Russian Orhodox liturgical music. This is just so beautiful !

I went to a service in a Greek Orthodox church, it was absolutely beautiful - the choir (no awful off key singing) and the service. A bride married there in the midst of us and during another part of the service I noticed that another young girl felt safe enough to openly weep in grief. It was inclusive of all in the community and I was honoured an touched to be there.I am afraid my Christian protestant services for me have been very lack lustre and staid in comparison.

i came up with a theory that involves the book of genesis (fig leaves) buddha (sitting under the bodhi fig tree) jesus (many sayings about figs) ross horne's book (new health revolution) and science (figs are the most important source of food for fruit eating rainforest animals). i then experimented on the figs by eating mainly dried figs (same brand) for 6 years now and found cycles which i related to the numbers in psgs 11/12 of the book of revelations. this theory has gone around the world.
