Yes the French helped America gain her independence, then we had what is called the Quasi-War with France soon after that ended in a stalemate. After this America stood on her own two feet. After World War 1 I consider any debts to France repaid. America did now win WW1 but we defintley came to their aid and proved decisive as the french had more than a century ago.

Napoleon was not a tyrant ... He may have been the leader of france but he was not as sadistic as Stalin or Mao .. He never let his own personal affairs overcome him. When Napoleons wife was having an affair he did nothing , did'nt stike her down or kill her lover .. He let Josephine live out of his own grace . @Puzzoozoo, Napoleon did have a secret police, but it's nothing like the Gestapo and the NKVD. They were mostly used for spying and they rarely kill anyone. Plus, Josephe Fouche didn't kill anybody during the reign of the French empire. He thwarted every royalist attempt to kill Napoleon.

How about this.
Yes the French helped America gain her independence, then we had what is called the Quasi-War with France soon after that ended in a stalemate. After this America stood on her own two feet. After World War 1 I consider any debts to France repaid. America did now win WW1 but we defintley came to their aid and proved decisive as the french had more than a century ago.
Yes America and it's defacto empire as a world superpower has only lasted 65 years atm. However,

Britain also crushed Rommels Panzer divisions in Africa and halted the advance of 10s of thousands of jap troops in Burma that could otherwise have been deployed against the U.S in the pacific. And if Britain had fallen, Their would have been no allied victory, As their would have been no D-Day...

Britain fought all 5 and 1/2 years of ww2. America only fought 2 and 1/2. And contray to popular belief (American belief) America did not "come to Europes rescue on a white stalion". It was actually Germany that declared war on the U.S, not the other way around as many Americans believe. Infact you probably wouldnt of entered at all if it want for Germanys declaration of war. And Britain was doing pretty well for the 3 and 1/2 years it stood alone....

America fought 2 and a half years (well 4 really, but i doubt you know about the Pacific War) on the European front because they were the deciding factor that won the war on the Western Front. Germany declared war on the U.S., AFTER a Japanese attack on an American naval base. Who was supplying British troops with weapons and supplies? Their betters in the United States.

His incoherent strategy to defend all of the Philippines ended in surrender at Bataan, 1942 (largest surrender of US troops in history). His ego made him unable to work with the Ausies defending New Guinea, and the ill-advised invasion of Peleliu, a Jap stronghold of no value that cost 10,000 US lives.

Haha, lol. Actully the Battle of the Somme was a British victory. contray to popular belief, the Battle of the Somme was a 4 month battle, not one day. The first day of the battle was less than successful for Britain, losing astronmical amounts of men through poor command and napoleonic tactics. This was changed over the course of the next 4 months and Britain was victorious. Pushing the Germans back 40 miles and gaining tactical positions along the front.

It would be a pyrrhic victory, if only the battle was of any major importance. I suppose that isn't the first time a few scum bags from the UK mindlessly threw their lives away (see: Battle of Bunker Hill to learn more!)

Britain lost almost half of the overall causalties in the first day of the battle. Poor command and outdated tactics resulted in massacre. Britain learnt from this first day. Releaving command from men such as General Haig. Employing new, modern tactics. And encorpartating the tank onto the battlefield for the first time in history....read on...

And without the Somme, Britain and France could not have been victorious in 1918. As it pushed the Germans back to the hindenburg line, which ultimately led to their downfall. So yes, the Somme was of "major importance". And an American takling about mindlessly throwing away lives?. Vietnam ring any bells? 60,000 dead, 300,000+ wounded, and still were defeated, with no gain to America what so ever. Now thats throwing away lives. And do you really want to talk about 1776?.

The U.S were taking devistating losses and losing 9/10 battles against the British before the entrance of France and Spain into the war. French involvement proved decisive. French victory at Chesapeake forced a British surrender at Yorktown. And Spain's involvement culminated in the expulsion of the British from Florida, securing the U.S flank. Without their invovlement, the U.S would have lost...

And even then, the empire did not last for that long. Hong Kong may have been returned in 1997, but the British Empire was over for about 70 years. It was just a matter of time before you lost India, and to a pacifist! How sad! so the British Empire lasted for about 210 years. Not so good, considering its age.

@TheGreekborn, I aknowledge that the Greeks fought very bravely, and even destroyed the Italian invasion force, and Greece was only conquered when the Germans stepped in. nobody could have stopped the german war machine during that time, and their new tactics were revolutionary, with the bliztkrieg strategy to quickly overwhelm the country.

@TheGreekborn, a lot of people, particulary the Americans and British make fun of France's quick defeat in 1940 after six weeks of fighting. Prussia fell to Napoleon in 19 days. the French won at the battles of Jena and Auerstadt, destroying the Prussian army and capturing 150,000 by war's end.

@3L24 how the hell the army was neglected in the interwar period?? how about the impenetrable maginot linemost of the german panzers of 1940 were inferior to french tanks...wwII was not long for france.they fell in 6 weeks. what makes france's quick defeat "remarkable" is the fact that the victory was won purely due to innovative strategy and tactics. napoleon didnt innovate in terms of warfare, his (early) troops were highly trained and nothing more

(waterloo), and the majority of his battles had nothing special. (eylau, borodino, jena, auerstedt, arcole). He was a master politician, but no more than a good general

His other victories weren't "that great" by what measure, exactly? I guess Frederick the Great wasn't that good if you discount battles like Leuthen and Rossbach. Alexander had his great battle at Issus, but whatever, he was using his FATHER'S WELL-TRAINED TROOPS just like Frederick.

It was him who won at Gau Gamela, Issus, Hydaspes, not his father. his father may have created the tool, but it was him who put it to good use. Genghis Khan and his sons conquered in less than 40 years an empire that dwarfs even that of alexander. Suvorov fought the swedes, the polish, the french, napoleon's generals and NEVER lost a battle. Those three guys fought their entire lives and were simply undefeated in battle.
