@JunnyICurosi There is real poverty in the US, though. It may not be as drastic as Africa, but it is enough to keep many in desperation. Mos Def's points are valid, to me. Black people have lived in the country for so long and remain disproportionately in poverty....now it's not impossible to get out (as you've said), but part of the difficulty is getting out from a legacy of exclusion, developing a mindset blacks and whites here have learned to the point of instinct.

@iigunzent I agree go to some places in Alabama and Mississippi and there are people who actually have to walk a couple of miles to fill up milk jugs for water from a water hose. But there is definitely worse poverty in Africa but try Haiti and see how bad they have it.

In my country, there are people who sell small treats from a cardboard box and earn $2.50 a day. $1.50 is spent on transportation. That leaves $1. There is NO HOPE for these people. And the police thugs will come around and harass you for selling illegaly. And guess what? There is NO WELFARE SYSTEM. If you're poor, then fuck you. Go die in poverty.

@JunnyICurosi There is real poverty in the US, though. It may not be as drastic as Africa, but it is enough to keep many in desperation. Mos Def's points are valid, to me. Black people have lived in the country for so long and remain disproportionately in poverty....now it's not impossible to get out (as you've said), but part of the difficulty is getting out from a legacy of exclusion, developing a mindset blacks and whites here have learned to the point of instinct.

While the poverty is more widespread in Africa, you have to see the point that he's making. He's making a generalized point that while we're worried about people in Africa, and trying to help them, we're neglecting OUR OWN Population. We need to worry about helping the population of poverty IN AMERICA first.

There is poverty in the US, homeless people living under bridges, young mothers on welfare trying to raise several children. You can either ignore that fact, as you have, or acknowledge it and understand it as Mos Def did....

They may be on 10 cents a day, but if 10 cents buys in their country what a dollar does in the USA, that's counted as a dollar. At the same time, there's a huge injustice having so many working poor in a rich country. I just thought we should get our facts right on relative poverty.

Mos Def is an incredible and amazing person and it's sad to see that only 12,000 people watched this interview and only 1,800 people continue to watch the rest of it. Mos Def speaks the truth and he is very intelligent, a lot of people should show respect, especially in my age group.

Any genre can be filtered through the method of Hip Hop.

I love mos def, why in all his interviews his words are slurd what the hell is he using or drinking. he has to stop a sec between each statement. well, whatever he is doing he needs to stop. and the smoking is not cool he needs to stop it. he is a very intelligent man. please stop smoking and doing the other thing cause you cant raise everyone awareness and then doing the smokin thing and doing other things.
