I think my phrasing was a bit muddled-- she gave up due to sheer exhaustion, and died as a result. Mao, on the other hand, was hanging on tooth and nail, so to speak, and was probably putting a lot of willpower into staying alive. Euphemia probably didn't have any willpower left.

@yorozuyagaren That makes more sense, but I still don't get how Mao survived. Perhaps less bullets hit him than it actually appeared. Because from what I saw, at least at first, Mao was barraged with a near-literal storm of bullets. Euphy was shot close to the heart, which explained why she didn't die at first but why she was spewing blood; Mao was shot all over with bullets. It could easily be assumed that at least one of the bullet wounds would be fatal.
