@meronmotors yes, it was an accident, but Union Carbide could have prevented the incident. Many websites detailing the disaster tell stories of badly maintained valves, inoperative warning systems and a poor history of emergency response.
People go on about Chenoybl, yet this has caused far more deaths. Dreadful that nobody has been taken into account for this, union carbide have a lot too answer for as does that murderer Anderson!!
@odsall you cannot compare Chernobyl to Bhopal! These are two different type of disasters. People still live in Bhopal, while people dont live in Pripyat. Both should be remembered.
This was an accident, there was nothing they could do to stop it. However what they did afterwards was a crime. They did have control over what happend next. They didnt do there part. Terribly sad

You have to forgive the American public. Most of them are decent people, but they are kept totally in the dark about what goes on outside of America. Most of them genuinely don't know why the world hates them. Their so-called news is very inward looking and insular and there's a very good political reason for their rulers to keep it that way. Bhopal proves this point perfectly; if Americans knew as much about Bhopal as they do BP then Dow, an American company, would be forced to do something.
@Ericthesaxon As an American, I can confirm that everything you said is correct. Growing up, and even today, I was and am frustrated by the lack of news from outside the U.S. Americans who want to know what's going on in the world often turn to the BBC.
This is awful Im ashamed to say im am 29 years old and just now learned of this horrible event.I hear a lot of people bad mouthing the usa and yes they are at fault but but please understand not all people from the USA are like this.I care what happens to people of all countries.I do not care what color or religion a person is all men women are created equal.
Does anyone else find it amazing how the americans are complaining about BP but they haven't done a thing to help this accident despite it being their fault? How hypocrticial.
The more I look into this disaster the more I become absolutely y disgusted with the attitude of the Americans. Perhaps they still blieve whqt one of their president believes that "the only good Indian is a dead one". I found it unbelieveable that the compensation offered to a bhopal victim was $580 for the death of one whereas an American shrimper was ofered $5000 for loss of earnings. All people are equal say americans I say pull the other 1 its got bells on it.
These types of crimes are typical of the global corporate empire the the U.S. is running. of course the slums were neglected in treatment because they are not contributing to the wealth of this company. they are dispensable. these corporations are accountable to no one.
Moti Singh, who was the District Collector of Bhopal at the time of gas leak, has said that Anderson was arrested at around 2 pm on December 7 but he was released the same day and flew out of Bhopal in a state government plane to New Delhi.
Singh claims the then Chief Secretary of the state government ordered him to release Anderson.
The documents show Anderson's quick release was ordered by the Central government of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. With elections weeks away, the Centre felt the Madhya Pradesh government was overly eager to score political points against Union Carbide.
Warren Anderson, former chairman of the American parent company Union Carbide Corp responsible for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, was released after being arrested on December 7 that year on the Central government’s orders to Madhya Pradesh.
@ToonandBBfan you are absolutely right. please remind people whenever you can. i do and yet americans get all quiet and don't respond to any of my points. they never did have a sense of irony did they? difference is, bp will pay 20 billion in damages and dow chem never paid anything. no wonder america is hated.
Union Carbide responsible was arrested for only a few hours. No victim has seen a dollar up to now. No one was judged as guilty. And it was not a disaster but the biggest negligency ever caused by a serie of facts taken to save money in the production. A total shame.
BP will be held responsible by US government for current oil spill in mexican gulf. This is international law. What about law, justice and fairness when it comes to Bhopal and Union carbide? Why don't same rules apply? Where is the FKN UN, US/Indian Govts? Lying hypocritical SHITS, hang the bastards.
@markwessex Because it is India we are talking about. Of course BP is penalized for besmudging the US coastline. Who gives a damn about the dying Indian people who were living in the ghetto. Sounds cynical, doesn't it? I am sure that is exactly what those f***s in charge were/are thinking and why the issue is not being forced. Those responsible have no morals. They have to pay for what they have done! They need to take responsibility for what they did.
If you can't imagine this happening in the US think again, it almost did. A fatal explosion occurred on Aug. 28, 2008 in Institute, WV. at the Bayer CropScience Chemical plant. This deadly explosion could have easily eclipsed Bhopal India. Bayer CropScience is the only chemical plant in the World that makes and stores enough MIC daily that can cause this kind of mass holocaust.
I live 8 miles from that plant.. It's only a matter of time. Corner cutting, poor maintenance, name it. The worst part is that there is no real over site there, they get to police themselves.
And why there is no info about this in US liberal TV? Because it's f$%^&^%& not liberal. it's full of lies and sh^&*&
They say that AlJazeera is showing only terroristic stuff. They say that to stop people from watching it, because it's one of the last sources of true informations
The images of this catastrophe are worse than those of the scariest horror movies even 25 years later. It's outrageous how corporate organisations refuse to take their responsibilities. The disaster itself was due to greed related neglegance and even after 25 years the abandoned plant has not been cleaned up and its premises have not been decontaminated. There are still dangerous chemicals present at the site which leak into the environment at an ever increasing rate. DOW, clean it up!
Yes, shareholder percentage. A lot of people point to Dow Chemicals, an american company that owned the remaining 50.9%, only however. All these companies have standards and procedures. Plantoperators should always use their checklists and managers should never overrule technicians.
Correct, but that doesn't mean DOW has no responsibility for what happened and for cleaning up the place in the aftermath. If there are standards and procedures they must be maintained and corrective measures taken when necessary. This was, as far as I know, not the case here: the installations themselves were in a bad shape. Of course the indian state shares part of the responsibilty, they should have inspected the factory and taken action but DOW simply runs away from its responsibilities.
The facts are really disheartening. Why aren't the ones responsible, be responsible? The person behind this is free and enjoying an almost carefree life.
Horrible! Carbide's ignoring of vital local publics resulted in wide-spread anti-Carbide sentiments in India and beyond. Its single major failure was in communications and public relations at the local level. With no spokesperson at the scene, and with the Indian subsidiary UCIL completely muzzled. Think about it.
When are we going to stand up and stop the madness. If we don't things will only get worse! All life is equal and one. This is our DESTENI. There is no free choice when it effects another life.
DOW has still not cleaned up, DOW has still not properly paid the victims. Our National news does not report on this story because they are controlled by the Corporates. Shut offl your TV.
Power to the Yesmen for bringing this story to some light.
This film is great at showing how the madness of Corporate Greed destroys life in such terrible ways. The murdered and no one went to jail.
Unfortunately this film does not state the gross negligence and safety violations that actually led up to this tragedy that Union Carbide Now owned by DOW is responsible for. This film makes it sound like an accident. It was no accident, it was just waiting to happen due to lack of care for life, all for money.
my heart goes out to all those affected by the bhopal tragedy. There has to be accountability. Just because Union Carbide is a corporation and not a person doesn't make it exempt from punishment
Big companies are the ones destroying this world; they just pay off the government and then they make the citizens think we are the ones poisoning the planet. So blind the world is..
the thing that disgusts me the most about this tragedy is that like 10,000 peopkle died and most americans dont give a fuck theyr too busy crying theyr eyes out about 911, when only 3000 people died that day 3000! thats probably about how many people die in africa every day from starvation, diarrhea and other preventable diseases

Bhopal used to be known throughout south Asia for it's waterworks, architecture and beauty. It was one of the most prosperous princely states even during the British domination of India, ruled by the "Begums of Bhopal."
Union Carbide is responsible for its plant, but it is the modern Indian government that is truly responsible for annihilation and destruction of this formerly great city. India won't stop until it destroys completely its Islamic inheritance.
