you are aware that this song is part of The Downward Spiral which is a concept album? It tells the story of a man who tears every layer of society off of him and sees how everything he has is empty and hollow. He progressively descends into self loathing and depression, attempting to become a God in his own right (hence Closer, Ruiner, etc) while struggling through the cold emotionless side of himself and in the end he commits suicide. It doesn't really support and beliefs.

This song isn't about Christianity being false. At least not entirely. It's about HIV and how Christianity tends to call it a punishment, and Trent's fear of obtaining it. If anything it's rejecting God, not denying his existence. Get your facts straight first before posting.

If you're going by the Ruiner interpretation of the album, this isn't about denying God, this is about defying him. The man no longer wants God in his life so he removes him and takes his place in the Ruiner, using sex, such as in Closer- "You get me closer to God"

@Karakuri139 I really like that explanation. I always heard that closer wasn't really about sex but about getting high.. if you think about it all the lyrics in closer could relate to gettng stoned but only trent knows for sure
