  • Jonah and Niniveh: Two kindergarten stories. Why doesn`t the bible give straithforforward instructions how to lead a holy life. instead of all these silly impossible fairy tales ?

  • @lizazoon Sometimes, you can learn a lot from these fairy tales. Aesop's Fables as one example. The idea is to develop a personal relationship with God, not check off a to-do list of holiness.

  • @relussier If I want to learn from a fairy tale, I prefer" Swowwhite and the 7 dwarfs" It as more morality than the bible.

  • @lizazoon Non-fundamentalist Christians, read the Bible through the lens of Jesus. This curbs all the genocide and sacrifice in some parts of the Bible that Christ challenges and saves us from. The Bible is in conversation with itself, and the Church is part of that conversation. The real question is: where has the moral thinking ended up in the Church (for the Bible is really square one), and does it make sense?

  • @lizazoon Much of the bible does not seem to follow the "love thy neighbor" thought process, but we can safely say that it is the codex of our faith. Doesn't it seem that dismissing it because of some seemingly far-fetched stories is rather rash?

  • @relussier Not a far fetched story:Exodus 32:26

Moses, said to them, " The LORD God of Israel commands you togo through the camp, killing your relatives, your friends, and your neighbors." The men of the Levi tribe followed his orders, and that day they killed about three thousand men. Moses said to them, " You obeyed the LORD and did what was right, and so you will serve as his priests for the people of Israel. the LORD has blessed you

  • @lizazoon Take from this what you will. I will thank God for Christ and the redemption of all mankind. I will follow God. The bible depicts the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, the will of God the Father, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; therefore, I treasure it, learn from it, and find it meaningful in my life. It may not be perfect, but I pray that I please God by studying what scripture we have and doing my best to learn and grow through Christ. Amen.

  • @relussier: I thank you you for a real christian attitude. Believe in miracles, believe all you want, but don`t try to prove impossible bible stories with science.

  • I loved listening to you Father Matthew. I wish my parish priest was a more engaging homilist like this. Rest assured that If you ever came to Canada I would track down your parish just to hear you preach :) God bless. Your fan, Michael

  • The children can't be naive enough to believe that it took three days to cross the city of Nineveh.

  • The story is a parable, very stylized. Children don't read the Bible like fundamentalists. They have to be taught to do that.

  • I'm glad to hear it, because there's a lot of stuff in the Bible that could turn the children into real sociopaths if they took it literally.

  • amen

  • Does enybody wants to come with me to the father Mattews funny show.I just got the ticket.man its funny. If anybody is interested let me know, its located in the church.Lets go have some fun!

  • Nice to see you at work!

  • Why do you think Ninevah repented for such a small message?

Bath yourselve in stomach acid for 3 days with no getting out of the acid & you'll look convincing.

Jesus said, "No miracle will you receive except the miracle of Jonah for as Jonah was 3 days in the belly of the whale so shall the son of man be 3 days in the Earth.

Jesus was dead for 3 days. Guess how long Jonah was dead.

They say talk to a 3rd grade level regardless the listeners. You seemed to prove that as good advice.

  • Surplice and tippet, eh? You gotta play it old school every now and then- wear your cap next time!

  • Tippet or Canterbury?

  • Either an Oxford cap or a Canterbury cap works- though I am partial to the Canterbury cap.

  • Hi CommieThreat, long time no see!

  • Father Matthew, Was this sermon at Morning Prayer? I am curious because of the way you are vested. I can understand why we have Eucharist every Sunday nowadays, but I miss the sung liturgy and service music of Morning Prayer. This is a good sermon.

  • It sounds like you need to discuss with your rector using Daily Morning Prayer for the Liturgy of the Word at the Eucharist. That is very legit.

  • 2 cameras. Are you guys broadcasting now?

  • We've been webcasting our sermons for the past three years. You can also watch the service live, if you like.

  • A fairy tale is a fictional story that may feature folkloric characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and talking animals, and usually enchantments, often involving a far-fetched sequence of events.

  • What is a parable?

  • Do you ever read any Joseph Campbell, Fr. Matthew?

    Just curious.

  • a story that teachs a lesson .

the bible has lots of parables

  • fantastic!

  • Cool haha, was that your sermon?

  • That was the "Children's Welcome," a short talk that one of the clergy gives right before the children process out to go to Sunday School. The sermon comes later and was about 15 min.

  • Oh, ok, at my parish the children are already in sunday school and they don't come in until communion.

  • Somehow, when I woke up this morning, I knew you were going to post a story about Jonah.

No idea how I knew. I'm in Florida. It just...popped into my head!
