  • Thanks, I have thought about switching to sumo instead of a regular DL. I knew there was a variation to the DL that put more emphasis on the legs, but as I was standing in front of my bar now I wasn't really sure how to perform it with correct form. I need more power in my legs, lately my routine has become a bit too upper body focused.

  • Sorry girl, your form isn`t really goodhere :S. Your stance is too narrow. So you dont manage too put ur hip & but in the optimal position imo.

  • I was doing sumo deadlifts to see how they feel. A guy comes over: "thats not how you do deadlifts, those are going to make you're knees explode"

    I say: "its called a sumo deadlift, i'm just trying it out"

    He says: "you're not a sumo"

  • legs don't really look wide enough to call this a sumo deadlift. this looks like a regular deadlitf just with your toes pointed out.

  • @firestrix10 disagree! traditional DL is feet shoulder width apart she has hers way more than that making it a sumo lift.

    Do you make any special considerations for maintaining your waist-to-hip ratio? I glanced at your other videos & noticed you only seem to lift for lower body & do functional and/or bodyweight exercises otherwise. Is this the case?

    If so, with what specific exercises--if any--do you train abs/upper body? I want to build my hips & glutes, but I'm already top heavy and & don't want to gain ANY size in my arms or shoulders.

  • This vid created quite a stir! Conventional wisdom implies that unless u can lift 2.6X yr bodyweight like Nia here maybe you should NOT criticise her style. Indeed: Various views expressed here made me wonder who was right but I didn't know enough to "weigh in" then. However now about 6½ months after I started lifting again I've gotten my deadlift up to 320: see my latest vid. I'd appreciate feedback: Since my height/weight is similar to Nia how come my stance is different?? Who's 'right' here??

  • Nice video. If you watch carefully she has a major hip imbalance. Look at the amount day light between her right arm and side and her left arm and side. Then look at how much leg you can see on each side. Great form, but needs to see a chiropractor.

  • @Tazza17 Great comment but you need to see an optician or at least work your angles out better. Sure her right hip is slightly tenser (everyone favours one over the other) but its far from being a major imbalance. She's not being filmed from square on so of course theres gonna be asymmetry in what we can see. Most importantly she doesn't collapse at the knees and her hips drive through smoothly. Solid technique!

  • I think that at the bottom position your hips are too high that way your torso is bent forward more than 45 degs I think that your torso should be more upright so you can be stronger and there is less stress on your spine at least I do it this way

  • @youngthugga87 Like I mentioned previously, every person is different. Because of my limb and torso length along with my leverage, I am stronger with my hips higher up at the start. However, some people are stronger with the hips lower because of limb/torso length, etc.

  • @youngthugga87 I've always thought that more upright torso and low down start engages the quads where as hips back and higher works the hamstrings, butt and hips. Guess its down to preference and where your natural strength lies as to which is better.

  • Actually I can lift more weight by leaving more distance from the bar before bending my knees.

    Your style puts me in a position where I feel I cannot apply my power, much like in a conventional deadlift.

    You start with your torso very close to being parallel with the floor.

    Ain't that the exact reason why so many people ditch conventional style and switch to Sumo?

    A more upright torso at the start of the lift.

  • @christosswc Some people are more upright at the start of the lift, but I personally have more power that way. It all depends on your biomechanics, limb length, torso length, etc.

  • @tonylee1973 No, never tried a kettlebell. I usually use the KB for swings and snatches.

  • Nice short instruction on the deadlift...all your troubleshooting is pretty dead on...I'd just add keeping your traps active so that your scapula are pulled back and don't sag as you pull off the ground.
