@Smennyboy off course I dont know everything on the concept of infinity, but I was looking for some one deep insight that can put you in thought and trigger you to think about something you haven't before. That part did not happen, and it was why I was frustrated after wasting an hour watching the thing. I guess it mostly depends on goes through your mind while watching. so I envy that it worked for you x)
@ABONESR You really do know what you are talking about then, sorry to doubt you :) I have been playing with the idea of infinity for quite some time, so I was watching this to broaden my horizon on the subject and learn a bit more of the science behind the theory. I learned quite a bit, and I found it extremely interesting. I wont say that I am anything close to understanding it, but I feel like I got a little closer after watching it and doing some serious thinking afterwards.
@Smennyboy It is crazy thoughts. in the video they talked about scientists commuting suicide bcuse they couldnt come to 'terms' with such concepts. is it real or not? It's there in physics astronomy and math, but do you really want to deal and use something you cannot understand or comprehend?
I had two options: 1- live with it and use it but don't imagine its existence. 2- Deny that it's there. You saw that prof in the video who says infinity+1 =0 ? haha.. it's like that
@ABONESR It most certainly is ! No matter how hard you try to imagine it or begin to understand how it can be real, something just says "no", it can't be like that. I hope one day we will find the answer, but maybe we are not even capable of understanding it, no matter the proof. The thought of there being an infinite number of other planets just like earth, with an infinite number of "me" is quite insane. It questions life it self, and I suppose it could be quite dangerous
infinity seems infinitely pointless and leads to discussion that goes nowhere because no one understands it. interesting none the less, perhaps infinitely
The multiverse could be finite but tending towards infinity, i.e. it could be constantly branching off as branes collide (generating new universes) but still being finite in extent - it could grow perpetually but as we all know from seeing this, you can always add more. Each new universe creates its own space that remains separate from other branes in the higher dimensional multiverse (the 'bulk' if you will).
I once had an experience on DMT where my consciousness split in two, then four, then eight, sixteen, thirty-two, and so on and so forth until there appeared to be infinite copies of myself, at which point the whole array suddenly became one consciousness again.
space being infinite may not necessarily lead to an infinite number of copies of all possibilities: this comes from the presumption that the configuration of matter within space is completely random. It could be that outside the observable universe, that there is the same thing repeated an infinite number of times.
I think I understand most of this documentary except this last bit about cosmological inflation, why does that theory lead to infinte multiple universes?
@Bice404 I think they might refer to the concept that the big bang was produced by the collision of two 'earlier' (a rather meaningless phrase when considering what came 'before' spacetime) universes. The energy from the collision drove inflation, so looked at like that inflation becomes evidence for multiple universes. I'm probably have it wrong though. If you're interested, get a copy of Paul Davies' book The Goldilocks Enigma.
@eruptoin by definition a creator is outside of the whole infinite multiverse thing so no. but it wud be possible to have a universe where a god like being exists. however this being wud never be the diety of christinity, islam etc cos THAT diety is supposed to be outside the entire infinite multiverse superstructure and the creator of that superstructure itself.
@eruptoin u dont have to. the point u made about god was really interesting it actually made me think about it for some time , that brain of urs is definitely comming up with interesting thoughts - keep em comming !
Having only a total finite doesn't seem plausible. When the end is reached then returned to the beginning, the action could just repeat over and over and over and over........... and over and over and over...... ∞. I strongly believe this is all a never ending fractal. and that infinity is inescapable.
Thanks for posting ! Good stuff. Great overview of our POV on infinity. Sticky and slippery at the same time. This is how we think and try to understand as an (I) and why we fall short. POV is what keeps us from knowing what is. To stand separate, perceiving, deserning and judging has it's limits. It implies your IGNORING what you do not yet perceive. Yes? Using the finite to understand the infinite is a losing game. Knowing is possible, but not with a POV.
im glad i have this information in my brain to ponder on for the rest of my existence in this current conscious human form. something to ponder deeply on my next chemical-adjusted mind expansion. fare well my fellow humans, enjoy and appreciate your current atomic configuration and ability to ponder such wonders!
I wasn't saying "you" as in the person who posted it. I'm VERY glad you did. Posting a video doesn't automatically conclude that the up-loader agrees with everything in that video. I should have said "they're" - I have no way of knowing your thoughts on the subjects. I believe I'm only referring to there "conclusions" that if the universe is infinite that there "must" be multiple you's - isn't is possible that the infinite universe could continue with nothing else out there ...
we can find connection to the future via mathematical probability, for if you ask why are we born now against all the eternal time ahead in the universe? well the universe must not be eternal or the odds of being born so early on would be extremely unlikely, so this shows that mathematical probability may not be bound by time or maybe it is just projections but it could also show the universe may end.
@deanmullen10 Probability doesn't work like that. If the universe is infinite in time as well as space, there is no such concept as early or late, and being born at any period in time is just as likely as any other, even if the probability of being born in any one of those points in time is indeed incredibly small.
maybe deres an Infinite number of Multiverses making up the MultiMultiverse thenAn infinite number of MultiMultiverses making upThe MultiMultiMultiverse or simply the Mx3 verse , then you have the Mx4 verse, all the way onto the Mx Infinity verse, then georg cantor's work shows there is hierarchy of Infinity thus u have M x Infinity x Infinity verse, M x Infinity x Infinity x Infinity (& onto an Infinite number of Infinite x Infinites) verse. & our universe has infinitely small universes within
I believe that they were wrong about there having to be an infinite amount of monkeys in an infinte universe. It also doesn't mean that the Roman Empire still exists. That it a different concept, the concept of different dimensions, in which multiple universes would exist.
Still a great documentary though, it can really get one's mind going.
@likemba22 I didn't say that. I asked you what evidence you have for that, and since I'm almost 100% there is none, I feel justified calling you an idiot.
1.the doomsday is occurring on a planet with people identical to humans.
2.for no reason everyone in the world stops and starts singing a song in perfect sync then get there stuff get going again and continue on, not knowing why they did it, and against all odds did it in perfect sync every single person.
3.a copy of me is lifting the world cup trophy another winning the lotto somewhere else.
4. a very unlikely miracle is occuring stunning the world
This upload is brilliant. I could watch this all day. The first verse of the bible states In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Beginning= Time
Heavens= Space
Earth= Matter
verse 3 Then God said "Let there be light"; and there was light"
In my opinion the universe is infinite, yet this scripture makes me think, "But will God indeed dwell on earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you.
One more thing, the inflation theory means that any given moment our universe is finite! cause it is inflating, so its getting bigger: every second its bigger than the previous second which means the universe is finite at every moment, but as it inflates faster than speed of light we can never see or reach its boundary so its infinite from our point of view, but finite at every moment... hmmm what u think?
Would also love to know the song at 0:58!! What a fantastic scene. This is now one of my favorite BBC Horizon episodes. They really get better and better.
@mindinflow Excuse me but I am not sure how a possibility of anything being the case can happen in an infinite universe when there is a possibility of the universe not being infinite... also how can there be exact replicas of us when you can look infinitely into what makes us, us and never find any discrete data to form a replica of us let alone other stuff.
If everything is possible in such theoretical framework. Is it logical to assume that eventually some kind of intelligence could emerge which will create man?
maybe the universe is round like earth ? would make sense with all the black holes and instant travel , 500 years ago people thought earth is flat , why assume the universe is flat or box shaped?
well the problem is that they try to understand if the universe is infinite or finite which implies that you have to be in some sort of construct like a box or sphere. why not think about the universe like a big ball which we sit on ? so when you travel after a while you get turned inside out and end up at your starting point. something like in the 2 matrix movie where neo was at the train station and when he ran through the tunnel he came back the other side .
if we accept the inflation theory then inflation has been happening in all directions, so take a atom and inflate it, it will become a big and bigger sphere
@armsoo it loses me where i see that the universe is only 13.7 BY's old unless inflation is Infinite in speed how could it make the universe Infinite, or is the speed of inflation Infinite M/PH?
@The2012phenomneon I don't know if the following is making sense from cosmological point of view but i think The Universe as a whole expanded very fast right after bing bang for a short period of time and then slowed down, but still inflated with a high speed. Now if the universe expands faster than speed of light then we can not see the edge of universe no matter how long has passed, the light will never reach to us from the edge,so it's finite at any moment but infinite from our point of view
@The2012phenomneon I ran out of characters in last comment: So if the universe is expanding, then certainly it is finite, cause there is a limit to it, it has edges, it has ends which expand! But from our perspective, as we can not see the edges (because of the limit for speed of light) we see at as an infinite thing. Its the same infinity plus one problem i guess, universe is infinite (from our point of view) but expands becoming a bigger infinite, and then again expands and becomes bigger!
