thats hardcore!!! lifeforce probably my favorite shooter ever. lol. i like how you said "the best nintendo game i've ever seen" thats what i thought too.
I loved the co-op on this game. As a kid I would use every power up immediately just to keep addin speed. It got to be prettty ridiculous but a whole lot of fun!!!
nice video, but a little tip, in any future game videos like this with your 2009 self putting commentary on the old stuff. Turn up your voice a little more, sometimes the laserfire in the game drowned you out.
And, so you sent letters to this guy Jason for a long time, but how often did you actually see him? Just curious.
Not sure which part you're talking about, but the dates of all the segments are in the video, with some additional info in the description about when everything was originally recorded.
Oh, I meant the part between the 2002 footage and the 1991 footage where you were talking about how you said audio letter instead of video letter, from 2:08 to 2:26.
I think the other parts are more audible because I noticed the same thing. I recorded them back in September, with the game audio mixed in with the commentary as I did the commentary (so I can't separate them and re-mix - it was just easier to do it that way) so I'm not going back to re-do them at this point.
Hay man, this is what I was really looking forward too. I loved how you added your new cometary over the top of the game play. I find it really hard to watch games like this without cometary. Grate stuff.
Yeah, as much as I don't mind watching the old game footage "raw" I figured adding in a commentary would make it more interesting for everyone. :) Plus, it gives me the chance to go a bit more in-depth with the review aspect, and toss in some reminiscing too.
The original R-Type was released in 1987. Salamander, the game this was based on, was released in 1986. The original Gradius (which this is a spin-off from) was released in 1985. The powerup systems are actually completely different between the the Gradius/Salamander games and R-Type. this type of shooter game was actually a GENRE of games, so there were a lot that had similar looks to them at the time. But gameplay-wise, the Gradius and R-Type games were two of the best.
That must have been an epicly long video! I recorded a few parts of SMB3 too, but never did a full playthrough. I think I just recorded some of the later levels because I knew I wouldn't have the patience to get to them all the time. :)
I still play the NES-- i love old school video games,im not much into the new stuff...games just arent the same! I love to see all these old vids they are really cool =)
I like both, but definitely lean toward the old school. I find modern games seem more about pushing you along form one objective to the next and moving the story along, whereas old school games were all about the CHALLENGE! I love to see how these hardcore Halo freaks fare with a game like this...muwhahahaha! Those old games were HARD! but they kept you coming back for more, full of gritty determination to get past that part that kept killing you... :D

I still have Life Force on my working NES. It really was a very enjoyable game, especially for multiplayer. I remember cheating through the game by using the 30-lives code. It's weird how one can still remember exactly what the code is even to this day - but the stuff learned in school at the same time is hardly there at all. I guess the mind makes some sort of calculation as to what info is more likely to be needed further down the line. ;) I love the idea with the VCR-hook up btw.
Nice! I am truly jealous! Oh, as for the 30-lives code...take a peek at my remaining lives in this level. ;) This game was actually my introduction to the now legendary "konami code". Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start :D
Alas, no. I never actually owned one - my friends would either bring over theirs, or we would rent one for the weekend. Always WANTED to get one of my own, just never got around to it. The only system I actually owned from that time period was a Sega Genesis/Sega CD system, but that was in 1993.
Oh, and MAN do you ever NEED that code for Lifeforce. There are parts of that game that can be just brutal...hehehe I'm sure I never would have been able to finish it without it.
I'm just getting back into my video making stride now buddo, I will be making as many videos as possible this week, and F.A.S is definately on that list. =D
and he recorded it in SP!!! very hardcore. thats what i do to preserve the quality of the awesome graphics of the game back in the days.

Yeah, I know about the audio. You can hear everything well with headphones.
Jason and I would see each other a couple times a year, when I would go back home for holidays, summer, etc.

Wow. February 18th, 1991. That's the day before I was born.
That creeps me out, but is totally awesome.
Haha.

sweet stuff. for the next seg you should turn down the video game audio just a hair. i like your commentary but its sometimes hard to hear.

You know I hook up video game consoles to my DVD burner so I can burn gaming footage to a disc.
Nearly the same as what you did with VHS.
Just with different media. = )

Of course. And if you would have made it to the final boss without a cheat, the big final escape sequence would definetly have been impossible.

Cool retro vid. The look has changed a bit over the years, but the personality and style is the same.
I used to record some of the Streetfighter Tournaments my friends and I organised on VHS. Alas the tapes have long since been lost.
