You're better off as a kit player having not played in DCI. Those guys make for awful kit players, they get force fed chops and it makes everything they play ultra rigid and wanky.
Thanks so much! Yea, I've seen Bill Bachman; he's awesome! I would love to get involved with some sort of marching group like that. People in DCI are absolute machines. I think I may have already aged out of DCI (I turned 21 a couple months ago), but it would still be great to work with those kinds of people anyway.
Wow, thanks, man! They don't have DCI (or anything similar) near where I live so I've never done any marching or anything before. The closest I've ever come is trying to play Mitch Markovich snare solos, haha.
that's what i love about playing ostinatos it gives me a high especially when i try to go into polymeters or metric modulate over ostinato's...and when im done it feels like i just meditated to some tribal music with sage flowing through my lungs
My legs are just doing a basic alternating single stroke pattern (16th note subdivision) and moving between the four pedals (a bass drum and hi-hat each). I start with my right foot on the downbeat (RLRL) on the bass drum. The next two strokes are on the two hi-hat pedals. The fourth stroke is with the left foot on the bass drum; then the pattern repeats. The strong points of the groove are the bass drum strokes on the downbeats and the 16th right before it ('a'), which is a samba ostinato.
It is the foot ostinato used in drumset sambas and bossa novas. I'm not really playing the classic drumset samba hand patterns on top of it but the "a 1...a 2...a 3" etc. part on the bass drum is there.
That's true, I'm not really playing the samba hand patterns or anything so it's not a completely authentic samba. However, the bass drum part I'm playing is the one used in sambas, bossa novas (at least the modern drumset interpretation of it).
Great drumming mate..!

Doing these things require so much concentration. So much you get in a trance.

Matt, when people are saying it's not samba, it doesn't mean that you're not playing samba hand patterns. That much is very, very clear.
What people are more likely referring to, is that even if you were playing a more ordinary samba pattern with your hands, it's just not samba.
