  • These look amazing but its alot of work for some kid to come vy and steal it

  • @RedDragon0719 That's true. What helps is the rebar and the plywood base holes (for ground stakes) make it very resistant to someone trying to do a grab and go. They'd have to work hard and take time to steal it. But, if they do - can always make more :)

  • this is AMAZING!!! too advanced for me mostly bc i dont have the space or tools but this is very very nice!!

  • @googooberries Thank you. Hopefully soon you can give it a try.

  • Hey Terra, One other question. After using the surform shaver did you sand it with sand paper also? Mine are very rough still. Or does the Drylok cover it? I'd really like to not have to sand them (I have 6 started and several other projects as well) because time is ticking here! Thanks!

  • @living4serenity I never have until the last tombstone (Blackbeard). I like the rough edges that the shaver gives you. Drylok tones that roughness down failry well and in the end looks like stone to me. If you want or need something smoother you can sand it down a bit. I did for the Blackbeard stone becuase I wanted it to be smooth like marble.

  • You have the best idea going on all of you tube, as far as anchoring the tombstone with the pipes is concerned. I just completed a tombstone using our techniques and I will have to post a link.

  • *your*

  • @blbarchi Oh good it's helping you. The idea came from desperation. The winds here in Kansas are epic in the fall.

  • @Scaryladyvideos

Tara, Here is my Tombstone video. More to come!

  • Scary, where did you say you got the skull from?

  • @Eveningkiss Thanks. Got the skull from Fright Theatre.(theatre with an re). They're on the web. Same place I got Boogedy.

  • how long does it take to make one of these and wow do you do an amazing job on them.

    great job!

  • @TheMreverything10 It takes about 12 hours total time. But, because you have to allow several overnight dries, it usually takes about a week.

  • Absolutely spectacular!!! Your not an artist? I think you are WAY off on that! I do have one question. Do you think that caulk would work for covering the seems instead of wood putty? I used caulk but I haven't gotten to the paint and such yet. So I am hoping it works because it is MUCH cheaper and I have a small budget right now. But I also don't want them to look like crap. But thank you so much for the great how-to!!! I am VERY jealous of your workshop too!

  • @living4serenity Thank you :) Caulk will work fine. I've grabbed it if I'm out of the foamboard glue so you'll be good to go. I have noticed that after two seasons (out in the elements a total of about 40 days) the seams will separate a bit. Can't remember if it's more prevalent with the foamboard glue or the caulk. But, no problem still just put another bead on it and paint over with Drylok. If the fresh gray stands out, then dry brush it also with some white.

  • @Scaryladyvideos I used liquid nails to glue them so hopefully they will not come apart but I am not opposed to fixing them. They won't be out long becuse my neighborhood has a bunch of destructive kids so they will only go out on trick or treat day when I can watch them. So I guess 40 days = 40 years for mine! LOL! Well until I move or the kids get parents who make them behave. I'm sure I will be moving before the latter happens.

  • @living4serenity I've used Liquid Nails too and so far, they are holding up great as well :)

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot There is PVC pipe inside the tombstone. Rebar is pounded into the ground and the tombstone slides right over it and into the PVC pipe. As an added protection, two corners of the plywood base has holes in it and string is tied to tree stakes. Not sure that protects against the wind in-as-much as it's good protection against thievery. You don't see the string/tree stakes in the grass.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot Thanks and the other plus is they don't blow away in the wind :)

  • By the way I became a member of the site you go to. HF - I added you to my friends! (my one and only friend! LOL) I gotta learn how to work around in there yet.... my screen name is thepartypros in case you wanna try to find me first.....

  • @thepartypros Gonna go find you over there now. Thanks for joining :)

  • You stated, you are not that great of an artist, you under estimated yourself. I saw your demon horse and I was very impressed.

  • @coolduder10 Aww thanks :) After completing the horse, I'm gettting more confident in this artistic stuff. Scary as hell but love the thrill :)

  • Great video, that tombstone was awesome looking.

  • @mmorales105 Thanks :)

  • Cont of prev post: I do not wanna do that font (at this point) But I stayed clear of some neat font choices because I found when I used the dremel I could really do fat letters when it got to the tip or end of a letter in a word. Because I dont know how to make a pointy end! :-(

So as I asked, As I move dremel to and end like your letters... Do I lift dremel up as I get to the end? Or do I use a "special" bit? model # for that if different? THANK YOU!

  • @thepartypros No, I do not lift the Dremel at all. It's at the same level throughout Dremeling the epitaph. To get super pointy tips, you have to stop Dremeling and use an eXacto knife. But, I have no problem with how mine turn out. I don't even notice that there isn't a sharp edge. Looks sharp to me when you are 3 feet away. Hope that helps. Hey, not sure if you've checked me out at my home forum but I practiaclly live there and have a blog and lots of pics: HalloweenForum. I'm Terra

  • Ok so far things are looking great! (re: your reply about the bit used in the video) The bit you showed to link to I do not have.... I have been using something sort of like that but mine has maybe 1/4" of area to route with on the bit. My first grave is glued and painting is next. -- I noticed your font is funky and letters come to a point. Did you use the same bit to do that part? Do you raise dremel when gettin to tip of a letter? Any suggestions.... on how to handle dremel etc.

  • Heheh... no, just really good at cheatin' Seriously, thank you so much :)

  • "I'm not that great of an Artist..."

You're a liar!! haha I've seen your work and you are an amazing artist!!!

  • When your cutting the 2 section to lay the pipe in between... What is the tool you are using to "channel out" the areas you lay the pvc in? (suggestion: very great videos! except when you come to a tool such as this. maybe say in clear details what it is and maybe where you buy one..) Just a thought....

  • @thepartypros It's the same tool I used to Dremel out the epitaph. It's an attachment tool for the Dremel called the multi-purpose cutting kit.

  • You make it. It's 5 parts pre-mixed drywall compound and 1 part latex paint. I recommend getting a drywall mixer attachment. It's very hard to mix by hand. That ratio is very flexible. If you'd like it a little thinner, add more paint to the ratio. My favorite is 4 to 1 (drywall compound to paint).

  • where could i get monster mud

  • what is it that you use to paint your gravestone?

  • @hulkarmy25 Called Drylok. It's a latex-based waterproofing paint for basements.

  • Very cool!

I try it for this year Halloween!

  • @Schnitzel9176 Great. Hope it's helpful.

  • @Scaryladyvideos Yes it is, but my english is not so good (Come fron Germany). Which tools use you around the edges of the gravestone to round?

  • @Schnitzel9176 It's a tool called the Stanley SureForm Shaver.

  • @Scaryladyvideos Thanks!

  • your very good.u should sell those.

  • @candigirl1970 Thanks so much :)

  • Awesome Video... I need to ask a dumb question, where do you buy insulation board at? Thanks!

  • @GhoulFiends Thanks and there's no dumb question :) You can get the pink version at Home Depot and the blue at Lowe's. They are both the same thing. Just different manufacturers.

  • Which tool are you using for the spider web at 4:46 ?

  • @HalloweenHellmouth That's the Dremel with the multi-purpose cutting bit. I just took the guide off.

  • what the song used in the video

  • Very nice tombstones! Look forward to making some like these. So much better than buying them already made. Thank you !!

  • @productnumber7 Terrific! Ping me if you have any questions :)

  • you are so awesome.

  • Very cool video!

  • @WillBill03 Thanks for the kudos!

  • @WillBill03 Why, thank you :)

  • Love it started planing my yard for next year. What the name of the song in the video

  • @mrstitch1000 Thank you :)

  • I've already started prop building for 2011, and will follow your instructions!! Now that it's colder, it's time to move prop building INDOORS! :) I gave a shout-out to you today on my vlog. :) youtube.com/halloweenhellmouth. Purely awesome!

  • @HalloweenHellmouth Like I said on your page...my first shout-out! That is soo cool! Thanks and ping me if you have any questions.

  • Hey, Terra! Nice job on this tombstone. I really like how you did the base--looks super solid.

Check out the video I posted in response to yours. It's a tutorial on tombstone lettering. Should save you some time.

  • @DevonTT Thank you. I love your idea of using a laser printer to transfer the epitaph!

  • Wow!!! I have to say these videos are amazing! you're so good at this! I have a question and i hope you can answer it. Does the drylok make the styrofoam more durable? Im in a band and we've been making tombstones on our own to have on stage but never used drylok or anything, just simply spraypainted styrofoam. And since we're a band, traveling with these tombstones makes them very easy to break so i wonder if the drylok makes them more durable? any other tips to make them more durable? Thanks!

  • @vickiboi Yes it does! It may still get dinged up here and there but just touch-it back up with Drylok if needed. The pro haunts use something that hard coats the foam. There's also something Roscoe sells called FoamCoat (never tried it). But, can't beat Drylok for ease. Be sure to get the latex version.

  • the issue is not the motor, the shutter is coming from the stick bouncing when its weight shifts to the other side of the eye screw. problem is if you make the eye screw smaller, it will not slide correctly unless you can make the eye swivel with out resistance.

  • I love how you say you're not an artist!!! HAHA This is AMAZING! Do you have kids? Do you set up for halloween every year? If so can you post photos of your exterior, interior etc. for ideas??? I'd be so appreciative! Really incredible work!

  • @lokhnes heheh. Thanks :) Nope, no kids but I have about 24 of them given to me by the neighbors which is why I do such an elaborate Halloween Haunt. ;) I do a set-up every year. I have a home forum where there's lot's of pictures. It's at HalloweenForum and I'm Terra there.

  • What is the cost of that pink foam??

  • @TheChristmasFan $20 for a 4' x 8' sheet.

  • This is so cool

  • @Dachshundish Appreciate it!

  • this would be perfect for castle walls thank you

  • @sonicfreak04 Oh, it would!

  • where do u get that pink foam stuff? :S

  • Pink foam is at Home Depot. Blue (same kind of stuff) is at Lowe's.

  • Simply awesome! I put on a Haunted House and not only am I tired of the "cookie cutter" store-bought tombstones, the cost is crazy. Especially since, here in Washington state, we deal with a lot of wind and rain that thin, cheap styrofoam doesn't along too well with. Keep up the good work and thanks for the ideas!

  • Oh yeah...that wind....GRRR! -Terra shaking fist at it-

  • you gave me an awesome idea for new tombstones in the future. Your a very crafty and talented artist. I'm getting tire of my tombstones falling over in the yard, since the ground are not perfectly straight. Thanks for the tips.

  • Thank you and glad this is a good solution. My stones are also on a hill. I use small pieces of wood under the base to help even them up.

  • You say monster mud is 5 gallons of drywall compound and 1 gallon of liquid latex. this is quite a bit of mixture, how long will this last? will it keep for a year or two? Do you use a drill to mix it? what is your procedure? thanks

  • Yes, it makes a lot! But it holds at least a year (mine did). I made a bit of a mistake. I thought a large bucket of drywall compund was 5 gallons but it's not. It's like 4. So, get another 5 gallon bucket and pour the entire contents of the drywall compund in it and then the gallon of paint (I use exterior latex). Be sure to use a drywal mixer drill attachment tool and mix it up. You need this tool or you will go insane!

  • @Scaryladyvideos I was thinking of making a 4ft by 6ft crypt in my front yard using this method. Do you have and suggestions or concerns for making something this large?

  • Oooh, sounds terrific. I would design it with wind in mind at all times. It's pretty lightweight and a crypt could trap wind easily. In regards to suggestions, perhaps give it a wood frame. Maybe furring strips so you have something substantial to tie it off.

  • You are awesome ! Great work

  • very very creative I LIKE A LOT.

  • Thank you :)

  • I love it!!!

  • Hey, thanks...

  • what is the monster mud??

  • Monster Mud is a name for the mixture of 5 gallons of pre-mixed drywall compound and 1 gallon of latex paint. It's great for adding stiffness to fabric and stone-like texture to everyday objects.

  • You are so talented!

  • Aww, thank you :)

  • Doesn't having such a big base sort of press the grass down on your lawn, and damage it?

  • I'm not sure how long you put your stones out. I put them out for 30 days and the grass does turn yellow and during the winter there are voids where the stones were. But by the first month of spring it returns and by the second month, you can't tell there were stones there. So, there is some damage so if that is concern, you may want to find a different area for them or make a smaller base. Great question.

  • @Scaryladyvideos Do you really need a base on your tombstone? I know that it really helps with the realistic appearance, but is it needed? Can you skip the base, and just just the actual tombstone with the PVC in-between and put that directly into the ground? Sorry about all the Questions!

  • That's okay about questions...I love 'em. You don't need the base. I like the look (monumental) that a base gives you but with the PVC the wind should not be a problem :)

  • @Scaryladyvideos you can reduce the grass from turning yellow by keeping the tombstone slight off the ground. could use a couple of pegs on the bottom to stop it from completely touching the ground. grass just needs to see the light not to turn yellow.

  • @tbeau2 That's a great suggestion. I'm going to do that!

  • Getting an early start are we?. . . Well, I`m not one to talk, I started November 1st.

  • All year ...all year :) :) :)

  • Where can you buy the pink foam. i cant find it anywhere.

  • I get the pink at Home Depot and the blue at Lowe's. I'm guessing you live in California. It has been spotted at this Home Depot: - Orange (K), CA #6965, 1855 N Tustin Ave, Orange, CA 92865

  • @Scaryladyvideos Thanks for the info.

  • You are amazing! You are an extremely talented artist. What helped me the most was seeing how you put the pvc in the middle in order to secure your tonbstomes down. I needed a very sturdy way of keeping mine down and you provided me with one. Thanks!

Anywho, I'm going to try my hand at tombstone making this year. I can only hope that with enough practice I can become as talented a you Ho long hveyou been doing this?

  • Wow, well thank you and good luck with making your stones. Feel free to ask for anymore tips if you run into a snag.

I made my first tombstone in 2008. I've been haunting my neighbors since 2005. :)

  • YOU ARE A GOD!!! I hope I end up as cool as you!!!

  • Aww, thanks <blushing>

  • i heard spray paint will eat away the styrofoam what else could i use for it and it has to be something that wont wash away when it rains any ideas

  • I use the spray paint (also straight acetone) to eat away the styrofoam on purpose. I only use it in spots to get an aged, worn effect. I do not use spray paint to paint the whole stone. I use latex Drylok for that. Then, check out my other video, "Painting Halloween Tombstones" for painting directions that holds up in the rain.

  • You put so much time into your tombstones, and they turn out great! I'm ready for Halloween!

  • Thanks so much :)

  • thanks for replying i seen on your channel it said you havent logged in for a month im like maybe il get a response but thank you so much i always make my halloween props in the summer because i have so much time on my hands

  • where can you find dry lock and what is another alternative to dry lock that you can find at home depot i am wanting to build these tomb stones

  • Oh great! It's name is Drylok and you will find it at Lowe's and Home Depot. It's basically basement waterproofing paint. I would think most brands should be okay but I haven't used them. I like this brand because it has sand in it so that leaves behind a great stone texture.

  • @Scaryladyvideos 5thanks for replying i seen on your channel it said you havent logged in for a month im like maybe il get a response but thank you so much i always make my halloween props in the summer because i have so much time on my hands

  • I love the acetone idea with a razor it just rips it up and is hard to work with so thanks for the ideas.

  • Thanks Cal. It wasn't a razor I used for the shaping though. It was the edge of the SureForm shaver. It's a rockin' tool. The acetone...well, that's Heavy Metal!

  • @Scaryladyvideos I meant I have used razors before and then do not work very well at all.

  • Oh, I misunderstood you. I see what you are saying now. Yeah, razors wold be tough. For tight corners I have pieces of a replacement rasp for the SureForm shaver. I hold it at the tips of my fingers and scratch at the stone.

  • Great Great job!! Good tips!

  • Cool, glad it was helpful. :)

  • nice tutorial. I wish I had that huge work space you have.

  • Thanks so much. The workshop was last year's project and I'm so glad I have it now. Before, I was building everything on a broken door on two saw horses. What an upgrade :)

  • You rock! :) Thank you for the great tutorials!

  • Thanks!!!

  • please post more vids

  • I will try. The next one I'm thinking of making will be about ChromaDepth 3D.

  • LOL you should be a teacher, love ur shop. Awsome vid

  • wow great job
