  • It's kind of interesting to draw parallels between Stalingrad and Guadalcanal. They both started in August of 1942, ended in early 1943, and were the turning points in their theaters. Even more, both were originally planned as sideshows to a larger operation. Stalingrad was to cover the offensive in the Caucasus. Guadalcanal was to sever the lines of communication to Australia so the Japanese could invade.
