im wandering why they use diesel.

gasoline engine's have a much higher rpm and would generate more electrick power.

thair compression rate is not as high as a diesel so you can start gasoline manually instead of hoping you'r battery has enough power left to start the engine.

@wormsmaster1994 diesel fuel has about 4 times the power per weight of fuel then gasoline. The higher compression ratio used in diesel engines also means they need to be built stronger and heavier. Not having a spark plug or carburetor there is less to go wrong. You CAN start it with a manual recoil start like with gas. Diesel is also safer for the environment and a lot cleaner. You can make your own diesel from vegetable oils yo can't make gasoline !

These generators give 1500 - 2000 hours of power because the engine is running constantly at a speed that is at the limit of the engine's ability (commonly at around 3600rpm), and this quickly tires the engine and generator. These engines should run at about 2000 - 2500 rpm if they are running constantly and they will run for a lot longer, possibly exceeding the life of the generator itself.

@DeepFriedFuzzball In theory your are correct however the way alternators produce electricity they need to turn at a specific RPM to produce 60Hz.  The engines are high torque at high RPM and connecting them directly to the generator head rather then what you are suggesting with a belt perhaps and pulley is just more to go wrong and hard to adjust the correct speed.

Portable air cooled diesel generators should last on average 1500 hours - 2000 hours. Water cooled generators last over 10,000 hours and are easily rebuilt.
