That was one of the funniest episodes of Gomer Pyle. I wish the whole episode was on here. Another funny part was when Harry Purcell got drunk again and started insisting that first Gomer and later on Sgt. Carter dance with him. The look of disdain on Sgt. Carter's face was priceless. LOL Keenan Wynn plays a terrific drunk.
@ridgerunner721601 Yeah, Carter was funny during that part. Purcell thought that Carter would be a nice guy like Gomer and just go out of his way to help him. But Carter was more like, "I'll throw you in a cab and send you on your way." Lol, Carter ended up taking him home anyways, unwillingly of course, only to hear from Purcell's wife "And Harry doesn't drink!!!" Lol.
@cvjucla3 LOL....I remember another part to that episode where Cpl. Boyle was trying to convince Sgt. Carter that Gomer was finally growing up and that the chocolate milk shakes weren't enough, meaning that Gomer had found himself a drinking buddy. And then at the end Purcell's wife started hitting the MP, the cop and Sgt. Carter with her purse. She just couldn't believe that Purcell was drinking on his own without any help from anybody!!! LOL
I've been singin' "Sweetheart, Sweetheart" since about '75 when I first saw that episode. One of the funniest I've ever seen. I was like, "who the hell were those actors?" K Wynn & P Kelton, that's who!
Keenan Wynn was great as usual. I'm a little surprised Kathleen Freeman didn't play his wife (she was so great at playing those scary women in comedies).
@Oppledeldoc Yeah, she was on quite a few episodes of Gomer Pyle. I remember one in particular where she played the part of Sgt. Carter's mom from Missouri or Kansas. And another one where she was married to Al Lewis (Grandpa on the Munsters). She had wrecked his car and Sgt. Carter got the blame for it. The ones where she was really scary was on Hogan's Heroes where she played as Burkhalter's sister and was always trying to get Klink to marry her....LOL.
@SIGNALSTAT That's right. Remember the episode where she was Sgt. Carter's mom? Sgt. Carter goes back to Kansas or Missouri and visits her to get away from Gomer and Gomer ends up on the plane. Every so often though, Sgt. Carter would get a glimpse of Gomer. He thought he was going insane....LOL. That was one of my favorite episodes.
wow this is my new fav show...thank god for the internet! lol man... i know a guy named brian dimaria who loaded my friend into a car when he was wasted... back then it was unthinkable i guess...well now a days noones like gomer anymore.. or it sure does seem like that.. Im gonna go hang with people 80 years or older!! wisdom is shunned by the masses....sad world. I loved my great grandparents.. they were both born on april2 but 10 yrs apart...i was born on april 3rd. funny huh?
@2boddah I used to love this show growing up. And I still love it. When I used to watch it in the 70s as a kid, it came on around midday during week days. It would be a treat when one was sick from school or during Summer time to watch it. "Get Smart" usually would come after it. All "Gomer Pyle" episodes are gems. This episode was no exception. All the characters were great though--of course Gomer. But I particularly thought Sgt. Carter was hilarious. Btw, my birthday is April 2, too.
man if i had a wife like ms.purcell i would pack all my shit and leave that dam loud mouth.

Mrs. Purcell was played by Pert Kelton, the original Alice Kramden, on The Honeymooners skits on the Jackie Gleason Show. She played a perfect shrew!
