  • so, what happens when your job not setup for gps,,,,,Blue Tops.... I've been runnin blades 25 plus years, seen more than one hand run off cuz he could'nt finish. I can 2D, 3D, and No D, nothin works like a bubble in your ass

  • Yes, pretty much always use bluetops. This company mainly just used GPS for big big dirtjobs.

  • that system is bad ass. i operate a 18 year old grader for the state of florida dot only computer i have is in my head would love to try one of those

  • This is the old System 5. It will correct 100 times per second, so u have to go slow. The new 3D MC systems will correct 1000 times per second and will keep up as fast as the machine will go.

  • The Kellogg Report website maintains a feature-for-feature comparison of Topcon, Leica, Trimble, AccuGrade and Prolec 3D machine control systems.

  • Is it me or one of the guys sounds exctly like the character "Bruce" from "Family Guy"?

  • @Hpangirl id say "Cleveland"!

  • TOPCON FTW

    MOVE THAT DIRT

  • This crap never works for me. I can do it by hand just as fast, plus it looks a lot better. This gps makes stupid humps in the grade.

  • thanks for the video, the GPS looks simple to operate, I know the blade isn't I've been learning for the last couple weeks, harder than looks.

  • I don't care for em much myself, I'm a dozer hand.

  • do you have to adjust the system as your edges wear down or can it adjust itself?

  • I'm not sure I was just learning about the system myself. I havent got to see one since this. Some one out there may know and reply to this comment.

  • @jerelsilva no you set the blade on a benchmark every morning to zero it out like a scale. they are nice toys but not all that practical very often and can sometimes get u in to trouble if something goes wrong. i.e. you lose signal or the satelittes arent alingned you need three satellite to make it work

  • yes and no top con systems run like a dream when they work but when they play up holy shit!! interference, repeater probs, satalites droping out, faulty lasers you name it ive seen it. jobs should always be set up with pegs as a back up

  • We did the airport in Mn and was a complete restoration of the existing runways. Surveyors pink topped the sub and with a 14H and GPS we had a tolerance of 0.00/0.02 over 2'200' by 60'w . 6" of granite base course and 4" mix. We won an award for the prodject and couldn't have done it without GPS outfitted on our earthmoving equipment. Made me a firm believer in the technology.

  • I am very fond of the system myself, although I haven't got to use one much. In your case that was a perfect job for the GPS, with the straight runs and all. And now overun with all that concrete to pour.

  • I don't care how fancy the electronics are, it takes a real hand to place the dirt where it needs to be before the GPS should even be used

  • I agree.

  • yeah, pretty much a kid from circle k can run a blade if it has electronics, we call them monkeys in the seat. try it the old school way and that separates the phonies from the real hands. 3rd gear??? yeah, maybe on a flat long stretch but the blade will duck walk and then they'll send the good blademan to go in and do it right. i know, cause i do it everyday.

  • no, thats how a wannabe operates now days. dont get your feelings hurt but you have a lot to learn. hunerd and something thousand??? why spend that when ONE can do it with a few stakes and a lot of experience. you sound foolish kid. might want to ditch this video....

  • i hear ya on this electronics stuff man i lay a lot of sewer, water, and storm drain and lasers are becoming so popular for pipelayers but an good pipelayer can stil do it faster with stringlines. no one hardly even knows what a flo-liner is anymore yet its used to double check the accuracy of lasers go figure!!!

  • underground is hard work! i could have been too hard on these guys but im not too keen on someone saying "not much to it" it takes a lot of work and skill to get good at anything you do. ill never lose respect for the machines or men who taught me and i learn something new everyday. glad to hear you run underground the old fashion way:) enjoy your sunday...

  • it sure is nice to hear someone else say i learn something new everyday. as long as we keep up that attitude we know whos gunna get better at whatever they do.

  • It's the way of the future, one day we will not have a choice.

  • yeah, and maybe he was just demonstrating it too and not trying to make critical grade. sometimes i can be a prick blademan. no harm intended:)

  • Yeah I don't think that blade hand I was filming knew what he was talking about, lol. That was the first time I had seen a GPS. I was the one filming not operating the blade. I just thought ya'll might like to see a GPS. I would never spend that much money on one.

  • Your'e damn right!

  • very great video!

  • Thanks again buddy.

  • I've never ran the Topcon, but have the Trimble. We have strict tolerances of one tenth on roads and slopes and half a tenth on pads, which you have to go slow to achieve. I've operated a new 12M w/ GPS and it was hard for it to keep up in 3rd gear, and the M-series are quick. The Trimble GPS has different views of the job plans, like the profile, which is the best view for grading slopes and roads.

Great video of how the Topcon operates, I would love to compare the Topcon to Trimble.

  • I wouldn't know myself but would like to try the new M model motor grader. Would like to get some time with that GPS too.

  • It's easy to use once it has been programed. It takes about a week to do. The only way I see it usefull is for very large applications like lots of roads or big lot areas. I have not got a chance to use it enough to really know.

  • Yeah I talked to a few operators out here during one of our government projects where we were cutting and paving a road for them, he said the GPS system was really only practical for big lot areas or long straight shoots.

I still get out there all the time and set hubs all by myself, no other guys can keep up with me. Just my trusty hub bucket and banjoo, we can keep a good operator busy all day if he doesn't knock out my damn hubs.

Hate looking back to see all my hubs ripped out.

  • That's a very clever piece of kit. Is it hard to use? It makes life a lot easier, but do you think it's removing the skill from the job of operating equipment. Still a great thing to have and use though!

  • cool

how long have u used that??

  • That was only my second time to see one.

  • i all ways wondered how those things worked now i know thanks for another great video keep up the good work and thanks for shareing.

  • Thanks glad u enjoyed it.

  • WOW!!! I must say, I'm impressed! I've got some neat features on my grader, but I don't have anything like that. Great video buddy, keep 'em coming!

  • Thanks, you need one to. You could program your whole county and the grades, and just cruise around all day, lol.
