Thanks for sharing this, . . . we're lucky to have a back porch video like this of the great John Prine, . . . he makes one proud to be an American, . . . sometimes something that is easier to be ashamed of when some of the corporate greed & related foreign policy misadventures are in focus.
nice....ol' maywood...i'm from daviess county, not far from paradise....i have a similar connection...growing up, i used to go up to forest park (same school district) as maywood...i was gonna go to school at proviso east but decided to go back down south and follow my roots!!!
Heard this for the first time when three musicians performed it in a quiet corner of the Common in Salem, MA yesterday, 2011-10-29, Sat in the cloudy afternoon. Lovely song.
I go to a camp called Green River Preserve, and this is practically our theme song. Singing this with hundreds of people is one of the most satisfying feelings ever.
@HatesBowen in NC? I went there as a camper for 5 years and heard the intro to paradise at a concert and i started singing along even though i had no clue how i knew the words. i couldnt for the life of me remember where i had heard it before and all of a sudden it hit me, the GRP. do yall still sing rocky raccoon too?
Too fast the places like the Green River are dissapearing, I supose we all had a special place when we were young people. Most were at the end of a dirt road or along a river somewhere.
@snarefoot I vote for the guy on the left being John Byrnes (sp?). I cheated and found another post of this clip. Just before this cut in this clip begins, John P. says that the other guy is "John Byrnes."
@snarefoot no its not jackson brown. his name is john. if you get the long version of this he says the kids name before they start. he says they better make it big one day or theyll both end up in jail
His story is so close to mine. My family is from east Kentucky in Harlan and Leslie couties, and every year we went down to visit the coal comapnies had raped the land a little more. Brings a tear to my eye.
@pandabearxtream Hi Pandabearxtreme. My educated guess is that the key is D. D-G-D-A, etc. Not only does it sound like D (admittedly horrible audio), but if you look at the guy on the left at 2.00, it looks like he goes from D to G, as you would do at that point if you're playing it in the key of D. One other observation, you can also play this song in 2 chords, D and A (eliminating G). You have to experiment; it depends on your voice and on how you sing it.
What a beautiful back porch rendition of one of the great American songs. John Prine is one of our real master's of American music. "And empty pop bottles was all we would kill" was a line!
This is the first song I heard john sing at the folk Festival . Said his name and "I wrote this song " and I knew I would hear him many more times !! He looks very young in this . You can hillbilly dance to this song !!!
This is the first song I heard john sing at the 1st Eureka Springs folk Festival 1973 or so ... Said his name and "I wrote this song " and I knew I would hear him many more times !! He looks very young in this . You can hillbilly dance to this song !!!
